Castillo, Mariners silence Blue Jays to win Game 1 of AL Wild Card ... (Sportsnet.ca)

Luis Castillo pitched 7.1 innings of shutout baseball and the Mariners jumped on Alek Manoah early to win Game 1 of this American League Wild Card series ...

The Blue Jays did not make the playoffs last year and were swept by the Tampa Bay Rays in a wild-card series in 2020. Springer stayed in the game but was left stranded after Bo Bichette flew out and Vladimir Guerrero Jr., grounded out. Manoah hit Rodriguez with another pitch in the fifth inning and it proved costly again. But Seattle's main strength is on the mound with a solid rotation and a bullpen that led the AL in several pitching categories. Edwin Encarnacion, who hit a walk off homer in the play-in game that year, threw the ceremonial first pitch. With a single loss, the Blue Jays now find themselves in must-win territory.

Mariners shut out Blue Jays in Game 1 of wild card behind Luis ... (The Seattle Times)

This is why the Mariners made acquiring Luis Castillo their priority at the Major League Baseball trade deadline – this setting, this moment, ...

When Manoah left a 3-2 sinker in the middle of the plate at his belt, Raleigh crushed a homer similar to his week-ago walkoff. With an 0-1 count, Castillo fired a 98-mph sinker that started on the outer half of the plate and darted in on the hands of a swinging Guerrero. After retiring Whit Merrifield to start the eighth, Castillo let a 98-mph fastball ride up and in on George Springer. Where would this team be without the somewhat unexpected performances of Suarez and Raleigh? A week ago he hit the biggest homer in recent Mariners history, a walkoff shot that clinched the team’s first playoff spot in 21 years. “I know he likes that fastball, and I was ready to hit.” That moment, which will be immortalized on highlight reels telling the Mariners history was the biggest of his career … Munoz returned for the ninth inning and completed the victory even after allowing a two-out hit. stepped to the plate with runners on first and second with two outs. Bichette had committed to swinging and hit a softball ground ball to second. Not since Felix Hernandez’s prime have the Mariners had a starting pitcher with the ability to overwhelm hitters like Castillo. “The fans, the energy in that moment give me that little extra boost when I’m out there,” Castillo said through interpreter Freddy Llanos.

[Robbie Ray](/mlb/players/1947846/robbie-ray/), a former Blue Jay and the reigning AL Cy Young Award winner, is expected to get the nod for the Mariners. The Mariners' most recent playoff win prior to Friday occurred on October 20, 2001. By the time the top of the first inning concluded, the Mariners had a 75 percent win expectancy. He'd advance to second base on a groundout before scoring on a Eugenio Suárez double.

Toronto was shut out for the sixth time in its postseason history, and the second time at home. Chapman flied out to Rodríguez in center to end the inning. In his final five regular-season starts this season, Ray had a 5.27 ERA and allowed eight home runs in 27 1/3 innings. Former Blue Jays slugger Edwin Encarnación threw out the first pitch. Springer went down in pain and was checked by the trainer but remained in the game. Raleigh followed with a 362-foot drive into the right field bullpen on a 3-2 fastball. It was the second time the Mariners have held an opponent off the scoreboard in the playoffs. Castillo’s only other postseason start came with Cincinnati in 2020, when he lost to Atlanta in the wild-card round. Three of the four hits off him were for extra bases. Muñoz quickly closed out the Blue Jays. Throwing two different kinds of fastballs at 100 mph and his changeup at 92 mph, Castillo scattered six singles in 7 /13 innings. “It was very good going out there and having that lead,” Castillo said through a translator.

Seattle Mariners' Playoff Return Could Jump-Start An Economic ... (Forbes)

When the Seattle Mariners step to the plate against the Toronto Blue Jays on Friday night, it will officially mark the end of the longest active postseason ...

In the clubhouse, players and coaches have been staying on message in their interactions with media, saying they are not content with a playoff berth and instead want to make a deep run. Although it’s unfair to compare, the third spot would have earned the Mariners a trip to the playoffs on four separate occasions over the course of the drought. Regardless, this year’s team finished three games clear of Tampa Bay to claim the AL’s second wild-card spot and a best-of-three series on the road against the Blue Jays. “It is to field a competitive team year after year, to put itself in a position to win a World Series, and hope at some point that happens.” He added: “We absolutely have to make money. Playing in a newly constructed stadium, it led the league in attendance in 2001, and again in 2002. That year, Seattle pulled in $166 million in revenue, the third-most in the league, according to Forbes data, and it ranked as the sixth-most-valuable franchise at $373 million. “Instead of being excited about, wow, this team is having some success, it’s been a long time, the 14-game winning streak, we’re concerned about how to get more revenue, figure out ways to get people to spend more money on premium seating,” Wells says. Geckil agrees that these factors could bring MLB closer to his findings for the NFL, where the financial impact of winning was “statistically insignificant.” The introduction of jersey patch and helmet decal advertisements will further bring in money independent of wins and losses. T-Mobile Park is selling tickets for watch parties in the team’s home stadium this weekend, and tickets to potential future home games in the division series sold out within minutes, according to the team.

