The Los Angeles Lakers lost to the Phoenix Suns on Wednesday but there was plenty to take away. Here are the two studs and one dud from the contest.

While he scored just six points in 28 minutes, he did finish with nine assists and seven rebounds to go along with his three steals and two blocks. In this game particularly, Reaves showcased how he can have a two-way impact on the game with his high effort and basketball IQ. The preseason win-loss record does not matter at all for LA as the team is instead looking to improve its operation before the 2022-23 season begins.

He and James seemed to pick back up on the chemistry they built last year, finding each other on cuts or in transition. The team has made a concerted effort to have multiple players rebound and push, allowing Westbrook to fill the wing on a break. He showed why there was a debate over the summer on whether he should start. With the bevy of guards on the Lakers roster, new head coach Darvin Ham has implemented actions to have James off the ball. He has increased the number of possessions starting in the corner, that flow into dribble hand-offs or being a screener for one of the guards. He looked as physically imposing as ever, bouncing guys off him in transition and still getting to the basket at will.

Anthony Davis has been extremely injury-prone with the Los Angeles Lakers and he proved again on Wednesday why fans cannot trust him.

Everyone knows that the ceiling of the team is directly correlated to Davis and how much he plays. And while there were more complex issues with the team last season, him missing all that time (and eventually the playoffs in 2021) is a big reason why LA has failed in the last two years. Redick was in Philadelphia, to be clear, but some of the ways he moved without the ball and came off hand-offs reminded me of the actions Philly would run for Redick. I was skeptical he would see real minutes coming into the season, but I am starting to come around to him being the “break glass in case of emergency” form of instance offense and shooting off the bench. If they commit to being better on the glass, rebounding could quickly go from a weakness to a strength for the Wolves. It will likely take some time for the Wolves to figure out how exactly they want to incorporate Gobert’s individual offense into the team, evidenced by a couple awkward lobs/passes by teammates tonight, but the one connection that looks ready from day one is with Jordan McLaughlin. A couple of things were immediately noteworthy with Gobert on the floor. The talent disparity was still glaring the entire night, which speaks to the depth that Minnesota has on the roster this season.

He has shown a nice ability to get steals, and his ability to hit the open man has improved since he made his summer league debut a few months ago. But the younger Pippen has a nice set of skills in his own right, and he showed off some of them on Wednesday. Early in the game, Bryant made a nice effort to get out on the fast break, which allowed him to get on the board with an early basket and some free throws. Bryant was almost a non-factor in L.A.’s first two preseason games, but tonight he showed he has the ability to make a noticeable impact on the team this season. He made his impact felt on both ends of the floor by securing defensive rebounds, looking to intimidate opposing players in the paint defensively, scoring inside and running the floor in transition.
