Premier League derby days. In some ways, the best days in a Premier League season. Derby Days in the Premier League
Our analysts provide their best bets, tips and analysis for Match Week 9 of the season.
[Southampton](/soccer/team?id=376) hosts [Everton](/soccer/player/_/id/198940/Everton) in what should be a low-scoring affair. [Crystal Palace](/soccer/team?id=384), Chelsea has a ton of lineup questions, for reasons ranging from injuries to the international break to Graham Potter's first Premier League game. Would you be willing to take a chance on the [Liverpool](/soccer/team?id=364) lad scoring this week against Brighton at (+2000)? Fulham matches have had the most total expected goals of any in the Premier League this season, averaging 3.0 per game, and Newcastle isn't far behind at 2.7 total expected goals per game. He has six goals in seven Premier League games this season, and he scored four times in two Nations League games for [Serbia](/soccer/team?id=6757) in the past week. The odds suggest that Chelsea (-116 to win) has improved simply by firing Thomas Tuchel. Do we see any bets we like to take advantage of the residual shell-shock lingering for the Newcastle keeper as he faces [Fulham](/soccer/team?id=370)? I'm taking over 2.5 goals (-105) in this match. The Seagulls have played well on the road this season, winning at Old Trafford and London Stadium and probably deserving at least a point at Craven Cottage. But if I had to make a play on this game, I'd take the goal and a half on Brighton. [Arsenal](/soccer/team?id=359) (-102) vs. [Chelsea](/soccer/team?id=363) and West Ham, and only held one opponent below 0.7 expected goals.

The tide is beginning to look like it's turning for Aston Villa and I fancy them to get at least a point from Elland Road. Southampton are just a place below the Toffees as they lost 1-0 to Aston Villa before the international break. I once described Wolves in this way and I think it's a similarity they both share. Manchester City are still unbeaten and are looking at the possibility of ending Matchweek 9 top of the table if other results go their way. It's a tough first test for the new man, and I don't think he'll find his first points as Brighton manager at Anfield. Arsenal have had a good start and sit 1st in the table, Tottenham are a few places below the Gunners but are still unbeaten. On the other hand, Bournemouth have been able to recover somewhat since their 9-0 trouncing at Anfield a few weeks ago. There's a gradual improvement that can be seen on the pitch, but they still lack that cutting edge. Both sides will be looking to finish in the top four this season.

63% of his goal kicks have ended inside his own area and his 22-metre average goal kick length is the shortest in the league. 48% of Saints final-third throws are hurled into the box (the highest in the league) with Mohammed Salisu being the man to deliver them. Leno sends just 35% of his goal kicks long, with 62% played short into his own area – the second highest proportion in the league. That uptick is perhaps related to the presence of a certain Norwegian striker. However, the player with the second-most open-play crosses is a midfielder. And it is probably no surprise to see Alexander-Arnold top the list again with 7.1 open-play crosses attempted per 90 (38 in total). Progressive passes aim to capture this and are defined as “completed open-play passes in the attacking two-thirds of the pitch that move the ball at least 25% closer to the goal”. Despite only featuring in three games, Núñez has been on the end of more Alexander-Arnold open-play crosses (3) than anyone else. He’s averaging 14.2 progressive carries per 90 (second highest in the league) and 7.3 take-ons per 90 (highest). This season’s 6.8 progressive passes per 90 is more than triple the 1.9 per 90 he recorded in the last campaign. This season the opposite is true. Thus far, the Hammers have flown under those expectations thanks to an attack that has completely sputtered out. Defensively, the Hammers needed work, but their attack was clicking. Tottenham’s got plenty of clinical attackers in their squad and their defense is strong enough that they just need one or two chances to nick this win. The margins are quite thin between these two sides, which is why the stylistic matchup comes into play. When it comes to handicapping Tottenham Hotspur matches, the numbers matter a little less than the stylistic matchup.