A casual fan's guide to the Mariners' playoff run (Crosscut)

Seattle's hometown team made the postseason for the first time in 21 years. If you're a baseball rookie, here's all you need to know.

If the Mariners were to win that series – and I hope you are knocking on wood here – they would advance to the American League Championship season where they would compete against the winner of the other divisional series in a best-of-seven contest. Finally, I would suggest that you follow [Joe Veyera](https://twitter.com/JoeVeyera), a local journalist who for years has tracked the team and fan journey by photoshopping a banner in the stadium’s rafters with the latest highlight or lowlight. Also, of course, you should follow the reporters at The Seattle Times, who did predict that the team would be this good - [Ryan Divish](https://twitter.com/RyanDivish?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Eauthor) is on the beat. [the team’s Instagram](https://www.instagram.com/mariners/?hl=en), where videos of announcers calling the big plays [ serve as a replayable dose of pure joy](https://www.instagram.com/reel/CjHw53grF2b/?hl=en). And the best of the wild-card teams plays the second-best wild-card team. Also, the CBA is good through 2026, so this is the way it is for a while. The wild-card team with the worst record plays the worst of the three division winners. For one thing, this is the first time that there are three wild-card teams in each league. After last year’s near-miss, outfielder Mitch Haniger [wrote in the Player’s Tribune](https://www.theplayerstribune.com/posts/mitch-haniger-seattle-mariners-mlb-baseball) that “This group is going to the playoffs. And in both games the other team won their game before the Mariners finished their game. To advance, the Mariners needed to win that final game and needed another team to lose. In both 2014 and last year, the Mariners entered the last game of the season still vying for a wild card.

11 facts about Mariners' long-awaited return to postseason (MLB.com)

Castillo also combined with Muñoz to throw 71 fastballs at an average of 98.8 mph, the highest produced by a team in a postseason game in the pitch-tracking era, as first pointed out by researcher Jeremy Frank. In the pitch-tracking era (since 2008), only two other starting pitchers had recorded multiple K’s on pitches 97-plus mph in a single inning in the seventh or later during the postseason. It was the second time in Castillo’s career that he had struck out the side -- meaning he recorded three K’s without allowing a baserunner -- in the seventh inning or later. He became the first Mariners pitcher to throw at least seven scoreless innings in a playoff game. That made the AL Rookie of the Year Award frontrunner only the third player in postseason history to be hit by multiple pitches and score multiple runs in a game. and Carlos Guillen as the only Mariners to hit a postseason homer at age 25 or younger. The victory was all the more thrilling for the Mariners because Rodríguez was in the middle of it. Not only did Manoah end the regular season with a 15-inning scoreless streak, but he had a 2.03 ERA in the first inning in 2022. It was the first multi-HBP game in Mariners postseason history, but at least Rodríguez made Toronto pay by turning both into runs. He was hit by a pitch twice by Blue Jays starter Alek Manoah, marking the second game in his career with multiple hit-by-pitches (also June 8 at Houston). That made him the first Mariner with a postseason hit since Mark McLemore singled off Hall of Fame closer Mariano Rivera in the ninth inning of 2001 ALCS Game 5. The franchise’s last postseason victory had come in Game 3 of that series, on Oct.

In opening win, Mariners show they're unfazed by postseason's big ... (The Seattle Times)

Friday's game was a textbook display of what manager Scott Servais called “Seattle Mariners baseball” that he said delivered a message: “We belong here.”

And the Mariners have been waiting ever since to play a postseason game in front of their home fans. “To do that right out the gate it set the tone for us, and it set the tone for them. On that day the Mariners lost 3-2 to the Yankees to fall behind 2-0 in the American League Championship Series. Servais said the Mariners executed “perfectly” in the game, and it’s hard to argue. The early lead took the air out of what had been a frenetic crowd and knocked away whatever nerves the Mariners might have been harboring. It’s not hyperbole to state that for a franchise that once had Randy Johnson, albeit in limited opportunities, it was the greatest outing in its sparse postseason history.

Luis Castillo pitched a scoreless gem into the eighth inning and Cal Raleigh homered off Toronto ace Alek Manoah as the Seattle Mariners beat the Blue Jays ...

Manoah hit Rodríguez with a pitch for the second time in the game, and it would, again, come back to bite him. Rodríguez got his first postseason hit with a single in the seventh. Then in the fifth inning, Whit Merrifield's soft liner to left dropped in for a single and Springer reached on another infielder grounder with two outs. A two-out single from George Springer and an infield single from Bo Bichette put a pair of runners on in the third, but Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Manoah hit leadoff hitter Julio Rodríguez on the left hand with the fourth pitch of the game to give Seattle a quick base runner. Castillo allowed six hits with five strikeouts on 108 pitches for Seattle in arguably the most dominant postseason start in franchise history.
