The Oscar-winning medical marvel—congrats on the twins!—stars in “Alaska Daily,” ABC's new drama about a disgraced journalist that is shockingly great.
A network drama that doesn’t sacrifice its social tenets for mass appeal: Who figured we’d have to go all the way to Alaska to get that? While its central mystery is certainly engrossing, I’m inclined to stay in Alaska for the locals. But it’s that callousness, which gets in the way of her being a decent human, that really triggers her downfall—not a journalistic source that needs more verifying. Eileen might have more formal experience than her peers in the Anchorage newsroom, but in a place like Alaska, that only gets her so far. She’s a woman who didn’t come to prominence in her career by making friends, and she’s tired of watered-down, overly sanitized journalism that lacks sting. The only way she’ll be able to solve these murders before someone else turns up dead is to find out why her walls are so impenetrable. It’s only natural that she would have a difficult time adapting to a different set of standards and practices. No one knows more about that than Roz (Grace Dove), a gallant Alaska Native assigned to work alongside Eileen. Normally, any show in which a character says, “Stop acting like a bunch of scared woke wussies more interested in eating their own than reporting the news,” would send my eyes rolling like a hamster wheel out of control. They perfectly illustrate the show’s suggestion that, despite all of its natural beauty, Alaska has just as much of a dark underbelly as anywhere else. Stories of Eileen’s gruff treatment of the junior staff at her newspaper don’t help her case, either. This is the rare, modern network drama to balance mass appeal with semi-progressive ideology.

The Oscar winner leaves ambition behind for a by-the-numbers ABC drama about a big-shot reporter forced to start over at the local level.
Such eagerness to be found out can be partly chalked up to the way procedurals work: Each week, there’s a mystery, and each week, the mystery is solved. Everything you expect to happen in “Alaska Daily” will happen, and there’s too little humor, romance, and wit to turn a rote crime procedural into a comforting weekly watch. And after two episodes, the show could set itself on a better course. (“Alaska, Daily” also has a long-term, serialized investigation focusing on a pattern of murdered Indigenous women.) Audiences can take comfort in getting firm answers to one plot while anticipating answers to the other plot in future episodes. With a staff of 25 covering the largest state in America, there’s plenty of stories to be found north of Vancouver, he promises, and the paper (yes, they still print a physical paper) needs Eileen’s experience, instincts, and tenacity to keep the citizens of our country’s third least-populated state in the know. Within the first two episodes, multiple adults confess to major felonies without so much as light pressure being applied — and confess on the record! The latter point proves particularly vexing — given the series’ half-assed attempt to explain the divisive state of America by claiming a lack of effort on “both sides” — but that, at least, is an Episode 2 problem. At worst, they’re insulting — to anyone who’s actually lived in a “small town” and to anyone who expects more from people clearly capable of it. [Alaska Daily](https://www.indiewire.com/t/alaska-daily/),” created by McCarthy (who writes and directs the pilot), and starring Swank (who also serves as an executive producer), is objectively not good. The second-most senior editor is similarly in the dark over why journalists and cops may not always see eye to eye. One young reporter is so naive, she needs a pep talk to understand the basic purpose of her job. Harnessing the power afforded an Oscar winner, let alone someone with two little gold men on their mantel, is a delicate endeavor.
Workplace drama follows the disgraced journalist as she moves north to start over in Anchorage.
Six months later, Eileen is holed up in her New York apartment, ostensibly working on a book to clear her name, when her old editor Stanley (Steppenwolf legend Jeff Perry of “Scandal,” “Grey’s Anatomy,” et al.) offers her a job as a reporter at the Alaska Daily, luring Eileen with a potential blockbuster story: the disappearances of a number of local indigenous women, which have been largely ignored by the local authorities and, yes, the media. This is a series that gets all the details right about the daily grind of general news and investigative journalists who spend hours upon hours working their sources on the phone and in person, scouring every corner of the Internet for morsels of information, showing up at crime scenes with notebook and smartphone in hand — and of course, lobbying their editors to make sure their story makes the paper and gets good play. We won’t bury the lead: The ABC journalism drama “Alaska Daily” is a solid, impressively credentialed and entertaining albeit conventional series that plays like a comfort-viewing, hourlong show from the 1990s.
