Ravens vs. Bengals recap, final score: Report card, grades (Baltimore Beatdown)

The Baltimore Ravens break their home losing streak, taking down the Cincinnati Bengals, 19-17. Here are our game grades from Week 5 for the Ravens.

A 58-yarder and then to hit the gamewinning 43-yard kick? Overall, a takeaway and a sack were enough to uplift a topsy-turvy game. But, his containment in the early run game and the plays he made looked solid and give ‘em credit. In the end, Ja’Marr Chase finished with 50 yards and the Bengals leading receiver was tight end Hayden Hurst with 53 yards and a touchdown. Really, the run game has come on strong and Offensive Coordinator Greg Roman said, they were missing just a couple small things and they were close. Safeties had a decent night, but some penalties were painful and Hurst did some damage at times. Add in a pair of receptions from Isaiah Likely who the Ravens are looking to further incorporate in the passing game and you have an easy A for this unit. He looked solid on the edge there. Josh Bynes flew in and delivered a booming sack on Joe Burrow. His interception was also a poor overthrow to wide receiver Demarcus Robinson, which jump-started the Bengals offense and brought them back to life. That’s a great 5.6 yards per carry, which is a stark difference from where they were to begin the year. A solid game by the backs, as they churned out 13 carries for 73 yards.

Because of two sacks and another missed play on the offensive line, the Bengals netted just 22 yards on their first four drives. Both times, the Bengals succeeded because of some of Mixon’s best runs of the year and patient decisions from Burrow as the Bengals slowly marched down the field. One week with the Bengals this season, it was a halfback toss that went for a loss on 4th and 1. The unit was only responsible for allowing 14 of the 17 points against one of the most explosive offenses in the NFL. The Bengals only needed two yards, and they ran a trick play for a receiver with five career catches in four NFL seasons. The Bengals made up some of the ground they had lost with a 12-yard gain on third down. Burrow, Chase and Mixon each showed why they’re among the best players in the NFL at their position with star-level plays on a go-ahead drive that lasted nearly nine minutes. The Bengals have a Pro Bowl running back and a quarterback who was an MVP candidate last season. “That’s part of the game plan, you’re preparing for fronts, seeing what other teams have done and why they have had success,” Taylor said. On second down, Taylor called the “Philly special,” a trick play where wide receiver Tyler Boyd tried to throw the ball to quarterback Joe Burrow for a touchdown and took a 12-yard sack. Taylor could have called four conventional plays instead of reaching into the grab bag and calling two trick plays the Bengals almost never have a reason to use. It was the turning point in the most important game so far in the Bengals season.

Baltimore Ravens edge Cincinnati Bengals on 'Sunday Night ... (USA TODAY)

Lamar Jackson led a last-minute drive to set up Justin Tucker's game-winning field goal as the Baltimore Ravens defeated the Cincinnati Bengals.

Tucker opened the scoring with a 37-yard field goal on the Ravens' opening drive. That brought them to a second-and-goal situation from the Ravens' 2-yard line. "There were a lot of things happening on that drive." He surpassed the 4,000-yard career rushing mark and became the fastest quarterback (sixth overall) quarterback to reach that mark. Taylor didn't complicate matters much in the game's biggest moment. The Breakdown: Five Thoughts After Ravens' Win Over Bengals (BaltimoreRavens.com)

Still, there was good reason to believe this might be a high-scoring affair considering the firepower the Bengals have on offense and the fact that Baltimore's defense entered the game ranked last in the league. The Ravens' free-agent addition is looking like a good move and more pass-rush reinforcements are on the way. 6) Just as bad as the Ravens needed this win, Patrick Queen needed that interception. Peters brought the flashy gold cleats and his energy was off the chain, helping the defense get off on the right foot. Jackson said he'll be "mad at the film" after a game like this, in which he finished 19-of-32 for 174 yards with one touchdown, one interception and 58 yards rushing. His second quarter interception short-circuited the Ravens' early momentum when they built a 10-0 lead and were driving for more. The scales tipped that way again when, with the Ravens leading by three points, Harbaugh decided to send Tucker out for the chip-shot 25-yard field goal instead of go for it on fourth-and-1 from the Cincinnati 3-yard line. The defense got a huge stop on the goal line on the Bengals' next-to-last drive. It's a great win over a very strong team that was in last year's Super Bowl and took it to the injury-depleted Ravens twice last year. "But in the end, the scale tipped towards Justin," Harbaugh said. This team is very talented, but it needed that kind of win after the early-season heartbreaks. Nobody is winning the division in October and nobody lost it either.

