International baseball fans who were planning to stream the postseason are accusing MLB of a deceptive last-minute money grab.
A league spokesperson said MLB.tv refunds were available to affected fans who reach out [wrote](https://twitter.com/batflips_nerds/status/1578068741119787025?s=20&t=4_j93R06CfPwfN7zaOfe2g) the account @batflips_nerds, which has nearly 10,000 followers and represents a popular British baseball podcast. On Thursday, some fans abroad, including many in the United Kingdom, discovered that if they wanted to watch MLB’s postseason, their subscription to MLB.tv’s package would no longer cut it.
Here are the biggest takeaways from Friday's four-game playoff slate.
He allowed only one run in seven innings of work, and gave the Padres' bullpen a relatively easy night, at least by postseason standards. "This is one of the lowest of lows." Scherzer's final line saw him surrender seven runs on seven hits (four of them home runs) across 4 2/3 innings. The Mariners played and won their first playoff game in 21 years thanks to a combination of timely hitting out front and a strong start from trade deadline addition Luis Castillo. A pinch-hit, two-run home run from Juan Yepez gave the Cardinals a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the seventh and looked like it would be the entirety of the scoring. The starting pitchers (José Quintana of the Cardinals and Zack Wheeler of the Phillies) combined for 11 2/3 innings of scoreless work on Friday in St. The Cardinals were 74-3 when leading after eight innings in the regular season. That was in the top of the sixth. The lone run he allowed was a solo home run to Jose Siri and that briefly gave the Rays the 1-0 lead. They were the stars of Game 1. MLB has a 12-team postseason format this year, the largest field in the sport's history (excluding the 2020 pandemic season). The postseason began Friday with the brand new Wild Card Series.
Cleveland leads the series 1-0. Two hours and 17 minutes. That's all it took to get through the first game of the 2022 MLB playoffs. This was the shortest AL ...
That's what happened to the Mets ace when he left four pitches out over the middle of the plate to [Josh Bell](https://www.espn.com/mlb/player/_/id/32517/josh-bell), [Trent Grisham](https://www.espn.com/mlb/player/_/id/34995/trent-grisham), [Jurickson Profar](https://www.espn.com/mlb/player/_/id/31117/jurickson-profar) and [Manny Machado](https://www.espn.com/mlb/player/_/id/31097/manny-machado), who hit home runs in the first, second and fifth innings, respectively. Next up: [Robbie Ray](https://www.espn.com/mlb/player/_/id/32175/robbie-ray) returns to Toronto, where he won the Cy Young last season, to try to finish the series for Seattle. And now the Cardinals have to win on Saturday or the careers of [Albert Pujols](https://www.espn.com/mlb/player/_/id/4574/albert-pujols) and [Yadier Molina](https://www.espn.com/mlb/player/_/id/5986/yadier-molina) will be over. In Game 1, he struck out three times and flew out to left to end the game. Yet it’s fair to wonder after their 2-1 loss to the Guardians in Game 1 if their bats are finally too feeble to prop up a great pitching staff. Helsley went to get X-rays and perhaps other imaging immediately after Game 1. Their success over the past three seasons has been extremely pitcher-centric, which is a great way to live. With the Game 1 winner statistically favored to prevail at least 75% of the time in a best-of-three series, Friday’s losers need answers – and quickly. It’s also the dire situation closer Ryan Helsley’s injury-related pratfall leaves them for Game 2 (8:37, ESPN2). The price of poker has only gone up since he signed an extension with the Mets, and it’s not unreasonable for deGrom to expect a Scherzer-esque per annum. They did have Randy Arozarena, who hit an absurd 10 home runs between the ALDS and World Series. Not once did he waver from his intention to opt out of his contract, not even after a scapula injury delayed his 2022 debut to Aug. Saturday night, Jacob deGrom will take the ball against the San Diego Padres in a must-win situation. And after Josh Bell, Trent Grisham, Jurickson Profar and Manny Machado all homered, loudly and longly, Scherzer was on the losing side for a third consecutive playoff start. He made just 11 starts this season due to a shoulder issue.

If the first day of the playoffs was an indication, the teams in this year's field will only go as far as their top starting pitchers take them.
Thanks to them, the best Mets season in decades is on the brink. The Padres showed how even a game plan as airtight as “start two of the three best pitchers of a generation” can fail, taking Scherzer to task to seize control of the series. The Mets will have to hope he gets a chance for redemption at some point this October. With two on and one out, Jurickson Profar doubled the advantage: But within minutes of stepping the mound, the Mariners had socked Manoah in the face and set the tone for the game. Before their star-studded lineup could even take an at-bat, Toronto was down 3-0 in the first game of a best-of-three series. The playoffs got started off with what was less of a bang and more of a breeze. Jordan Hicks and Giovanny Gallegos combined for two innings, and handed a 2-0 lead off to Ryan Helsley with one out in the eighth. A fielder’s choice, single, and sac fly later, and the Phillies suddenly had a 6-2 lead. The Guardians don’t quite have the lineup depth or rotation depth of a great team. The game Kurkjian was commentating on featured a starter working on a dazzling shutout outing. The only blemish on his outing was a solo shot from number-nine hitter Jose Siri.

Anyway, it was a pitcher’s duel, with Shanes McLanahan and Bieber (pitchers named Shane is the new market inefficiency) matching each other nearly pitch-for-pitch. On the other side, Luis Castillo was everything the Mariners traded for him to be (and then And then apparently the Mariners have a guy named Andres Muñoz who throws 103 mph out of the bullpen, and he wrapped the game up. Unlike the two NL games, I didn’t have a strong rooting interest in this one, though I’m happy to see the Mariners do well, given the long playoff drought. The short version is that the Cardinals carried a 2-0 lead into the 9th inning, and gave up 6 runs to blow it. Darvish wouldn’t have made the difference for the Cubs in 2021 and 2022, so there wasn’t anything lost there, but obviously now we’re talking about wanting the Cubs to go out and add a front-end starter.

The performance was reminiscent of Tom Glavine in the final game of the 2007 regular season against the Marlins: a future Hall of Famer booed off his home field. Scherzer, for his part, insisted upon his health, just as he did on the eve of his start. The Mets had a horrid time during a 7-1 loss in Game 1 and appear to still be reeling after losing the NL East in the final days of the season but Marte was one of the few bright spots on Friday. The Jays get the better hitting environment and may come out slightly ahead, but combining the top of the Phillies lineup looks to be a very comfortable play. Nola is the second-highest pitcher on the slate due to the safety he presents. The two arguments for them are: 1) deGrom isn't fully healthy, and/or: 2) they'll be extremely under-rostered. Relative to others on the slate, Ray has a home run (1.5 HR/9) and walk (8 BB%) problem. Another year, another time the Astros top the American League and potentially play the Yankees in the playoffs.
The fate is in their hands. Needless to say, their road to the top of the American League was one that they made look fairly easy outside of some early inconsistency. However, what makes the Astros the Astros isn’t necessarily all their hitting. Over the rest of the year, their lowest winning percentage in any given month was .607.
