"We're not spot on, but we're fairly close to the area of the leakage," he says. Lund says both the Swedish network and the Danish Seismic Network picked up the explosions on Monday. Lund says he has notified the Swedish armed forces of his findings; they did not immediately respond to NPR's emailed request for comment. It is "very clear from the seismic record that these are blasts," Björn Lund, director of the Swedish National Seismic Network at Uppsala University told NPR in a phone interview. Authorities have halted all shipping in the area around the leaks. German media, quoting unnamed security officials, say it's possible the leaks are a result of an act of sabotage, as it's extremely rare for undersea, concrete-coated steel pipes to break on their own.

All rights reserved](#)

The amount of gas leaking from the Nord Stream 1 pipeline system is less clear, with a pipeline spokesman declining to say how much was left in the system when it was taken offline for maintenance a few weeks ago.

US intelligence this summer warned the German government of a possible attack on gas pipelines in the Baltic, Der Spiegel reported earlier. “We have to ask who has an interest in destroying this infrastructure,” said Kiesewetter, a member of the Bundestag’s committee on foreign affairs. “That requires strong security authorities with the necessary resources and powers.” “We have already reviewed and stepped up our security measures since the start of the war in Ukraine,” said its senior vice-president for system operation, Alfred Skår Hansen. The Latvian foreign minister, Edgars Rinkēvičs, posted to social media that it “seems we enter a new phase of hybrid war”, without naming who he believed was responsible. Seismologists recorded explosions in the Swedish and Danish waters where the pipeline passes the island of Bornholm on Monday morning and evening, suggesting the leaks were deliberate.

There are still plenty of fossil fuels in the world, and plenty of people willing to invest in them, and the lack of investment is more the pandemic than it is the energy transition. You’ve definitely seen perhaps less investments in fossil fuels than you would have otherwise, but I think the lack of investment in fossil fuels we’ve seen in recent years is really more because of the pandemic than it is because of the energy transition. Because Europe is sucking in LNG from all over the world and at high prices, this is actually harming other markets in the world—Asia, for instance, which uses a ton of LNG, and its prices are very high as well. The trick is going to be that Europe generally doesn’t only use stored gas during the winter—it also gets additional ongoing supply, and that’s everything from local European production to liquified natural gas to using fuel switching, like running other kinds of power plants to save the gas for other uses that are more difficult to replace. Gas prices in Europe are now shooting up, I assume as a reaction to further shakeups in the market— Nord Stream 2 is basically a twin to Nord Stream 1, a capacity of gas that Russia could send directly into Germany. Nord Stream 1 has been delivering gas for several years, and has even delivered gas off and on during the crisis. The worst fears of the project’s critics materialized within a matter of days in February, when Russia invaded Ukraine. That could result in countries blocking insurance cover or financing for oil shipments. European leaders have described the demands as blackmail. For the past decade, it has been a key artery carrying Russia’s vast gas supplies to Europe, accounting for about 35% of Europe’s total Russian gas imports last year. But the project was shrouded in controversy from the beginning. Nord Stream 2, the multimillion dollar, 750-mile sister project, was announced a few years later and completed last September. Since then, the Nord Stream pipelines have become a geopolitical football and Europe and Moscow have been locked in a standoff over the supply of gas to the continent. But both still contained gas under pressure. [ leaks in two Russian gas pipelines](https://www.cnn.com/2022/09/27/energy/nord-stream-pipeline-leaks/index.html), Nord Stream 1 and 2, are likely the result of sabotage.
The White House said this week that large leaks in undersea gas pipelines running from Russia to Germany were the result of "apparent sabotage."
"We are supporting European efforts to investigate this. is supporting efforts to investigate and we will continue our work to safeguard Europe's energy security." "We have been in touch with our European partners there about the apparent sabotage of the pipelines," she told reporters. "The U.S. Poland's prime minister called the development "an act of sabotage," and Sweden's acting prime minister said "it is probably a case of sabotage," the Associated Press reported. Soon there may be an attempt to shift blame on to the West (Russia will obviously deny involvement) with talking points about an affront to the rule of law—and demands for financial restitution. For a continent whose families and industry are already reeling from sky-high energy prices (at only the beginning of fall), further increases are yet another cruel blow. The West must not blink, but should be aware that Putin’s gambit may be a harbinger of similar things to come. [The Soviet Union](https://www.unian.info/world/10741080-nord-stream-2-poses-major-threat-to-environment-in-baltic-sea-over-ww2-era-chemical-munitions-experts.html) is thought to have dumped around 40,000 tons of chemical agents, including mustard gas, at a dump site near Bornholm following the war. [Germany, have](https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2022-09-27/nord-stream-probing-pressure-drop-at-second-russian-gas-link) come to this same conclusion. The sabotage is also meant to showcase Russia’s ability to sabotage underwater infrastructure. This latest salvo should be read clearly as another striking example of how Russia continues to utilize every tool at its disposal to damage and pressure the West. The release of gas from the pipelines (which had been filled to maintain pressure but were not currently in active use), has led to ships being advised to stay five nautical miles from the leaks and aircraft at least 3,280 feet above. Aside from the obvious environmental impacts of methane being released at this scale to the atmosphere, (one more example of how Russia couldn’t care less about carbon emissions), the area of the seabed around Bornholm is particularly environmentally sensitive. This emerged as a significant issue during the building of the pipelines. The leaks are in an area of the Baltic Sea just east of Bornholm Island, a strategic Danish outpost. Since that time, a total of three leaks (two in NS1 and one in NS2) across both pipelines have been found.

Sabotaging the pipelines could “show what Russia is capable of,” one US official said. The new Nord Stream 2 pipeline had yet to enter commercial operations. Russia has requested a UN Security Council meeting on the damaged pipeline this week – something the senior US official said is also suspicious. Russia slashed gas supplies to Europe via Nord Stream 1 before suspending flows altogether in August, blaming Western sanctions for causing technical difficulties. US and western intelligence officials Both Denmark and Sweden are investigating, but a site inspection has yet to be done and details on exactly what caused the explosions remains sketchy. A spokesman called the allegation “predictably stupid and absurd.” “The only thing I know there is that we think the water is between 80 and 100 meters [deep] at that location where the pipeline is. They’re quite often testing our awareness – both at sea and in the air.” “Russian activities in the Baltic Sea have increased in recent years. “I think many of our partners have determined or believe it is sabotage. But one senior US official and a US military official both said Russia is still the leading suspect – assuming that the European assessment of deliberate sabotage is borne out – because there are no other plausible suspects with the ability and will to carry out the operation.

It has become clear to European leaders that the leaks in the Nord Stream pipelines that run from Russia to Germany were an act of sabotage.
And Rehder says this single incident has released roughly the equivalent of 10% of Germany's annual methane emissions. So this methane goes into the atmosphere, stays there for on average 10 years, and per molecule has 25 the greenhouse gas potential of CO2. The silver lining here is that no gas was flowing in either of the pipelines. Also, the owners of the pipelines, companies based in Russia and Switzerland, are not headquartered in NATO countries. And Russia says it wants to convene a meeting of the U.N. Video taken by the Danish military shows a half-mile-wide circle of foamy bubbling water as the gas reaches the surface.
