Two quarterbacks who were No. 2 overall picks in their respective drafts will square off Sunday when the Jets face the Steelers in Pittsburgh.
New York will return home to host a Dolphins team that is coming off their first loss of the 2022 season. This marks the third straight year the Steelers have played in Buffalo. The lead swelled to 10 points after Pickett capped off a 12-play, 82-yard drive with his second touchdown run with 13:36 left. Conversely, the Steelers fell to 1-3 after falling for the third time in as many weeks. Carter's pick came after Pickett hit George Pickens for a 26-yard gain that put the ball on the Jets' 31-yard line. The comeback started when Zach Wilson -- making his season debut -- hit Corey Davis for a five-yard score with 7:41 left.

Kenny!” at Acrisure Stadium were too much even for him to ignore. Coach Mike Tomlin went to Pickett after a fourth consecutive slow start by incumbent starter Mitch Trubisky. The score was set up by a Mikah Fitzpatrick interception of Jets quarterback Zach Wilson on the preceding series.
Steelers rookie quarterback Kenny Pickett replaced Mitch Trubisky to start the second half in Sunday's game against the Jets.
[Cleveland Browns](/nfl/team/_/name/cle/cleveland-browns), saying after the game that he was definitively standing by Trubisky. • Diontae Johnson has to catch that ball that was intercepted, even though it was tipped at the line of scrimmage. • Just in case you don’t follow the Jets, their 3-0 lead was only the second time in four games they’ve held a lead. • Rookie DE DeMarvin Leal continues to be a disruptive player on the field. • The 12-play, 82-yard TD drive by the Steelers was the longest of the season, both in plays and yards. • Kenny Pickett had his first pass intercepted and his second pass completed. • The second interception by Pickett was not a good decision, throwing off balance across field to Freiermuth, especially with 3 ½ minutes left.
As a part of the 90th season celebration, the Steelers honored alumni from every decade during halftime of Sunday's game.
"It's more than a dream, it's greater than a myth, it's a lasting legacy to be a part of Pittsburgh Steelers history," said Holmes. It was great to hear from them and talk to them." It's so special to be back and everyone has been so welcoming and great to us." It's going to be a similar mix of things, but it's always neat to know the history of it and how it's going today. I always look forward to talking to different guys and reconnecting. But it's great to come back now and be a part of it.
Sophomore quarterback Zach Wilson returns to action when the 1-2 New York Jets travel to take on the 1-2 Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 4.
Interestingly, this week presents the perfect opportunity to aggressively blitz. When passing, chipping as much as possible with the backs will have to be in the game plan. Why blitz him with extra players when the man already holds on to the ball too long? Expect some empty sets with the double-wing look (TE and RB), as either player could be involved in late-released after a chip. Well, for starters, the use of jet-motion will need to happen. This includes the last meeting, a Sam Darnold-led victory in December 2019 (16-10 final score). Expect Conor McDermott to start for the Jets, opposite rookie Max Mitchell. Vegas has this one as a near toss-up, considering the NFL home team usually garners around three points. This means that this is a biggie (aren’t they all?), as one of these two teams will fall to 1-3, whereas the other squad would improve to a respectable 2-2. Pittsburgh won the first nine meetings, stretching from 1970 to 1986, before finally falling to their AFC brothers in October 1988, 24-20. The moment Wilson came up limp in Philadelphia, in early August, each Jets fan feared the worst. This week, however, the opponent screams historical dominance.
Steelers QB Kenny Pickett entered the game for Mitchell Trubisky on the first offensive possession of the second half versus the New York Jets.
But Pickett's Hail Mary on the final play of the game was picked off in the back of the end zone, and Pittsburgh fell to 1-3. But, obviously, we also turned the ball over." You want to be aggressive, but at the same time, the clock was our friend there and we wanted to possess the ball. "We didn't do much in the first half, not enough offensively, and I thought he could provide a spark for us." Trubisky's benching came after a listless first half from a Steelers offense that mustered just eight first downs in seven possessions, and failed to reach the red zone. "Obviously, we were moving the ball well.
Winners and losers from the Pittsburgh Steelers 24-20 loss against the New York Jets Sunday afternoon. WINNERS Kenny Pickett - This one feels a little.
