Eagles vs. Commanders score, takeaways: Philadelphia sacks ... (CBSSports.com)

The Philadelphia Eagles defense put up a dominant performance to spoil Carson Wentz's first game against his former team, finishing with nine sacks and six ...

Smith's three catches that were considered 50-50 passes he went up and got -- which was all of them -- to get the Eagles offense on track. The only points the Eagles defense allowed was late in the fourth quarter when the game was out of hand. This magnificent catch by Smith stood and the Eagles got three points. DeVonta Smith had plenty of highlight reel plays that qualify for this list, but his two-yard touchdown catch prior to halftime takes the cake. Ron Rivera tried to challenge the catch (and he would have won it), but Nick Sirianni had the Eagles run up and get the play off before the flag was thrown. For a recap of this game, all the updates and analysis are detailed in the live blog below. Jalen Hurts finished 22 of 35 for 340 yards with three touchdowns and zero interceptions to pace the Eagles, even though most of the damage was done in the first half. Hurts became the third player since 2000 with 250 pass and rush yards in the first half of three straight games. Smith's 156 receiving yards in the first half were the most by an Eagles player since Kevin Curtis in 2007 -- and the second-most in franchise history. Philadelphia had 16 pressures in the win to go with six hurries, preserving the lead as it dominated Washington's offensive line throughout the afternoon. The Eagles scored all 24 of their points in the second quarter, not having to do much in the second half as Washington's offense struggled to make a rally. The nine sacks by Philadelphia are the most by any team in the NFL this season.

Eagles observations: DeVonta Smith dominates, D-line explodes ... (NBC Sports)

DeVonta Smith and Jalen Hurts linked up in a huge way, the defensive line turned the clock back, and the Eagles are rolling through three impressive weeks.

And on Sunday they scored 24 points in the first half before the offense kind of skidded to a halt. The Eagles gained two yards on the play – a pass to Dallas Goedert – and they wound up getting a field goal on the drive. But Commanders coach Ron Rivera was a little slow tossing the challenge flag, and Sirianni knew the only chance the Eagles had for the play to count was to call a play ASAP. Cox had half a sack in Detroit, a full sack against the Vikings and 1 ½ sacks in Washington, and the 3.0 sacks through Week 3 match the best start of his career. Maddox is one of the best slot corners in the league, and his ability to play as physical as he does at that size is incredible. They led the Lions 38-21 after three quarters and hung on after getting outscored 14-0 in the fourth quarter. He’s in complete command of the offense, and he’s shutting up a lot of doubters and haters on a weekly basis. Tons of film, tons of meetings, tons of studying, but keep the guys off their feet and get them as fresh as possible for a road game on a short week. They have two now and a quarterback who knows how to get them the ball. Smith has such a flair for soaring high and coming down with circus catches in traffic, and he’s so quick he’s always a threat to pick up big yards after the catch, which we also saw Sunday. This is the first time since the Super Bowl season the Eagles have held consecutive teams to single digits and only the fourth time since 2009. This is back-to-back masterpieces by the 24-year-old Hurts, and he deserves so much credit for putting in the work to get from the player we saw as a rookie to the one we see today.

chants filled the air, and the Commanders even had a false start penalty that could be attributed to the crowd in their home building. To be able to go out there and say, 'OK, you're doing a good job on the run, let's go pass the football,' Jalen did a great job and we had great playmakers make plays." Wentz, the second pick in the 2016 draft to Philadelphia on his third team in three years, was 25 of 43 for 211 yards with two fumbles - one lost, which set up Goedert's 22-yard catch-and-run touchdown. "When they come, you've got to make the most of them." Coming off a three-TD game with two on the ground, Hurts continued to show he could get the job done with his throwing arm, along with his legs. The 2020 Heisman Trophy winner out of Alabama has responded in a big way since being held without a catch in the season opener.

Eagles dominate Commanders, show they are the class of NFC thanks to high-powered offense ... LANDOVER, Md. — Entering the 2022 season, the Philadelphia Eagles ...

