Weather update: The Charlotte area are under a tropical storm warning or watch. Hurricane Ian will bring gusty winds and heavy rains.

Highs are predicted to fall from 70 on Thursday to 60 Friday, and then climb to 65 on Saturday and 66 Sunday, the forecast showed. Tuesday and Wednesday should be all sunshine, according to the NWS Greer office. Areas from northern Florida all the way up through New York City could see impacts from Ian, which has resumed strengthening.

All of coastal Georgia remains under storm surge warnings, with impacts from Ian expected to last into Friday night. The worst of Ian’s rainfall is expected to move offshore, but several more inches are possible northeast of Orlando through Thursday afternoon.

Hurricane Ian is expected to lessen to a tropical storm and pass between Columbia and Florence Sept. 30 after making landfall near Charleston.

Lexington County, the town of Lexington and West Columbia offices remain open. Richland County and city of Cayce and Columbia offices also will be closed Sept. West Columbia will close the Riverwalk, Fowler Park and Butler Park at noon Sept. 30 and go to remote learning for the day. All other West Columbia and Cayce parks will be closed Sept. Though it is expected to cross the Midlands as a tropical storm later that day, meteorologists warn it will likely be powerful. Ian is predicted to regain hurricane strength and make a second landfall as a Category 1 storm south of Charleston Sept. The headquarters of Publix, a major grocer in the Columbia market, were heavily impacted by Ian as the hurricane crossed over Lakeland, Fla. Since making landfall and crossing the Florida peninsula, Ian has reduced to a tropical storm. While emergency beds will likely have a wait list, the outside awning is open in the evenings for people to stay dry. But the organization has been working with families to ensure students are taken care of as schools are closed. The utility company said it had already been lowering lake levels to control aquatic vegetation growth and continues to do so in preparation for Ian.