Olszewski has done little to create impact plays in the return game and he got popped by LB Kwon Alexander on a jet run for no gain. Johnson had a slant go through his hands – perhaps the pass was tipped or his vision obscured by the dropping DT – but it’s a play he has to make. OT Pass Pro – The o-line held up well in pass protection the first three weeks of the season. His pocket presence has been a problem and he runs himself into too many pressure and sacks, including in today’s game. After throwing an INT on his first career pass, Pickett got the ball back off a Minkah Fitzpatrick INT and snuck the ball in for his first touchdown. Pickett came in for Mitch Trubisky in the second half and provided a massive spark for the Steelers’ offense both in terms of atmosphere and crowd noise. His steady tackling continues to be an underrated element of the game. Minkah Fitzpatrick – Just put his name in pen before the game. It ran the gamut from false starts to illegal hands to the face to illegal shifts to (another) ineligible man downfield call on a RPO, at least the third this season. The only blemish was a kickoff out of bounds Pickett provided better offense than what Trubisky was doing but the hype of him playing well early on shouldn’t allow you to forget that throw. But Pickett threw an ugly INT on his second throw that helped propel the Jets’ comeback.
The 1-2 Pittsburgh Steelers returned to Acrisure Stadium to take on the 1-2 New York Jets in a pivotal Week 4 matchup. In what ended up being Kenny.
A completion on first down to Freiermuth gave Pittsburgh another first down, and then Harris ran for 16 yards and a first. The Jets got a first down on the first play of the drive, but on 3rd and 6 later in the drive, Wilson’s pass was intercepted by Minkah Fitzpatrick and he took it back to the Jets 4-yard line. On 2nd and Goal, it was initially ruled that Hall fumbled reaching for the goal line and it was recovered by the Jets. Back-to-back completions to Johnson led to a first down, and three plays later Pickett went downfield and completed a pass to Pickens for 26 yards. On 3rd and Goal, Pickett scored his first NFL touchdown on a QB sneak. A third down defensive holding penalty against Arthur Maulet gave the Jets a new set of downs, and on 2nd and 10, Breece Hall ran for 16 yards and a first down. On the next play, Pickett’s first throw was deep down the field to Chase Claypool, but he couldn’t grab it and it was intercepted off his hands by S Jordan Whitehead. On 3rd and 6, Wilson found WR Elijah Moore for a 20-yard gain and a first down. Lawson was flagged for roughing the passer, and the penalty gave the Steelers 15 yards and a chance at at a field goal. On 3rd and 11, the Steelers’ defense got a stop, but the Jets got on the board on a 38-yard field goal by K Greg Zuerlein. Harvin’s punt went 36 yards to the Jets 30, and was fair caught by WR Braxton Berrios. The Steelers started with the ball and after a five-yard run by RB Najee Harris, they picked up a first down on a completion to TE Pat Freiermuth.
Despite making the move at QB t Kenny Pickett at halftime, Steelers fall to 1-3.
Trubisky threw a 23-yard pass to Johnson in the back of the end zone that was initially ruled an incompletion, but Tomlin challenged the play. Wilson capped the possession off by catching a 2-yard touchdown pass from wide receiver Braxton Berrios, who had taken a pitch on a double reverse, to give New York a 10-0 lead early in the second quarter. Trubisky completed a 14-yard pass to Freiermuth, but his final pass, a Hail Mary attempt, was intercepted. Replay showed the front of Johnson's foot was narrowly out of bounds while he drug his back foot and the play call was upheld. Pickett's first career pass was intercepted by former Pitt teammate and current Jets safety Jordan Whitehead on a deep pass intended for Chase Claypool. "We didn't do much in the first half, not enough offensively, and thought he could provide a spark for us."
A changing of the guard at quarterback didn't lead to a changing of results Sunday for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Kenny Pickett replaced starter Mitch ...
