Paramore: 'We realised this band isn't worth risking our health for' (The Guardian)

One of the most influential bands of their generation, the pop-punk pioneers were nearly torn apart by infighting and industry sexism.

“After 15 to 20 years of fighting like a bunch of brats in front of the world, you eventually learn some coping skills and communication methods,” says Williams. This Is Why is the last album they’re contracted to deliver on the deal that Williams signed as a teenager. “Only now that we’ve felt lighter about the band, it’s like I don’t feel defined by that song,” says Williams. Sometimes the first day back can be demoralising, says York, but yesterday felt like “flipping on the switches in the cockpit”. “We all went through this crazy shit and people are still not kind out there in the world,” she laments. “It was more in the air we grew up in.” “Zac and I are still learning a lot about this,” says York. “I don’t want to do the work to think about people as nuanced figures. A lot of people feel conviction; they aren’t speaking out because they’re trying to do the wrong thing.” “It felt really important for us to be home while so much crazy shit was happening.” They were able to add a community dimension to their lives, too – speaking up, marching and working with local organisations. Zac and Hayley both needed to know that I wanted to do this.” “I wanted to explore some deeper parts of myself and figure out why we do this, how it happened,” he says.

At this stage, it seems clear that ‘This Is Why’ is borne out of a frustration with the world, rather than with each other. And yet it has never affected the quality of the music or the central heartfelt message of the remaining members.