Two-time Oscar winner Hilary Swank returns to series television in "Alaska Daily," a too-earnest, tropey drama that's well-intentioned but heavy-handed in ...
Cut to Elizabeth on a plane bound for Anchorage as the paper’s new star reporter. She attributes it to “woke wussies” and cancel culture (a tip of the editorial cap to topicality); cut to four months later and she’s writing a book about the general in her ridiculously large, plush apartment with way too many panoramic views of Manhattan. and immediately clashes with her new colleagues (pushy New York City reporter and all that, but you know they will eventually bond). Swank is surrounded by an appealing supporting cast — including [Matt Malloy,](https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0540164/) [Meredith Holzman](https://www.imdb.com/name/nm4290965/), [Grace Dove](https://www.instagram.com/_gracedove/?hl=en) and [Pablo Castelblanco ](https://www.instagram.com/castelblancop/?hl=en)— and Perry, who, unencumbered by the … Elizabeth is convinced he’s involved in illegal international arms deals and her one trusted source gives her incriminating information to back that up — with one huge problem: the general and his team claim the documents are forged. The Vanguard “re-reports” (weird terminology) the story and Eileen quits in a self-righteous fury — just as stories of her alleged bullying several of the paper’s female staffers are brought to light.
The new ABC drama "Alaska Daily" stars Hilary Swank as a journalist who investigates cases of missing and murdered indigenous women.
"He's got an eye for, obviously movies, but also for the long game. "Tom McCarthy had me at hello," Hilary Swank told WABC Entertainment Reporter Sandy Kenyon. "It's a story about how the missing and murdered indigenous women crisis is being largely ignored," is how the character played by Jeff Perry explains it in the first episode.
'Alaska Daily' review: Hilary Swank stars in ABC's journalism drama from the writer-director of 'Spotlight'.
And Swank brings the right kind of cantankerous nuance to the role. Suffice it to say, the newsroom of the Alaska Daily is more diverse than most. It’s a good story to dig into and McCarthy was smart to set up a narrative that ensures an Indigenous journalist (Roz) is on equal footing with Eileen. I’ll also note that “Alaska Daily” is scarily accurate about the way journalists lose their minds when there’s free food in the newsroom. It’s wish-fulfillment fantasy — reporters too convinced of their superiority don’t actually do good work and would sooner swallow their laptop whole than work at a regional newspaper no one in New York has ever heard of — but Swank and Perry are the kind of actors who convince you to come along for the ride. Eileen’s bull-in-a-china-shop routine is a bit clichéd, but it also rings true, to an extent. Which is why, when an old colleague comes visiting from Alaska and offers her a spot at his modest paper — The Alaska Daily once had a staff of 100, now it’s down to 25 (oh, I know this story well) — she’s begrudgingly persuaded to start anew in Anchorage. I also liked the brief moment when Eileen sneaks out one morning after a one-night stand, takes her nose out of her navel for once, pauses to look around at her surroundings and is stunned to realize, oh right, the landscape here is gorgeous. (I’ll be happy to see that trope die a thousand deaths.) These feel like important concepts for the average person to see in action. “I’ve spent my whole career battling a bunch of good ol’ boy misogynists only to get canceled for being one myself,” Eileen says, incredulous that she, a white woman, would experience any sort of consequence for being just as insufferable as the jerks around her. If you’re in the mood for anything that doesn’t center on first responders, the options have been limited. Here’s how we’re introduced to Eileen Fitzgerald, the veteran investigative journalist played by two-time Oscar winner Hilary Swank in the new ABC drama “Alaska Daily.” She’s working on a big exposé for a New York paper when someone lower down the food chain approaches her with concerns about her source.
