Susannah Scaroni Takes on the Chicago Marathon (The New York Times)

A Paralympic gold medalist broke three vertebrae when she was hit by a car in a training session a year ago. On Sunday she will race in her third marathon ...

The 10-kilometer Peachtree Road Race in Atlanta on July 4 offered a $53,000 bonus for runners who broke the course record to share, in honor of the 53rd year of the race. In January, she was finally able to get back in her racing chair. But she was determined to get back on a starting line as fast as possible, even if she had not regained her fitness, because so many races had been canceled during the first 20 months of the pandemic. So she was a little leery when her mother insisted on taking her to a sports clinic at Shriners Hospital in Spokane an hour away when she was in fourth grade. She had to rebuild the core strength needed to sustain the upright position that pushing in the chair requires. Scaroni was paralyzed and became the only person in a wheelchair in her tiny town of Tekoa, Wash., population 800. Since 2017, she has balanced the life of a full-time professional racer with her graduate studies. Soon her mother was driving her two hours round-trip to practice every week, and when an opportunity to compete on a track team arrived, she joined that, too, and thrived. She was in the back seat. At Sunday’s Chicago Marathon, she will try to earn her third marathon medal in three weeks, capping off a third-place finish at the Berlin Marathon on Sept. Perhaps, but Scaroni has also been addicted to competition since her journey in wheelchair sports began when she was in elementary school. Bleakney rigged a handcycle to a workout bench, which allowed Scaroni to lie on her back and pedal with her hands and arms.

At BYU, he won NCAA cross-country titles in 2020 and 2021 and placed fifth in the Olympic Trials 10,000m, then turned pro and won the U.S. The American men’s debut marathon record of 2:07:56 (Leonard Korir) is in play. And Ethiopian Ruti Aga, a podium finisher in Berlin, New York City and Tokyo with a best time of 2:18:34, though she has one marathon finish since the pandemic (a seventh place). The most notable: defending champion Seifu Tura of Ethiopia and 2021 Boston Marathon winner Benson Kipruto of Kenya. “If everything goes perfect on the day, I think a sub-2:07, that’s a big stretch goal.” Since, Sisson won the Olympic Trials 10,000m on the track and was the top American in Tokyo in 10th place. At the time, it was the 12th-best U.S. She ran the virtual New York City Marathon later in 2020, but that was solo (and not in New York City). At Chicago, a flat course that produced a world record three years ago, Sisson can answer them and perhaps get close to D’Amato’s American record 2:19:12. In the last two years, Keira D’Amato, 37, and Sara Hall, 39, combined to run seven faster marathons. Sisson vaulted into the elite group of U.S. Conner Mantz makes one of the most anticipated U.S.