Hurts and Smith connected for a 44-yard gain later in the quarter on a deep ball that left the Eagles on the doorstep in the final the final moments of the first half, with the Eagles leading by 17. The lone score for the Commanders' offense came with 1:55 left and the outcome long decided. The Eagles sacked him nine times – with six of those coming in the first half. Brown, and the Eagles had all the makings of an elite duo at wideout. And he has two of the best in the NFL right now at wide receiver. His third, a 2-yard touchdown, put an exclamation point on the first half as time expired. Brown had a touchdown and 85 yards on five catches. But Smith never touched a second foot down in-bounds; Hurts rushed his unit to the line and snapped the ball before Rivera could throw the challenge flag. A dominant second quarter, in which they scored all 24 points, allowed the Eagles to play the second half on cruise control. Hurts wanted to score before the half, he said, and fourth down arrived. The threat of him taking off makes any play a run-pass option, Commanders coach Ron Rivera said earlier in the week. While the Commanders contained the Philadelphia rushing attack, they had no answer for Hurts' arm.

Eagles vs. Commanders: The good, the bad, and the ugly (Bleeding Green Nation)

The Eagles sacked Wentz a career-high nine times for minus-58 yards and held Washington to 1-for-3 in the red zone. Entering the game, the Commanders had ...

The Eagles going wide to Zach Pascal blowing the fourth-and-one at the Washington 8 with 7:11 left to play in the half. Washington did get a safety on the field flip. Brandon Graham and Haason Reddick combined to take Wentz down a fourth time, giving the Eagles four sacks for minus-28 yards in the first quarter alone. Graham’s strip sack of Wentz on Washington’s fourth drive at the Commanders’ 23. The Eagles’ defense. Sweat took down Wentz for the eighth sack for minus-55 yards. Cox again sacked Wentz for a six-yard loss, and Javon Hargrave entered the sack party on the next play, taking down Wentz for a third time in the first quarter for minus-seven yards. Fuller was right on him, and it was a sharply thrown pass that the tiny Smith outfought Fuller to grab. The Eagles sacked Wentz a career-high nine times for minus-58 yards and held Washington to 1-for-3 in the red zone. It marked the first time the Eagles had four sacks in the first quarter since 1991 when Reggie White, Mike Pitts, Mike Golic and Clyde Simmons struck fear into opposing quarterbacks. Earlier in the game, on the Eagles’ third drive, Smith’s 45-yard over-the-shoulder catch on first-and-10 from the Eagles’ 39 set up Jake Elliott’s 32-yard field goal. The last time the Eagles started 3-0 was in 2016 when they finished 7-9 and out of the playoffs, coincidentally, in Wentz’s rookie season.

Eagles open as touchdown favorites over Doug Pederson's Jaguars (Bleeding Green Nation)

I feel confident about the Eagles winning the game. I feel less confident about the Eagles covering a full seven point spread. While Pederson will have the Jags putting their best foot forward, it still might not be enough to beat the Birds. It was Pederson who took a disproportionate amount of blame for how things went wrong while Wentz was too easily forgiven in the moment. 1 overall pick from the The No.

Jalen Hurts: 'It's just the beginning' (PhiladelphiaEagles.com)

A third consecutive win. This time, against an NFC East rival, led by former Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz, of course. But quarterback Jalen Hurts says it ...

"It's just the beginning," he said. So, it takes a group effort, and together, everyone achieves more." It definitely felt like it felt like a home game, just how loud it was in there, how much green and black was in the stadium," said quarterback Jalen Hurts. He finished the game with 22-of-35 passing and three touchdowns. But quarterback Jalen Hurts says it didn't matter what colors the team he lined up across from wore. The extensive contingent of Eagles fans decked in their Philadelphia garb peppered the Commanders' stands, loudly making their presence unmissable.

'Nine sacks — that's crazy': Eagles defense pummels Carson Wentz ... (The Philadelphia Inquirer)

Wentz had a miserable day going up against his old team, as the defensive line harassed him.

