Art the Clown is finally back! While the online discourse is focused on “original” horror, the truth of the matter is that all horror is on fire.
[SCREAMBOX](https://bloody-disgusting.com/tag/screambox/) announced today that the acclaimed horror documentary Pennywise: The Story of IT, an in-depth look at the 1990 miniseries based on Stephen King’s iconic novel, will release November 22 as a Collector’s Edition Blu-ray! Thirty-plus years after its release, the popular two-part miniseries IT and its infamous villain live on in the minds of horror fans around the world. Following his gruesome demise in the first film, a sinister presence has brought Art back to life to rein terror on the residents of Miles County. This truly was a huge risk for us, but we absolutely love and believe in this movie. Cinedigm, SCREAMBOX, and Bloody Disgusting took a huge swing here and decided to not only put Damien Leone‘s new slasher epic in theaters nationwide, but also do so UNCUT. ‘Tis the season.
It is not expected to light the box office on fire. Still, it is an unrated, 138-minute slasher sequel that is getting something of a conventional (if limited- ...
Yes, the film is loaded with blood (20 gallons worth) and gore, even if I think (like Hostel II) just one mid-film murder goes beyond conventional hardcore horror movie violence and/or ‘good taste.’ Terrifier 2 is very much ‘for the fans,’ partially because it’s cheap enough not to have to win over that many new converts. And just this year, we’ve seen good-to-great performances from Scream ($140 million on a $24 million budget), Nope ($171 million/$69 million) and The Black Phone ($160 million/$18 million). As someone who grew up with a critical consensus arguing that (most) horror was the lowest of the low, it’s been fascinating to watch the genre’s reputation grow. Just this last six weeks, we’ve seen The Invitation (which played in the Dracula sandbox without being an explicit Dracula flick), Pearl (which will earn about as much as X from this past April), Barbarian, Don’t Worry Darling (somewhat sold as a supernatural fantasy thriller) and Smile (initially intended for Paramount+) earn good-to-great grosses relative to budget and expectations. While the desire for character was given as the reason for the 138-minute runtime, truthfully, most of the good stuff is in the first act. That audiences find communal horror to be cathartic in dealing with real-world horrors has also changed the conversation from ‘horror is evil and bad for kids’ to ‘horror is healthy and can work as cinematic therapy.’ However, if we were still having the ‘horror is evil’ conversation, Damien Leone’s Terrifier 2 would be exhibit A. The plan was obvious, as horror is still considered a ‘worth seeing in a theater’ sub-genre and horror movies are cheap enough that they don’t have to break box office records to break even. A strong, simple concept (demons who smile at you before you die), a primal hook (a kidnapped child gets phone calls from the killer’s dead victims) and/or marquee baddies (Michael Myers, Ghostface, Jigsaw, etc.) all make for a safer theatrical bet even without conventional movie stars. It played to fans of down-and-dirty 1970’s-style grindhouse horror shows (think the original Maniac). Still, it is an unrated, 138-minute slasher sequel that is getting something of a conventional (if limited-time) theatrical release not through Fathom Events (which just had its best September ever) or the like. Even Spiral: From the Book of Saw, which only earned $40 million on a $20 million budget, was successful enough (presumably after factoring in PVOD and post-theatrical revenues) to justify a Saw X. Even as the ‘recovery’ shifted from late 2020 to early 2021, most of last year was held up by monster movies (Godzilla Vs.

Lauren LaVera will star as Sienna, Art the Clown's new adversary, in Damien Leone's Terrifier 2.
The stakes are survival, so it’s so exhausting.” LaVera found herself using that exhaustion, depression, and discomfort she was feeling for the role, and hopefully, that reads when people see it. It was just sticking to me when I was covered in dirt and blood, and it was awful for hours. For instance, when LaVera is being thrown into a wall, it’s her throwing herself into the wall while Thornton is just acting like he was the one doing it. Please do that.’ However, with that said, she did have a bit of a love-hate relationship with the costume, as it wasn’t as cool to wear as it looked. I started with the scene, it was just a mother-daughter scene, so I was like, ‘Oh, it’s a normal family drama,’ and that’s exactly how I approached it until it turned into a horror film. “Like any other job, I got it through my agent and didn’t know much about it.

There was a big kill scene that we had begun filming and that I wasn't happy with the way it was coming out. Jericho: Well, I think it's just a matter of time until this was going to happen because if you love horror movies — and they're so huge right now — but like you said, it's going back to the well. So it came out the way that I hoped and Covid was, in that regard, a blessing in disguise for us. It was just the story that I wrote and I didn't realize how long it was going to be until I got in the editing room. It's not like Damien became Francis Ford Coppola and just said, "No, I want to change the set and change this." One of the reasons why I did the convention was like, "Oh, I got to talk to Art the Clown." I think that's one thing that stuck out to a lot of people, the runtime. I was kind of just like, "I don't know if I like the title, and it's a clown." So anyways, that's kind of where it started, and then Damien had a couple ideas, and then came up with this really cool scene towards the end of the movie. Listen, whether I was in it or not, I was still super excited for "Terrifier 2," because I think Art the Clown is the most iconic horror movie killer that we've had since Jason Voorhees and Freddy Krueger in the '80s. I think we spoke about a lot of different things and you connected with my manager to talk about some dealings and stuff. So I think — and you can correct me if I'm wrong about this, Damien and David — but I think I was kind of one of the earlier supporters of "Terrifier."