- Arsenal vs. In fact, they've come back from losing positions in four of their seven matches this season. His creative counterpart Martin Odegaard missed the Bournemouth match with a knock, and then started both games for Norway over the international break, so Arsenal could be relying on the Brazilian for a heavier role in the first league match back. With a rest over the international break after missing out on a Brazil national team spot, he should be geared up for this match. The Brazilian has flown under the radar because he, somehow, hasn't registered a single assist yet. He bagged a brace in his first-ever North London derby back in 2015, scoring in each of his first five appearances in the rivalry and nine of the first 10. In that regard, they've made a habit this season of earning positive results from early concessions. Given the aforementioned home dominance, there's plenty of reason to believe Arsenal will reign supreme at The Emirates this weekend. Furthermore, neither of these teams have been held off the scoresheet in any of their first seven Premier League matches this season; they've both scored in all seven games. In those 16 matches, there have been six draws, with the other 10 matches finishing with a victory for the home team. Arsenal vs. The Sporting News brings you a closer look at these two teams and predicts who will come out on top.
LONDON: North London derbies are always feisty encounters but Saturday's clash between Arsenal and Tottenham...
Saturday (1400 GMT unless stated): Arsenal v Tottenham Hotspur (1130), Bournemouth v Brentford, Crystal Palace v Chelsea, Fulham v Newcastle United, Liverpool v Brighton & Hove Albion, Southampton v Everton, West Ham United v Wolverhampton Wanderers (1630). United are on a four-match winning streak in the league but have not played a league game since beating Arsenal on Sept 4 and face a manic schedule of nine matches in October. They will travel to The Emirates for the lunchtime kickoff in buoyant mood and with forward Son Heung-min back in form after a 14-minute hat-trick in Tottenham’s 6-2 victory over Leicester City in their last match. Tottenham have carried the momentum of last season and are now on a 13-match unbeaten streak in the league going back to April even if there is a suspicion that their results so far have been more impressive than some of their performances. However, Spurs will have to overturn a horrid record at their neighbours if they are to leapfrog them and go top, having won at Arsenal only once in their last 29 league visits. With Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester United still recovering their equilibrium after turbulent starts to the season, a path has opened up for the north London clubs to gate-crash the title race.

"In this period I think this is disrespectful for the coach that works in Juventus and for me working in Tottenham," he said. Tottenham: Preparations for Conte's first north London derby on the road have been disrupted by events in Italy, where Juventus head coach Massimiliano Allegri is under extreme pressure after his side's disappointing start to the season. The England international has struggled for game time so far this season and is perhaps not as integral to Arteta's plans as two players who will be in doubt: Thomas Partey and Oleksandr Zinchenko. Here is how you can watch the match and what you need to know: Mikel Arteta's Arsenal side lead the Premier League with six wins and one defeat so far with Antonio Conte's men only a point further back.

A defeat would give defending champion AC Milan the chance to move level at the top of the table with a victory at Empoli. With the rest of the top four teams not playing on Saturday, Napoli could move at least three points clear with a win over Torino. Villarreal will move into the top four spots if it can win at Cádiz, which got its first victory in the last round but remains in the relegation zone. The game comes before Barcelona goes to Inter Milan in the Champions League next week. Union Berlin, the only undefeated team in the Bundesliga, visits Eintracht Frankfurt. The Arsenal vs. The service has exclusive rights for this Premier League season. Tottenham game is exclusive to BT Sport -- showing on its BT Sport 1 and Ultimate channels -- making the BT Sport app the go-to location for streaming the game live if you don't already have the channels as part of your TV package. Cord-cutters can access its channels via the BT Sport website and app from £25 per month. It's pricey, though, with prices from $70 per month, so if you don't plan on using FuboTV for its other soccer access -- including FIFA World Cup, Serie A, Ligue 1, Liga MX and others -- then you may be better served by Sling Blue, which also carries USA Network from $35 per month. You should be sure your VPN is set up correctly to prevent leaks: Even where VPNs are legal, the streaming service may terminate the account of anyone it deems to be circumventing correctly applied blackout restrictions. Sling TV's Blue plan includes USA Network making it a great option for those wanting to watch Premier League action. If you find yourself unable to view the game locally, you may need a different way to watch the game -- that's where using a VPN can come in handy. So if your internet provider or mobile carrier has stuck you with an IP address that incorrectly shows your location in a blackout zone, a VPN can correct that problem by giving you an IP address in your correct, nonblackout area. With a VPN, you're able to virtually change your location on your phone, tablet or laptop to get access to the game. Spurs are also just a point off the pace being set by Mikel Arteta's Arsenal and remain unbeaten in the 2022 Premier League campaign thus far, with five wins and two draws. The Gunners sit at the top of the table, one point clear of defending champions Manchester City, going into today's early kickoff, though this Tottenham side will be no pushover.

Conte has morphed the club into a formidable foe, and the players will be eager to end the club’s trophy drought this season. Although Ben Davies and Lucas Moura remain uncertain for the crucial game, and most importantly, cornerstone keeper Hugo Lloris remains doubtful due to a thigh injury. Arteta has the squad and a clinical striker to contend with any club in the Premier League.

