The University of Florida has been tight-lipped about the candidates vying to be its next president, until now.

Trump posted Thursday on his social media platform, Truth Social, that Sasse's resignation was " great news” but that the “University of Florida will soon regret their decision to hire him as their President.” The University of Florida will soon regret their decision to hire him as their President…." "This was led by the search committee, with direction from the board of trustees, as laid out in Florida statute," he said. He is the author of two New York Times best-selling books, "The Vanishing American Adult” and “Them: Why We Hate Each Other — and How to Heal.” He was one of seven Republican senators who voted to convict former president Donald Trump of incitement of insurrection in his second impeachment trial. Such words earned him his share of Trumpian abuse, including a nickname, “Liddle Ben Sasse”. On Friday, in messages viewed by the Guardian, a Trump insider said the Sasse move was “about Ricketts money to DeSantis. Sasse called Trump a “ Otherwise his Senate career has been a total nothing burger.” It is the greatest job in the world, and it will remain my number one focus for the remainder of my term.” The committee unanimously felt Ben Sasse is a transformational leader.” He wrote: “We are in a period of unprecedented upheaval. This is what Pete wanted so he can appoint himself to the Senate.” NBC News reported that Sasse’s move was the result of Republican rivalries. The senator does not have to face voters again until 2026.

Sasse is the sole finalist to become president of the University of Florida, the school says, and the Republican senator has indicated he will take the job.

He was one of seven Republican senators to vote to convict the former president of “incitement of insurrection” after the Jan. Of the seven GOP senators who voted to convict Trump during his second impeachment in 2021, two others are retiring. At the time, Sasse brushed off the criticism from his party and noted his conservative voting record in the Senate. He said Nebraska party activists were “hacked off” that he condemned Trump’s statements to a crowd just before the riot at the U.S. In March 2016, the Nebraska GOP’s Central Committee did censure him for his criticism of then-candidate Trump. The state GOP’s Central Committee passed a resolution last February expressing “deep disappointment and sadness” about Sasse’s approach to his work in the Senate. Sasse is a second-term senator who has had a complicated relationship with Republicans in his own state after his outspoken criticism of Trump. If Sasse were to leave the Senate after that, when Ricketts retires and leaves office, his successor would appoint Sasse’s replacement. And the academic, sometimes acerbic senator who once seemed headed for a presidential run became sidelined amid his party’s embrace of the former president. [unanimously recommended Sasse](https://www.wfla.com/news/education/university-of-florida-officials-unanimously-select-sen-ben-sasse-for-new-president/), a decision that will have to be voted on by the school’s board of trustees and then confirmed by the board of governors. Sasse will be one of several Republican critics of former President Donald Trump who won’t be returning to Congress next year -– and one of many who paid a price back home for his antagonism. He is to visit the campus on Monday to meet with students, faculty and other members of the university community, the school said.