I know the Eagles fans travel well and they showed out and they had a lot to cheer for today.” He did have an offensive line as good as the one that kept Hurts clean for most of Sunday. “He was just like, ‘Now I’ll know what it feels like to hear BG on the other side,’” Graham said of his pregame conversation with Wentz. But there were plenty of howls once he took the field for his first snap. “I mean, that’s the truth.” The Eagles hit him 17 times, forced him to fumble twice — one of which he lost — and had the quarterback seeing ghosts in the secondary. The Eagles want to pressure any quarterback early, but with Wentz, they knew that if Washington got behind, he would hold the ball longer and likely revert to his Superman complex. But he hardly ever had to send more than four against the Commanders. Gannon mixed up his calls and used disguise to keep him from getting a pre-snap bead on where to go at the snap. He completed just 3 of 10 passes for 24 yards and was sacked six times to give Washington a net total of minus-16 yards through the air before the break. But the key to the pressure as the game wore on was in the Eagles’ coverages and taking away Wentz’s first reads. 11 jersey that Carson Wentz exchanged with him, but it might have been better served going to one of the Eagles defensive players who pummeled the Commanders quarterback on Sunday.

Week 3 Eagles grades by position after dominating Commanders (NBC Sports)

Quarterback. Jalen Hurts: 22/35, 340 yards, 3 TDs, 0 INTs · Running back. Miles Sanders: 15 carries, 46 yards · Receiver. DeVonta Smith: 8 catches on 12 targets, ...

Also loved the moment when the Eagles got to the line after a close Smith catch to run a play before Ron Rivera could toss the red flag; they out-coached Rivera in that moment. The Eagles had a good plan on offense and on defense and they dominated in a win. Covey had 5 returns for 34 yards with a long of 12. The Eagles as a team averaged just 2.4 yards per carry. The tight coverage from the back end gave the defensive line plenty of time to sack Wentz when they didn’t get there immediately. Jack Stoll had 1 catch for 4 yards and showed off his ability as a blocker. Smith had a monster game on Sunday but A.J. Brown still had 5 catches for 85 yards and a touchdown. Quez Watkins didn’t have a catch but drew a couple big DPIs and Zach Pascal even added 3 catches for 18 yards. None of the running backs did much in the passing game either. The Eagles didn’t get much going in their running attack against the Commanders, but they didn’t really need it either. Grade: A

Carson Wentz, sacked nine times, and Commanders flail to loss vs ... (The Washington Post)

The Philadelphia Eagles had just completed a first-half shutout with a touchdown catch on the final play when three Washington Commanders fans in Section 412 ...

Brown and the third to DeVonta Smith, who high-pointed a 44-yard pass in double coverage to set up his two-yard touchdown catch on the final play, which began to clear the stands. And although McLaurin finished with six catches for 102 yards, it wasn’t until the third quarter that he was finally targeted. “The sacks and stuff, that’s not on them,” Wentz said. Philadelphia’s scoring was contained to the first half, when Hurts threw all three of his touchdown passes: one to tight end Dallas Goedert, another to wide receiver A.J. Each snap seemed to draw a collective gasp from the hometown fans who stuck around. Terry McLaurin didn’t have a target in that span, the defense allowed three plays of at least 23 yards, and the Commanders went into halftime down 22-0. Washington attempted to run the ball sparingly, with limited success. ... I know the Eagles’ fans travel well, and they showed up and had a lot to cheer for today. In last week’s 36-27 loss at Detroit, Wentz was sacked four times in the first half as the offense struggled to create much of anything. For Washington, the blame was shared. Benjamin St-Juste, a second-year cornerback who worked primarily in the slot during the first two games, shifted outside because William Jackson III was inactive with a back injury. He was sacked nine times, topping his career high of eight [in the 2020 season opener](https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/2020/09/13/washington-football-team-philadelphia-eagles/?itid=lk_inline_manual_10) at FedEx Field, when he was with the Eagles and the team he suited up for Sunday was known as the Washington Football Team.

Commanders Vs. Eagles - Studs and Duds (Hogs Haven)

Some games are competitive and fun to watch regardless of the result. This was not one of them! This was a beat-down in every sense of the word.

The Outside Pass Rush - I turn on games all over the league and I watch guys generate pressure off the edge, get sacks and forced fumbles. He has to get rid of the football faster! Carson Wentz - I get it...I GET IT - he didn’t have time to even set his feet most of the game. He was credited with three passes defended on the afternoon - one in the endzone. The ENTIRE Offensive Line - What an embarrassment this unit was. We all complained this offseason while we watched teams like the Eagles go out and make moves in free agency to improve their squads.
