Brigham Young Cougars quarterback Jaren Hall (3) comes off the field after the Cougars' loss to the Notre Dame Fighting Irish at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas ...
Notre Dame quarterback Drew Pyne was 13 of 17 for 163 yards and two TDs in the first half, with a passer rating of 195.8. Hall was 3 of 8 for 11 yards and the TD, for a passer rating of 65.3. “It is Game 6, and we are struggling to put 11 guys out there in the game. “Disheartening that we weren’t able to get that, and credit to Notre Dame for making the play. Set up at the Irish 26, BYU survived a Hinckley Ropati fumble on his first-ever carry as a Cougar, and marched in for a touchdown. To be fair, Katoa had made a play earlier in the game, picking up a 3rd and 18 situation with a 20-yard scamper, so it wasn’t like he wasn’t capable. That was the only penalty committed by either team in the first half, but it loomed large. The idea that it was going to be a long afternoon/night manifested itself on the first play, as TaRiq Bracy got an easy interception. “Just thankful to all the fans who made the trip and brought a lot of energy,” Sitake said. “Proud of the way the guys played, but we have to get better and get ready for the next one,” BYU coach Kalani Sitake said. But Hall found his passing touch, delivering a 53-yard touchdown pass to Epps, and the slumbering offense finally got going. That kind of play and coaching doesn’t beat the mighty Notre Dame Fighting Irish, however.

The whole thing led to another slow start and a deficit out of which the Cougars couldn’t climb. There were other coaching miscues too that led to points and and trouble getting off the field on defense. “We have to evaluate all the decisions we are making. When Brooks ran into the end zone for a 28-yard touchdown to cut the lead to 25-20, the Cougars had real life. And the biggest what if of them all, what if BYU never put itself in that position in the first place? On the first play of the game, Hall severely underthrew a ball that was intercepted. What if BYU had left the ball in quarterback Jaren Hall’s hands and let him try to get a yard? Those decisions started even before the game when Hall was called upon to play with a shoulder that wasn’t “100%” by Sitake’s estimation. What if power runner Chris Brooks, who had 90 yards and a touchdown Saturday night, were in the backfield instead of Katoa? They would run the ball with second-string back Lopini Katoa to the right, as they had done time and time before. “We even took a timeout so we had time to think about it. We have run that play before this year and it’s worked.”

On its last possession, BYU could not convert a fourth-and-1, turning the ball over to the Irish. The highlight play was one of two touchdown plays in the second half that sliced Notre Dame’s lead to five points. On defense, BYU could not muster enough stops on the most important down of every possession. After starting 0-for-4 on such situations, the Cougars got more than enough for a first down on Hall’s 53-yard touchdown pass to Kody Epps. This was BYU’s golden dome chance, the kind of game the program needs to win. BYU’s performance right from the start was downright embarrassing. One year after beating hapless Arizona to open last season, the Cougars had no luck against the Irish. For BYU football, especially without the fallback of conference games, the measuring stick are the big names that occasionally dot the schedule. There’s a lot of Catholics out there. Let’s face it, when Notre Dame comes to town, the hype is bigger than if it was Santa Claus. Wherever the football team goes, Notre Dame fans come flocking. New research from BYU shows that parent interventions are instrumental in helping autistic children develop social and communication skills. (Nate Edwards, BYU) ...
The research provides hope for parents who feel discouraged they don't have time, abilities or understanding to provide for their child, Smith said. However, sometimes parents lack the knowledge and training professionals have, so they're uncertain and at times unable to provide their children with the best outcomes that they would wish. Intervening early for children with disabilities sets them up for an improved lifelong trajectory, Smith said. Children whose needs are met are less likely to act out with problematic behaviors, Smith said. "Families are important for many reasons and it turns out research emphatically supports that. These interventions require that parents go through professional training so they are informed and able to assist their own children with developmental disabilities. Early on in life, children with disabilities have a harder time expressing their needs and can act out in perceived problematic behaviors. "Society needs children with disabilities — particularly children with autism. Social skills, such as making eye contact, responding to questions and interacting with others, are developed through coaching and modeling. The parent-child connection, researchers found, also helps kids feel supported, increase their communication and social interaction. Obtaining this intensive intervention, however, can be difficult for many families due to cost, time, distance and access to services. Clinical recommendations often call for intensive services to help the child develop socially and mentally.