“I wanted to come in and get the win, so that’s really just the emotions. “It’s not the way you want to start a season,” Highsmith said. It’s going to show a lot about us how we bounce back this week.” Tomlin said he wasn’t ready to announce a starter for the game next Sunday at Buffalo. Pickett, who replaced starter Mitch Trubisky after halftime, threw a 26-yard completion to George Pickens that set up the Steelers at the Jets 31 and the clock winding inside five minutes. It was Pickett’s third of the game. As a defense, we didn’t get off the field enough, especially in the second half, and that’s going to haunt me.” Instead of celebrating Pickett’s debut which included two touchdown runs by the first-round pick from Pitt, the Steelers were trying to make sense of a loss that prevented them from being in a four-way tie for first in the AFC North. Hall fumbled on his 2-yard touchdown run but officials determined the ball had crossed the plane of the goal line before coming loose. “It’s very frustrating losing to people that you know that you’re better than, more talented than – especially when you have the team that we have. On their final two possessions, the Jets totaled 146 yards and got nine first downs. The biggest bruise that the Pittsburgh Steelers defensive captain felt Sunday, though, was to his ego.
Needing a spark: Steelers Coach Mike Tomlin felt the Steelers needed a spark after going into halftime down 10-6. So, he made a change at quarterback, sending ...
We all have to be accountable to make these plays and be a good defense." And I think first down was critical for us in the first half because when we were able to win on first down, it kind of set us up for second and third. "That was something I wanted to bring to the table. "It's a cycle where we all have to work together. "I think that really put us in a tough spot, and when we did dominate that first down play, it really set them back. "As a defense, we didn't get off the field enough especially in the second half," said Heyward. And then when we did hit home, we didn't clean up on the back end. It's definitely on me and I have to improve." "I'm sure I'll be able to update you guys the next time we come together." We intend to do that." "We didn't do much in the first half, not enough offensively and thought he could provide a spark for us." "I'm not going to talk extended as we sit here," said Tomlin.
Green & White Erase a 10-Point 4th Quarter Deficit to Score Second Straight Road Win in 2022.
Unfortunately for the Jets, the shuffling continued when rookie RT Max Mitchell was carted off the field in the second quarter and replaced by Conor McDermott. The starting safeties totaled 3 INTs with Joyner's early theft leading to a field goal and Whitehead, a Pittsburgh native, coming down with Pickett's first pro pass. They made it 20 straight points at the beginning of the fourth quarter as Pickett stared down a Quinnen Williams pressure, sat tight and delivered on time to Freiermuth for an 18-yard gain on third-and-8. Instead of the Jets pushing their lead back to double digits, Carl Lawson was called for a personal the foul on starter Mitch Trubisky and that set up a stadium record 59-yard field goal from Chris Boswell as time expired. Wilson converted a third down with a huge 35-yard connection to WR Garrett Wilson and kept the game alive with a 22-yarder to Corey Davis on fourth-and-7. In an exciting Week 4 contest, the young Jets took the Steelers' best punch and answered Pitt's 20-point run with a 14-point run in another improbable victory.
The thing about a first is that it can only happen once. In the case of Kenny Pickett's NFL debut — coming in front of his home crowd, no less — it gave the ...
His stats — 7 of 13 for 84 yards and an interception — were indicative of his struggles reading the field and inconsistency with ball placement to this point in the season. There were fleeting shades of that game Sunday on the North Shore, and the Steelers can only hope there will be more to come next weekend and beyond. The offensive line helped him on a pair of quarterback sneaks, one to convert a first down on his first drive, another to give him his first professional touchdown and the Steelers a 13-10 lead midway through the third quarter. But Trubisky simply didn't do enough to keep the offense moving, and it got him benched at halftime of his fourth game with the Steelers. It will be a new age of Steelers football, assuming that Pickett takes the field first as the starter next Sunday in Buffalo against the Bills, a trendy Super Bowl pick. All told, Pickett finished 10 of 13 for 120 yards with three interceptions but also 15 yards rushing on six attempts, including a 7-yard first-down run on 3rd-and-6 that galvanized the building.

