Keys to Victory: Michigan vs. Iowa (Maize n Brew)

Michigan plays on the road for the first time this season. Here's what it needs to do to win.

The Wolverines need to throw the kitchen sink at Petras in this one. However, the depth and athleticism of the group can allow them to make life hell for opposing offenses, especially ones like Iowa’s. In order for the Wolverines to win, it’s pivotal to win the turnover battle. Iowa football has a certain brand about it: play solid defense, run the ball quite a bit, and eat up the clock to make the game as ugly as possible. Here are a few keys to making sure the Wolverines walk out of Kinnick undefeated. For the first time this season, they will hit the road and play the [Iowa Hawkeyes](https://www.blackheartgoldpants.com) at Kinnick Stadium for Big Noon Kickoff on FOX.

Michigan ended up punting on fourth-and-9 from the Iowa 44. Yards and points might be hard to come by for the Wolverines, who have lost their past five meetings in Iowa City, but they might not need many to win Saturday. Michigan has 236 yards of offense but has just 13 points to show for it. Iowa has ran just 18 offense plays for 91 yards. A personal foul flag negated a 17-yard gain and pushed Iowa back into a second-and-25 from the Michigan 33. He had two more receptions on the drive and now has four for 45 yards. The Hawkeyes opened the drive with a 12-yard run by Kaleb Johnson but went backwards after that. Donovan Edwards recovered at the Michigan 3, but it set up a third-and-28. Iowa tried to run up the middle with Leshon Williams on third-and-4, but he only picked up 2. McCarthy’s pass was deflected on third down. Eyabi Anoma and Taylor Upshaw teamed up to sack Petras on third down, and Eyabi hit him on fourth down too. Spencer Petras capped the drive with a 5-yard touchdown pass to Luke Lachey.

Michigan vs. Iowa college football predictions: Picks for Big Ten ... (New York Post)

Michigan and Iowa square off Saturday in a Big Ten confrontation that sets up as a defensive struggle if the Hawkeyes have it their way.

Michigan routed Iowa 42-3 in last year’s Big Ten title game. It might not be 30 carries like last week but 20-plus handoffs seems highly probable. Iowa (3-1, 1-0) has allowed just 23 points through four games while putting together some terrific defensive efforts. Still, it is hard to take the under when one team is averaging 50 points. The 23 points allowed through four games is the lowest by the Hawkeyes since they gave up 20 in 1956. His strong running (478 on the season) has taken the pressure off Wolverines quarterback J.J. All signs point to Michigan winning this game by two touchdowns. Star running back Blake Corum rushed for a career-best 243 yards and also ran for two scores to raise his season output to nine. However, the Wolverines were pushed at home last weekend by Maryland while recording a 34-27 victory. AZ, CT, IA, IL, LA, MI, NJ, NY, PA, TN, WV, WY only. Michigan vs. Iowa: Five takeaways from the Michigan football victory (WolverinesWire)

Michigan went to Iowa City to take on the 3-1 Iowa Hawkeyes on Saturday and going into the game, the Wolverines had lost four-straight games at Kinnick ...

The Wolverines lost their toughness there for a few minutes and allowed Iowa to get two touchdowns before they tightened everything up. The maize and blue would not attempt passes unless it was third and long, and Iowa was ready for what was coming. The Wolverines need to get the pass rush working earlier in the game though, especially against a formidable offense. McCarthy was also used in the run game and the read-option came back into the playbook. The only ‘flaw’ the sophomore had was missing Roman Wilson for a touchdown on a deep ball. Like last week against Maryland, the Wolverines recorded four sacks in the second half and Michigan was able to get to Spencer Petras. After seeing him do this against a tough Iowa defense, his name should be talked about a little more than it is in the Heisman conversation. The Wolverines did a poor job getting pressure against Iowa in the first half — it was nonexistent. McCarthy missed Roman Wilson by a hair for a touchdown on a deep shot, but the Wolverines rushed for 131 yards on the ground against Iowa in the first half. In the second half, Michigan was much, much better. The Hawkeyes forced a three-and-out the next drive and Iowa took the ball deep into Michigan territory before turning the ball over on downs. The Hawkeyes scored a touchdown right into the fourth quarter to make it a 20-7 deficit.

Michigan vs. Iowa takeaways (Maize n Brew)

No. 4 Michigan improved to 5-0 on the season after beating Iowa 27-14. Here are takeaways from the game. Michigan's defense generates pressure when they ...

Blake Corum rushed for 133 yards with a touchdown, Donovan Edwards rushed for 29 yards with four receptions for 21 yards and a touchdown. With Michigan up 20-0, they could have put the game away a little quicker. McCarthy didn’t force the ball downfield in this one, as they played with their safeties back for most of the afternoon. Besides that blemish, McCarthy was careful with the football, going 18-of-24 for 155 and a touchdown. It took a while for Michigan’s pass-rush to get home, but they sure did when their backs were against the wall and Iowa’s offense started generating first downs. 4 Michigan improved to 5-0 on the season after beating Iowa 27-14.
