Constance Wu to Open Up About Being 'Canceled' for Tweets ... (Variety)

On this week's Red Table Talk, Constance Wu opens up about her tweets in 2019 and the consequences that followed.

“I kept my mouth shut for a really long time about a lot of sexual harassment and intimidation that I received the first two seasons of the show. “Luckily, a friend found me and rushed me to the ER.” This producer, he is an Asian American, but because this show was sort of a beacon of representation for Asian Americans, and I sort of, became a symbol of representation, I didn’t want to sully the one show with sexual harassment claims against the one Asian American man who was doing all this better work for the community.” “It’s surreal that a few DMs convinced me to end my own life, but that’s what happened,” she wrote at the time. “They were saying I didn’t think of the other people’s jobs on the show, how selfish that was and how I was, like, behaving like a diva.” At the time, she tweeted that she was “literally crying” over the renewal because she had to turn down a passion project.

Constance Wu opens up to Seth Meyers about accusing a 'Fresh Off the Boat' producer of sexual harassment in her new memoir, 'Making a Scene.'

“People didn’t understand the context of those tweets,” Wu told Meyers. Following her Twitter outburst, many accused the “Crazy Rich Asians” actor of being ungrateful for the show that kickstarted her career and made major strides for Asian American representation onscreen. “Because if somebody does something out of character for them, usually something’s going on in their life.” In 2019, Wu drew harsh criticism on social media for complaining on Twitter about “Fresh Off the Boat” getting renewed for a sixth season. “That was the last essay I wrote for the book, and only after being pushed by my editor — like, ‘You should write about this. She said while promoting her memoir last month at the Atlantic Festival that she felt betrayed by the few people who knew about the producer’s alleged behavior but continued to be friendly with him behind the scenes.

I was in therapy and under observation for a long time.” And it made me feel like Asian Americans feel like it would be better if I just didn’t exist.” “In fact, to be honest, what I went through was pretty common.” “There was a huge pile on.

Constance Wu recalls feeling like she 'deserved to suffer' after ... (Today.com)

During a visit to Red Table Talk, Constance Wu said that after backlash from her controversial tweets in 2019, she felt like she "deserved to suffer.

However, she noted that despite doing her job for the love of performance, it's easy to get caught up in "the noise." She noted that writing, specifically her new compilation of personal essays, has been the art form that has provided her the most healing. In July of 2022, Wu returned back to social media after a three-year hiatus as her new Prime Video series, "The Terminal List," was released. “I needed a wound to prove it, to prove that I hurt as bad as everyone said I deserved to hurt,” Wu wrote. "I felt like even that might not be enough because I felt like the world was saying, 'You will never suffer as much as you deserve to suffer. "I felt like the only thing that would prove to her that I felt as bad as she thought I deserved to feel would be if I died," the 40-year-old said.
