What Kanye West and Tucker Carlson reveal about the struggle for ... (The Washington Post)

The interview was illuminating, but perhaps not in the way Carlson or West intended.

Here’s a member of the inner circle of the elite — a Black man — who’s willing to elevate the idea that White lives are disadvantaged in a way equivalent to Black lives. “White lives matter” is a rejection of “Black lives matter,” a more forceful rejection, even, than “all lives matter.” It’s not just an effort to dilute the “Black lives matter” phrase but to suggest that saying “Black lives matter” suggests that White ones don’t. The problem, he said, was that those elite were too scared to be honest. Carlson and Trump, sharing that sense, highlight anecdotes that reinforce that sense and push back against the group that’s most forcefully calling for the playing field to be leveled. There are the “elites” themselves — a nebulously defined group that expands and contracts conveniently — who are an easy foil and an increasingly left-leaning one (particularly once it expands and contracts). The point of the “Black lives matter” movement, though, was to call attention to ways in which Black people were systematically disadvantaged, particularly in the criminal justice system. Then there are systems that hold power in the United States, systems that are facially controlled by the elite but are themselves deeply conservative (in the nonpolitical sense). The line between person and politics is certainly not always bright, but if Ye were surrounded by wealthy, famous people who he felt had wronged him and who were also staunchly conservative — there are certainly many such people — it would be interesting to see whether his politics were affected. An old-fashioned story Ye then extrapolates out to suggest that Jared Kushner’s effort to craft a peace deal in the Middle East was about enriching himself — and that Kushner wasn’t primarily “serving my boy Trump.” Ye, Carlson said, had become “a kind of Christian evangelist” whose embrace of the “obviously true” phrase had infuriated the left, to Carlson’s glee. For example, Ye went on an extended riff about the ownership stakes of Skims, Kardashian’s shapewear line, and how he learned that Jared Kushner’s brother Josh had an unexpectedly large stake in the product. We’ll get back to Carlson’s interest in the news of the week, but we should start by explaining the ways in which Ye’s commentary was unintentionally revealing.

Kanye West has explained his thinking behind his decision to dress himself and several Black models in "White Lives Matter" shirts earlier this week.

“They basically said I would be killed for wearing the hat.” He said he was told by multiple people “that if I said I liked Trump that my career would be over, my life would be over.” “The answer to why I wrote ‘White Lives Matter’ on a shirt is because they do,” West said during the interview that aired Thursday.

Kanye West Was Tucker Carlson's Ultimate Grievance Interview (Slate Magazine)

Though you might not think so at first, the musical artist Kanye West and the Fox News host Tucker Carlson actually have a lot in common.

The premise of West’s Tucker Carlson Tonight interview, as stated by Carlson at the beginning of the program, was that no one had bothered to reach out to West to ask him why he’d worn the T-shirt, or what he’d meant by it. For another thing, it’s extremely irritating when right-wing grievance merchants will on one hand attempt to ban every single library book that even implies that homosexuals exist, while whining on the other about how the media isn’t looking deeply enough into the true meaning and message of a shirt that says “White Lives Matter.” The T-shirt itself is the message, and everyone—Tucker Carlson included—knows what it means. (The culture wars themselves are not new, of course.) Carlson is currently right-wing media’s most able and prominent exponent of this dumb theory, both in his contemptuous opening monologues on Tucker Carlson Tonight—in which he often advances ideas in broad alignment with the message on West’s T-shirt—and in his frequent Grievance Interviews with political pariahs and elite media apostates such as Glenn Greenwald and Alex Berenson, who tout their liberal origins as a means of supporting Carlson’s underlying point that liberals are terrible now. The irony, again, is that these cases are inevitably made on platforms—Fox News, prominent books from major publishers, the letters section of Harper’s—that would not be available to people who were actually canceled. “I’m starting to see why they want to make you be quiet,” Carlson said after West spoke out against abortion and claimed that “I perform for an audience of one and that is God.” The inevitable message of these interviews is that the suppressive left has conspired to silence the interviewees because they dared to express social or political sentiments that deviate from woke orthodoxy. If Project Runway has taught me anything, other than the meaning of the word “serging,” it is that designers can control what they put into their collection, but they cannot control the response their collection receives. In it, West rambled about his parents, announced that he chose to wear a “White Lives Matter” shirt “because they do [matter],” and spoke about how political forces had attempted to manipulate him back when he was married to Kim Kardashian. It’s America, man, and he can say and think whatever he wants, even if what he wants to say and think is that he is being prevented somehow from saying or thinking whatever he wants. Call it principle, call it oppositional defiance, call it mental illness (as some have), or just call it being a huge jerk: It doesn’t really matter why West is like this. [according to the New York Times](https://www.nytimes.com/2022/10/04/style/yeezy-kanye-west-paris-fashion-week.html), he introduced with a “rambling speech about critics who complained about his shows being late; … On Monday, both West and conservative commentator Candace Owens wore shirts reading “White Lives Matter” to West’s fashion show in Paris.