Wilson finished 18 of 36 for 252 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions in his first game since injuring his right knee in the preseason opener. Pickett drove the Steelers into New York territory, but his sideline throw to tight end Pat Freiermuth was high and late. The catch gave New York a 10-point lead. The Steelers, now 0-7 all-time without injured star outside linebacker T.J. The play was initially ruled a fumble at the 1, but overturned on review. Breece Hall ran for a 2-yard touchdown with 16 seconds remaining and Zach Wilson and the New York Jets spoiled Kenny Pickett's debut in Pittsburgh by rallying for a 24-20 victory over the Steelers on Sunday.

On top of his not having any answers on defense, his conservative offensive approach is doing very little to help the cause. He also let one punt bounce in front of him that cost the Steelers 10 yards in field position. Cam Sutton also had an interception, but the Jets had too much success over the middle, which is a recurring theme with this defense. If Highsmith wants to be an elite pass rusher, he has to finish more often. Run defense is a team effort, but letting up those plays late is not a good look for the front seven. Tackles Dan Moore and Chukwuma Okorafor, in particular, had a hard time containing the Jets’ edge rushers. Jets running back Breece Hall had a 7-yard run late in the game to set up his 1-yard plunge for the winning score. Chase Claypool had no catches on two targets and failed to break up Pickett’s first interception. Running backs: The Steelers rushed for a season-high 119 yards with Najee Harris leading the way with 74 yards on 18 carries. Diontae Johnson only had two catches for 11 yards. Grade: D Quarterback: Kenny Pickett made his professional debut in relief of Mitch Trubisky, and he gave the offense a noticeable spark by leading them to two touchdowns and a 10-point lead early in the fourth quarter.
In a perfect world, the Pittsburgh Steelers would've inserted Kenny Pickett into a more advantageous situation than he found himself Sunday.
“Now the great debate is, Trubisky should be the third-string quarterback and (Mason) Rudolph should be the backup. “I said from moment one that the minute Pickett goes in he has to be the starter until he is hurt or until he proves, decisively, that he can’t do it. We get into some problems with the Steelers receivers and offensive linemen. Plus, we break down the Penguins’ training camp cuts and Aaron Judge versus Barry Bonds. Zach Wilson drove the Jets down the field twice with — I don’t want to say minimal effort because he looked pretty good — but how hard was it? Then road games against the 3-1 Miami Dolphins and 4-0 Philadelphia Eagles.

“A lot of emotions,” Pickett said of stepping on the field for the first time in the regular season, “but the only thing I’m thinking about is winning out there. Breece Hall’s 2-yard run capped the drive with 16 seconds to go and made it 24-20. Ostensibly, Trubisky was brought in to serve as the QB1 bridge between Ben Roethlisberger, who retired last season after 18 years with the Steelers, and Pickett. His second score put the Steelers ahead 20-10 with 13:36 remaining. But I like to just keep it where we are in terms of what transpired here today. Pickett is clearly the people’s choice.

It's the first time Pittsburgh has started 1-3 in back-to-back seasons since 1934-1935 (as the Pittsburgh Pirates). Sunday marked the first time Gang Green has won consecutive road matchups since 2015 (after going 50 straight road games without back-to-back wins). When they get the ball to where they want to get it to, it's tough to win." New York (2-2) earned their first road victory in Pittsburgh since 2019 and are .500 or better through four games for the first time since 2017. [Kenny Pickett](https://www.nfl.com/players/kenny-pickett/) guided the Steelers to a 20-10 lead early in the fourth quarter after two rushing touchdowns. They're getting the ball to the guys they wanted to get it to.
The emotion on Kenny Pickett's face as he sat at the podium following his first regular season NFL game told the whole story. The Steelers lost, the team was ...
The combined record of the four opponents standing in between the Steelers and their bye week is 12-3. They are a better group than they were in Week 1 and should continue to take more steps forward as long as Pickett can protect the ball. The new life that Pickett breathed into the team and fanbase during his first regular season action against the Jets might take a while to bear fruit. He looked like an upgrade over Trubisky in limited action but, assuming he starts next week and as the season progresses, Pickett will be thrown into the fire. Sure the offensive line had their fair share of struggles, but that is also a position group that has improved mightily since the beginning of the season. And if they lost to the Bills, which is likely, it could end anyone's expectations that this season isn't dead. The Steelers offense did a number on the defense during the first four weeks of the season. Even before the quarterback change, the Pittsburgh Steelers found some underutilized playmakers early and often in this game. That's a tall order for a group that seems to be depleting by the week. By subbing in Pickett, Tomlin has sped up the clock and put more pressure on his team to win now. That's something that I wanted to bring to the table. They'll walk away from Week 4 looking to regroup, but the questions now are can they, and with who at quarterback?
