“Assuming that Scott Frost continues to rebuild the Nebraska football culture in his first season as coach, what is the minimum that you would be satisfied with ...
As he talked about the importance of rebuilding the winning culture that sagged badly on Riley’s watch, his negligence was actually inflicting even worse damage on his alma mater. I saw several above-average recruiting classes and thought he would care too much about the program to continue to flounder in his self-absorbed fantasy land where a focus on defense, special teams and the systematic development of players are only for coaches who don’t have a world-class offensive scheme. I thought Frost would adapt and set the program straight, even after stumbling to a 9-15 record in his first two seasons. All they really wanted in Year One was for Frost to get Nebraska into a bowl game, something he ultimately failed to do in all four of his full seasons at the helm. I didn’t see Frost’s headlong crash coming, but then again, I’m the guy who wrote that the improvement from Riley to Frost would prove to be as dramatic as the upgrade from James Buchanan to Abraham Lincoln. Almost as many fans (38 percent) said they’d be satisfied with a sub-.500 season that year — not exactly a daunting challenge for a coach who seemed to be a rising star.

Nebraska looks to invigorate the home faithful as is hosts Indiana Hoosiers in conference college football action on Saturday.
A win at home in front of the sold-out faithful in red would go a long way to feel like this team is capable of rebuilding. It’ll have plenty of space to fill in West Stadium, too, once the new football building — set to be completed next summer — houses the training table and academic advisement center. But I really want to have the concourses all connected. “It’s like its own little stadium — it’s kind of weird,” Nebraska Athletic Director Trev Alberts said at the Big Red Breakfast. Such a plan passes on costs to the fans, though. South Stadium, a giant wedge of Memorial Stadium and, is fed by a couple dedicated gates and sits atop classrooms used by the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Meager widths of aisles and seats exist under grandfathered rules that will disappear when Nebraska starts to work on it.
This Nebraska team was hugely vulnerable and Indiana could not take advantage. Now, the Hoosiers' path to a bowl looks complicated.
Now, the Hoosiers' path to a bowl looks complicated. Then, they'll need to get a scalp in a difficult November: Penn State, at Ohio State, at Michigan State, Purdue. But Bazelak struggled for most of the evening to find a rhythm without his preferred targets, and it cost IU dearly. The Hoosiers' last two drives of the first half covered 145 yards in a combined 13 plays. A fumble recovery in the end zone for a touchdown kept them in the game, barely. Bazelak struggled to find a rhythm passing the ball, not just in terms of completing passes but in getting comfortable with his receivers.

The blocked punt that led to a touchdown was such a welcome development. That used to be such a weapon for Nebraska. Take a screenshot of the standings. At one time I thought some of the Westies would be able to line up and route the Big Red. The Huskers have five games left against the West and three of those at-bats will be at home. The Huskers are 1-1.
We watched a performance that was aided by coaching rather than hindered by it. It complimented a team that refused to fold. I'll take it.
Indiana ball at the 36. The Thompson to Palmer connection netted a difficult first down at the Hoosier 43ish. Hoosier third down on the two yard line. Hoosier ball on the one yard line. Defense and kicking game show life as Joseph, Huskers handle Hoosiers on Homecoming.
Joseph and his team needed something to build on, and winning a game that was tied in the fourth quarter is a good starting point. He threw a 71-yard touchdown pass to Palmer early in the fourth quarter to give the Huskers the lead. “We finished today in the fourth quarter,” Thompson said in the postgame press conference. They stayed patient as the Big Red frittered away excellent field position in the scoreless third quarter with sloppy offensive line play, including three penalties over the course of back-to-back series that started at the Indiana 49 and the Husker 44. Joseph and Mark Whipple didn’t dramatically slow down Nebraska’s offensive pace — the Huskers rarely huddled — but they held nearly a 10-minute advantage in time of possession and practiced complementary football for the first time in recent memory. Chris Kolarevic and Malcolm Hartzog teamed up to deliver a blocked punt for a touchdown, something NU hadn’t done since Halloween 2009 in a 20-10 win over Baylor, the day Jared Crick had a school-record five sacks for the Big Red.

The Nebraska football team turned things around for at least one game and there's one big reason why the defense took a big step forward.
When looking at the last time the Huskers had this few tackles, it shows. The Nebraska football team might have been covering better. Certainly, defense is right at the top of the list, but that still leaves the question, “why was the defense suddenly better?”