The designs have been widely denounced by those within and outside of the fashion industry. “And this is how fashion wants to present her.” For who, though?” West told his then-wife at the time, adding that the sultry style was “affecting [his] soul and [his] spirit as someone that’s married and [a] father.” “A corset is a form of underwear. “Skims is so based on a lot of the Yeezy ideas,” West told Carlson. Kanye West Live Updates: Kanye reposts Yasiin Bey's version of shirts (Newsweek)

Kanye West shares texts apparently from Diddy following his interview with Tucker Carlson. Follow for the latest updates.

West posted screenshots Friday morning of several text message chains on his Instagram page that appeared to show him arguing with friends about whether he should sell the shirts. He told Boosie, "Don't speak on me" in a caption for the post, according to reports by Complex. "I do certain things from a feeling," West said. Boosie said in his tweet he doesn't want any "smoke" and that West's loved ones "really need to get @kanyewest help." "I told you this was war," West wrote. Earlier Friday, West posted a series of screenshots on Instagram that appeared to show text message arguments between West and some of his friends about West's plans to sell the new t-shirts. "The problem is that when a celebrity or an important person or a politician and a prominent politician starts to talk like this, they may think it's just a rhetorical flourish," Kiely told Newsweek's Simone Carter. He also called model Gigi Hadid a "privileged Karen" on Friday in response to comments she made earlier this week on Instagram. King said people who have been referenced in Trump posts that depict violence on social media "start to have actual death threats," a trend King said he has also noticed after some of West's posts. "This mockery of the Black Lives Matter movement and his now denunciation of the movement as some sort of hoax flies directly in the face [of what he's said]," the statement continued. The T-shirts, which have generated controversy over the last several days, appeared to be a source of argument between West and some of his friends. West has recently criticized Black Lives Matter, calling the movement a "scam."

And while the pivot toward arch-conservatism has undoubtedly paid off for West (who went from being $53m in the hole to a multibillionaire), the true value for him is being accepted again. Even as West said slavery “sounded like a choice” or announced a presidential run under “the Birthday party”, he hosted pop-up gospel music concerts. Soon, West was turning up in the lobby of Trump Tower to endorse the Donald’s presidential run. But in the interview with Carlson, West scorned his mother, a former professor, as a “liberal actress” who ripped him from his conservative-leaning father, Ray West, an ex-Black Panther, laying the foundation for a strained relationship. He also took aim at Jared’s brother Josh for helping himself to an outsized stake in the SKIMS fashion brand West co-founded with Kim Kardashian. “I just feel rich people are always too cool to ask for help trying to impress each other at dinner parties,” he tweeted, adding that he wanted “to help the world” and needed “help to do it”. For the better part of an hour, West was unsmiling and long-winded; among many other things, he likened his choice to debut a “white lives matter shirt” at Paris fashion week to Tonya Harding attempting a triple axel (“It’s using a gut instinct”), attributed the fashion-industry backlash against the shirt to a campaign orchestrated by Anna Wintour (“All her dolls had something to say”), and compared Donald Trump to Ralph Lauren (“He has his own buildings. Vogue’s global fashion editor Gabriella Karefa-Johnson denounced the shirts as “pure violence” and West as “dangerous”. A music industry underdog who beat the odds, West was a staunchly pro-Black pop star who sampled soul music and celebrated Black beauty. “You can judge for yourself,” Carlson said to the camera. Carlson was warming his viewers up to West as a lead-in to an exclusive, two-part one-on-one interview, shot at West’s Yeezy fashion brand headquarters in Los Angeles.