We thought it would be as important as the hacksaw scene in part one. We worked on it for two days, and we knew it would be one of the most important scenes, if not the most important.

It’s great to see Art the Clown back on screen, especially with his new friend and a new final girl. Other than a few scenes going a bit longer than needed, the pace flows well, and the horror rarely lets up. ComingSoon Editor-in-Chief Tyler Treese spoke to professional wrestling legend and Fozzy frontman Chris Jericho about his role in Terrifier 2.
All I care about is the people that appreciate my work and making new fans with the work that I’m doing. And he’s like, “I see you did some improv.” And I was like, “Yeah.” And he’s like, “Very funny. So to me it’s like, it’s not the age, it’s what you’re doing with your experience to continue to create great moments and do great work that anybody that’s a fan of yours can be proud of. I mean, there’s so much of a buzz, a momentum behind the band than there ever was before, and we’ve been going for 22 years. That’s when it really started kicking in: I still look like Chris Jericho, I still work like Chris Jericho, so the age thing really doesn’t affect me. So I went and saw The Rolling Stones twice over the last year and I’m watching Mick Jagger, who was 79, he’s 80 now, I believe, and he still looks like Mick Jagger, and he still sings like Mick Jagger. Now the improv has now become part of the script and the scene is a memorable one. And right out of the gate, he was so riveting because he really is a clown, honking horns, riding tricycles, being a clown, but just being one of the most vicious killers I’ve seen in movies in a while. We had discussed a few different ideas, when Damien was putting together the script and there was actually another great idea as well that just didn’t really fit the narrative of the story. You’re always representing horror through your social media, through your podcast, and you’ve kind of incorporated some horror elements into your own wrestling work with the Painmaker gimmick you had, which is a cool blend of metal and horror. You got to be a part of the second film and your post-credit scene was filmed at a mental institution. It wasn’t like filthy, but it wasn’t like the cleanest of places.
Exclusive: David Howard Thornton and Lauren LaVera talk about Terrifier 2, their favorite kill scenes, and what they'd like to see for a Terrifier 3.
“I have said to Damien that I would love to see Jonathan’s character [Eric] be more fleshed out. I have to say, the actress involved outdid herself, having to go to that level of fear and hysteria every single day for a week. Both Thornton and LaVera commented that they would be on board for Terrifier 3 and shared with us a bit about what they’d like to see from it. when I read the script, the first time I think I went back and read it five more times because I was shocked by it. Though, there are some scenes that are a lot more graphic than others, which were done so in order to live up to the notoriety of the hacksaw scene from the original Terrifier. As it turns out, Leone’s sequel has apparently upped the ante and gone from a powerful Metallica song to an even more explosive track, which star I’ve been saying if Terrifier 1 is ‘Kill Them All’ by Metallica, then Terrifier 2 is ‘Master of Puppets.’ This has just gone to a completely different level, and that goes all across the board. Screen Rant Interviews Terrifier 2's director Damien Leone about bringing Art the Clown back in a sequel that raises the horror bar from the original.
What a dream that was and what a surprise. He talked about Terrifier and said Art the Clown is the next big horror character that you got to look out for. And one of the reasons why it took so long is because there were so few of us and the scope of the film was so big, and we never wanted to compromise what was in the script. And she has to be very physical and covered in blood and covered in makeup and all these gashes. And I tell her all the time. And they all tell me, "I'd never heard of Terrifier but I saw his face and I had to click on the movie and see what the hell that was about." So we're shooting in a giant tin can in the middle of the winter with space heaters going in between takes and with no running water. So you're really struggling and just trying to convince everybody: Just think of the finish line! So I think part of it is the way he looks, especially his personality. I hear from so many people before Terrifier was popular that they were just scrolling through Netflix, and they just came across the thumbnail of his face. And that really showcased Art the Clown, and that's when I decided to turn him into a slasher. So I talked my mother into giving me money to make a short film on 35 millimeter because I figured that would be my calling card.
That's not always a bad thing — I like a lot of crap! But not this. While I freely admit the film is loaded with some incredibly practical gore, the movie ...
And yet, the "everything and the kitchen sink" vibe of the whole thing renders "Terrifier 2" an above-average slasher extravaganza. The first "Terrifier" introduced us to Art the Clown (the very committed David Howard Thornton), a malevolent, seemingly immortal serial killer clown who shows up on Halloween to torture and obliterate anyone who gets in his way. While the overall plotting and storytelling remain simplistic, Leone has a much firmer grasp on tone and atmosphere here, conjuring up gruesome, evocative imagery that has genuine power, in a deranged sort of way. So when I heard a "Terrifier 2" was on the way, I was wary. "Terrifier 2" is the "Halloween II" of this series, and it's turned me from an Art the Clown agnostic into a bit of a fan. I found Zombie's first "Halloween" to be odious junk; a pale imitation of John Carpenter's classic film, loaded with some of the worst dialogue ever captured on screen.