It's four weeks into the 2022 season. With a 17-game schedule, we're technically not even through the first quarter. But it's hard to find any sort of.
Change perspective, accept the suck, and be happy with the flickers of light that happen each week. There can – and hopefully will – still be encouraging aspects of the season. It’ll be fun to watch Pickett develop, the highs and lows of a rookie quarterback who has shown plenty of promise in relatively limited action. It’ll still take a lot of doing but for all my doom and gloom, I don’t want to assume the next several seasons are the 80s all over, an ugly and forgettable chapter. Turning to a veteran quarterback, getting off to a bad starts, Belichick and company began the year 2-5, and figuring things out towards the end of the year under their new identity. The Steelers are unlikely to be favorites in any of those games and with good reason. The best plan was to beat the Jets, go 1-3 the next four, and try to find a groove against AFC North teams out of the bye week. That’s the model, that’s the path, and I sure don’t like those odds. From 2020 to 2021, the And that’s really the issue. But it’s hard to find any sort of path – or hope – for the rest of the Pittsburgh Steelers’ season. They’re taking the ball away but some of that is unlikely to be sustainable, especially as the schedule gets tougher.
It only took 3 ½ games for Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin to decide he'd seen enough of Mitch Trubisky. Tomlin couldn't have chosen a better ...
There were some good moments for Pickett in the game besides two INTs, one of which came late in the fourth quarter and set the Jets up for the go-ahead score. Ultimately, Pickett’s first game didn’t go as planned since the Steelers lost to the Jets, 24-20. Trubisky had clearly been unimpressive, and while he wasn’t the worst, the Steelers had lost two in a row coming into the Jets game. It’d be one thing if Trubisky was doing just enough for the Steelers to win. Pickett also threw an INT, but that’s to be expected in the first regular season action of his career. But this move was inevitable and bound to happen at some point in the season.
Pat Freiermuth also had a productive day with 85 yards on 9 targets. The run game saw Najee Harris gain just over 4 yards a carry with 74 yards on 18 carries, ...
Terrell Edmunds left the game late in the first half, and his loss was a big blow to the Steelers defense with his versatility in coverage. With a good number of key defenders looking like they will be on the injury report this week, and T.J. Two interceptions hit the hands of their intended receivers, even if they weren’t the best/smartest throws to take, and the third interception was on a Hail Mary, so they weren’t the worst interceptions, but it stands out that with three drives ending in turnovers the offense still scored two touchdowns. The Steelers switch to Kenny Pickett for the second half saw better ball movement and two touchdowns for the offense. Losing this game puts the Steelers at 1-3 and facing a four game stretch facing teams that are a collective 12-4. This game was considered a great chance for the Steelers to turn the early season around, or a chance to claim a win before hitting a brutal stretch of their schedule.

The 2017 first-round pick was meant to be a bridge, and the Steelers crossed it. He successfully executed a 1-yard quarterback sneak on fourth-and-1 during his first drive, but on the very next play, Pickett's first pass attempt was picked off when he tried to go deep to That the offense responded to Pickett's spark isn't to be overlooked. "It's our job to tune out the noise and to remain committed to the path that we're on and work to get better in an effort to change the outcome of these games. He shook a defender to run into the end zone. I just kind of put all the preparation in and prepare like the starter. I spent a lot of time at the facility to get ready. There were no indications a change was on the immediate horizon, until suddenly, it was there. Known for delivering messages to his team through his media sessions, Tomlin was clear Tuesday: Shut out the noise and stay committed to the plan. "We haven't done enough to win the last two football games, so there's reason for alarm as it pertains to that, but largely I'm seeing improvements in all areas, whether it's individuals or whether it's the collective. "We didn't do much in the first half, not enough offensively and thought he could provide a spark for us. "Just Coach came in at halftime and said I was going.