Everything Zac Taylor Said After the Bengals-Ravens Game (Bengals.com)

(on how the game played out) "It's a tough game. That's the way these AFC North games are going to be, especially on the road in these types of atmospheres.

He's just done a masterful job of handling that over the course of the game. I thought the offense did a good job of that." Again, we knew this was a tough team and a tough environment and a tough test to come in here and get a win. We took a sack on a specialty play, and then it didn't quite go how we wanted to on the shovel [pass] on the fourth-down play. Even if he wasn't going to be in the core part of things, and that situation just didn't ride." (on why the defense couldn't start fast tonight) "We just couldn't get that first, first down. (on if WR Tee Higgins reaggravated his ankle) "He tried to fight through that thing really the whole game. And it did on the one play once we got Joe [Burrow] downhill, and then we snuck it in on the next play." (on the thinking of the four plays at the goal line) "It's a really tough structure of the front. (on if you learned something for the next time near the goal line) "That's part of the gameplan. We just have to keep taking our shots, and these things have a way of balancing out, and we are going to get some of these wins in these situations." The offense gave them the three points to start the second half with the turnover, and then they did a good job holding them, and they kicked the long field goal.

Head Coach Zac Taylor talks about his decision making. Joe Burrow discusses how the Ravens defense kept a lid on their passing game.

But at the end of the day, we didn't get the win, and that's the most important thing." So, putting myself in the best position for the team to win, go out there and make plays for one another and just go out there and let it loose." (on why the offense didn't have as much success compared to their last two games against the Ravens) "Sometimes, they come out in different looks. (on his interception) "It was in the call. (on how he thinks the defense contained QB Lamar Jackson) "You know, any time you play a guy that's won the MVP, very elusive and also a prolific passer, that comes with a lot of threats. (on the play of TE Hayden Hurst) "He just continues to make plays for us. We took a sack on a specialty play, and then it didn't quite go how we wanted to on the shovel [pass] on the fourth-down play. (on the Ravens' run defense) "They did a really good job. (on why the offense couldn't start fast tonight) "We just couldn't get that first, first down. (on the thinking of the four plays at the goal line) "It's a really tough structure of the front. At that point in the game, the Bengals looked pretty lifeless on offense so when Bell picked off Lamar Jackson, it gave that side of the ball some life. You just know that had to irk the Ravens fans who watched Hurst play for them in 2018 and 2019. The play-calling was why the Bengals lost this game and there wasn't another reason. The guy did a terrible job on the biggest stage of the season and at some point, you'd think something has to give, right? This was a tough loss and most fans would say the loss falls squarely on the shoulders of Zac Taylor and his horrid playcalling. Yes, the defense struggled to contain Mark Andrews and Joe Burrow didn't play all that well but a lot of teams have trouble containing Andrews and Burrow did okay.

Ravens vs. Bengals: The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly (Baltimore Beatdown)

The Baltimore Ravens needed a last-second field goal to dispatch the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 5, but it was a crucial victory nonetheless.

When the defense went back on the field, the Bengals immediately drove 83 yards in seven plays and Hurst found the end zone. The Ravens’ defense held up and forced a turnover on downs, but they shouldn’t have been in that position in the first place. Then, on fourth-and-short, Jackson overthrew a wide-open Tylan Wallace on the sideline — who would have walked in untouched for a score. The Ravens were leading 10-0 at the time and had forced four straight punts and three consecutive three-and-outs. He overthrew Devin Duvernay on a deep pass attempt up the middle of the field, which would have been caught in the end zone for a touchdown. He was a perfect 4-of-4 on field goal tries in this game, highlighted by a 58-yard make in the third quarter and the 43-yard kick to seal the win as time expired. That penalty, also on third down, gave the Bengals a first down at the two yard line. If Tucker accounts for over 50% of the team’s scoring output in every game, the Ravens probably won’t win a ton of them. Drake had a 13-yard rush and a key first down run in the fourth quarter. Then, Jackson’s first down run up the middle for three yards on third down extended the drive. The Ravens also manufactured a couple rushes for Devin Duvernay, who had 24 yards on the ground. Little to no damage was inflicted after the catch, an area were the likes of Ja’Marr Chase and Tyler Boyd are dangerous.
