Who is Bailey Zappe? Rookie in at QB for Patriots after Brian Hoyer ... (Sporting News)

The Patriots are relying on their third-string quarterback Bailey Zappe after Brian Hoyer left the team's Week 4 contest with a head injury.

The Patriots selected Zappe and seemed to eye him as a long-term backup and insurance policy behind Jones. The Patriots can take time to develop him. They confirmed that by signing him to a two-year contract extension on eve of free agency, meaning he will be with the team through 2023. While there were some questions about his overall arm strength and how long it would take him to transition to a pro-style offense, he did enough to establish himself as a mid-round prospect in the 2022 NFL Draft. Zappe was prolific during his lone year with the Hilltoppers. He lasted just one quarter before exiting the game with a head injury.

8 Patriots takeaways: Bailey Zappe pushes Packers to OT, but ... (masslive.com)

The Patriots showed plenty of fight in Green Bay, but couldn't convert on a short field in overtime.

It was the fourth time this season the Patriots have scored on their opening possession. He turned it on in the second half, and though the Patriots stopped him to open overtime, they couldn’t do it a second time. In overtime he ripped off another 20-yarder to set the offense up at midfield, but they couldn’t capitalize on it. With Marcus Cannon looking good as New England’s sixth lineman, they opted to play him in Wynn’s place in the second half. After Packers wide receiver Romeo Doubs caught a bubble screen, Jones punched the ball out and recovered it to give New England the ball in Green Bay territory. Isaiah Wynn missed a block, the quarterback was crunched, and didn’t return due to a head injury. It was a big play right out the chute. Thanks to the pick-six, the Patriots took an improbable 10-7 lead into halftime. Bill Belichick had the future Hall of Famer’s head spinning in the first half, and he made some unforced errors, like throwing a pick-six to Jack Jones (more on him in a moment). Zappe managed to play mostly mistake-free football and shepherded the offense well enough to play more than 60 minutes. Opposite them was reigning MVP Aaron Rodgers, who has made a career out of winning track meets, and the Patriots were on the road in front of a hostile Green Bay crowd. Undeterred, they pushed the hosts to overtime, but ultimately let an improbable upset slip though their fingers.

Patriots vs. Packers takeaways: Bailey Zappe's efforts fall short in ... (NBC Sports Boston)

On a day when not many gave the Patriots much of a chance against the Packers in Green Bay, Bailey Zappe of all people almost pulled it off.

In addition to being called for a holding penalty and a false start, Wynn was partially responsible for Hoyer exiting the game when he let Rashan Gary blow by him to blast Hoyer for a sack. New England's rushing prowess is certainly a good sign and could emerge as the team's offensive identity in 2022. The Packers knew runs were coming, and New England ran anyway, taking the lead in the fourth quarter on a well-executed Harris rushing TD. [ exited with a head injury just 10 minutes into the first quarter](https://www.nbcsports.com/boston/patriots/brian-hoyer-exits-patriots-packers-after-huge-hit-bailey-zappe-takes-over?b), the Patriots' slim hopes of winning seemed dashed. 1 rushing offense in the NFL, Zappe doesn't have the strongest arm, and his limitations were on display Sunday.

Rodgers’ first pass of the game was a gain of 24 to Allen Lazard. Of the Packers first five drives, they punted on three and turned the ball over on the other. At 5:45 of the first quarter, Hoyer was knocked out of the game due to a head injury. On the next series, Hoyer was knocked out of the game due to a head injury. Aaron Rodgers outduels Bailey Zappe at Lambeau Field (SB Nation)

With Mac Jones ruled out on Friday and Hoyer sidelined early in the contest, it looked like the Patriots might get run off the field. It was a valiant effort from the Patriots given the circumstances. A critical play on that drive was this third-down connection between Rodgers and Randall Cobb, putting the Packers on the cusp of field goal range: The teams traded punts on their first two possessions, but then Rodgers and the Packers offense took control of the game, wearing down the New England defense with a long possession that brought the clock down to the end of the overtime. The play was ruled an incompletion on the field and upheld after a Green Bay challenge. The ensuing drive featured Marcus Cannon in the game as a sixth offensive lineman, and the Patriots ran the football on six of the seven plays, including this touchdown run from Damien Harris to break the tie and give the Patriots a 24-17 lead at Lambeau Field. Packers fans, perhaps with good reason, were screaming for a delay of game penalty on the play, as the ball was snapped well after the play clock expired. Zappe shows great touch on the throw, dropping it over the underneath defenders and then in front of the safeties. A key play on that drive was this beautifully-thrown go route along the right sideline from Rodgers, connecting with Lazard for a huge gain: With the Packers taking over possession at their own 31-yard line, and having a pair of timeouts to work with, it seemed like Green Bay might break the game open. New England was just outside the red zone with over a minute remaining, trailing 7-3, and looked in position to at least add a field goal before halftime. It looked in the first half as if the Packers would run away with the victory.