As a two-part Premier League derby fixture, the second city games of 2002-03 are arguably the purest essence of local rivalry ever seen in 30 years of the competition. The last three top-flight games between the sides in 2009 and 2010 produced only three goals in total but a season like 2002-03 lives on in supporters’ memories for eternity. Liverpool’s most recent league fixture in the current season was a goalless draw and that took this fixture to 24 0-0s, which is six more than any other combination of teams in Premier League history, so it’s no surprise to see that at 2.26 goals per game, this is the lowest scoring fixture in this list of derbies. Recently this fixture has been the away team’s dream and the total of 21 away wins in Premier League Manchester derbies is more than any other fixture in the competition’s history. Providing a steady stream of goals, comebacks, penalties and red cards, this is one of the best derbies in English football. Overall, this is not only the most one-sided derby in English football but the most one-sided game in English football; of the 1,538 fixtures to have been played at least 50 times in English Football League history, Fulham’s win rate against Chelsea (9.5%) is the lowest. Yes, it contains Alan Shearer’s 260th and final goal in the competition, and yes Lee Cattermole did collect four yellows and a red in eight games against Newcastle but when it returns to the Premier League we want, and in many ways need, more horsepower from the Tyne/Wear derby. The seventh Premier League game between the sides comes on Monday but the previous six have served up three red cards, making this the Premier League’s most sending off-fuelled local rivalry on a per game basis. The most recent of the six encounters saw Norwich win 3-0 at Carrow Road in March 1995, a game notable largely as being the last time a team started a Premier League local derby with two Canadians in their starting XI. There’s Kanu’s hat-trick in the late 1990s and Robin van Persie’s treble – also at Stamford Bridge – in that 5-3 game in 2011 but the games between them are often decided by that most un-derby like thing of “good play” and “goals” rather than the seething hatred that flows through most local rivalries. In the negative column, this is the only pairing in this list not to produce a single red card in the Premier League but on the other hand it oozes goals, with a monstrous 21 of them in only six games (that’s 3.50 per match). The East Midlands claims an important role in the use of “derby” in sport, with a 12th century football game in the Derbyshire village of Ashbourne (sorry, but football simply didn’t start in 1888) widely believed to be the birthplace of the term, albeit in a game that contained up to 1,000 players, theoretically enough to allow Leicester to adequately defend a corner.

Soccer expert Brandt Sutton has locked in his EPL best bets for Brighton vs. Liverpool on Saturday, October 1.
- Liverpool vs. Sutton has analyzed the Brighton vs. [Visit SportsLine now to see the best bets for Brighton vs. The Seagulls have allowed 17 shots on target, the second-fewest in the league, and only three of the goals conceded have come during the run of play (two own goals). The Seagulls come in knowing they have had success against the Reds the past couple of years. The Reds lead the league in shots with 118, 39 more than the Seagulls. It's the most conceded by any club in their opening seven games of any Premier League season. Steven Gerrard's team are 2/1 with Sky Bet for victory despite winning just once in their last eight away Premier League matches - a stinking run backed up by some very worrying attacking metrics. Teams that usually achieve away wins are in confident mood and are comfortable with the structure and tactics of their approach. To win a game of football away from home in the Premier League if you are outside the 'big six' takes a lot of doing. United will have to ruffle the feathers of City's players to stand a chance in this one and if Jack Grealish gets selected down the left, then United's right-back Diogo Dalot's foul count is worth a dabble with Sky Bet. Yes, the sample size is small but away teams have won just 23 per cent of their games this season which is a big drop to the average away win percentage of around 35 per cent over the last five seasons.

Mikel Arteta has said he believes Arsenal's 3-1 win over Tottenham has sent a message to his players they can beat the Premier League's elite.
"Looking at the table and seeing the club in this position is great," continued the Spaniard. It's nothing that we have done yet and there's still a lot of things to improve. That should give them confidence and belief."
A rare Thomas Partey strike and goals from Gabriel Jesus and Granit Xhaka secured a well-deserved 3-1 win, Spurs losing for the first time in the league ...
The Brazil forward should have headed in a second of the afternoon moments later but sent his effort well wide when picked out unmarked by Saka. The lead would last just 11 minutes, however, a rash challenge from Gabriel Magalhaes on Richarlison leading to a penalty which Kane converted with the usual aplomb to continue his excellent form in this fixture, seven of his 14 goals against Arsenal coming from the spot. Partey got the ball rolling with his first Arsenal goal from outside the box in his 65th match for the Gunners, with Kane levelling from the spot to take his tally in this fixture to 14 in 18 appearances.
Arsenal have ensured that they'll spend yet another weekend atop the Premier League after an emphatic 3-1 win over Tottenham in the North London derby.
Brazil will be tracking what the duo does but it could be a decision that comes down to the final days before the World Cup. It's always up to the player to avoid giving a referee a decision to make in these scenarios, and Arsenal showed Spurs why it's so critical not to make dumb mistakes. Kulusevski picked up a knock while on international duty for Sweden but for Spurs' sake, hopefully, he'll be back in the rotation sooner than later. After defeating Leicester City 6-2 before the international break, the hope was that Tottenham would bring momentum through the time off and into this headline match, but it wasn't to be as their struggles at the Emirates will continue. Mistakes are punished in derby matches, and Saturday it was Spurs who let the occasion get to them.
Tottenham boss Antonio Conte said Emerson Royal's red card in the 3-1 defeat against Arsenal "killed the game."
Sometimes you see situations that could be a red card, instead yellow card or no yellow card. For this reason, every part of this situation, in my opinion, has to be top." "The red card killed the game, this is truth, but not because we remained with 10 men but because [our] team [which was] really, really offensive and also in the four or five minutes to make the substitutions, we were so offensive that it was really difficult to defend and we conceded the third goal.
