NFL round-up: Miami Dolphins beat Buffalo Bills despite blocking ... (The Guardian)

The Dolphins' defense stopped the Bills at the goalline late, then held again after punter Thomas Morstead bizarrely kicked the ball off a teammate.

Khalil Herbert ran for a career-high 157 yards and two touchdowns for Chicago. Jameis Winston, playing with an injured back, completed 25 of 41 passes for 353 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions. Miami took the lead with about 10 minutes left in the game, scoring a touchdown to go up 21-17, and the Bills faced their first deficit of the season. Mayfield threw for 170 yards and Christian McCaffrey ran for 108 as the Panthers (1-2) won at home for the first time since beating the Saints 26-7 on 19 September 2021. New England’s Mac Jones suffered a leg injury with less than two minutes to play, hopping off the field and heading straight to the locker room. Matt Amendola missed an extra point in the first half and a 34-yard field goal with 8:38 remaining.

Buffalo Bills can't overcome injuries and mistakes, fall to Dolphins 21 ... (amNY)

Miami Dolphins defensive end Emmanuel Ogbah (91) grabs Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen (17) during the second half of an NFL football game, Sunday, ...

But at the end of the day, the season is not made or broken on one game in September. [Josh Allen bounced a potential touchdown pass to McKenzie late in the fourth quarter](https://twitter.com/houtz/status/1574127414485164035). “We’ll learn from this tomorrow, take it on the chin, and prepare for next week. The effort was there. Then, in the fourth quarter, [Van Roten was injured and replaced by Greg Mancz](https://twitter.com/MattParrino/status/1574123221393235974) who was, as had become the trend, signed off of the practice squad earlier in the week. He continuously guided the offense on 10+ play drives while players on both teams were cramping and limping off of the field around him. Even Allen himself had to get x-rays on his hand after the game; although, the quarterback swears he’s “fine.” Diggs could barely run on the Bills’ final drive as they were marching to attempt a game-winning field goal. Despite coming into the game down six defensive starters and then losing starting cornerback Christian Benford, who has been starting this year in place of Pro Bowl corner Tre’Davious White, to a hand injury, the defense rose to the challenge. Still, the defense is to be commended for their effort. Yet, the team still held Tua Tagovailoa to 186 yards and one touchdown. But the Bills simply couldn’t get out of their own way, ultimately losing 21-19.

I was also trying to get yards," McKenzie said. "We've got to finish drives," Allen said. "He wants to win every situation. I've got no loss in faith in him and what he's able to do and his capabilities in this game." I tried to get out of bounds. They came out and did what they had to do. If I could take it back, I would probably just go up field, get down, put it on the hash myself and live to fight another down." Allen also slammed his helmet to the ground in frustration after [the 21-19 loss](/nfl/boxscore/_/gameId/401437738).

Frustrating day for Buffalo Bills players and coaches fighting heat ... (Palm Beach Post)

The Bills ran 49 more offensive plays than the Dolphins and gained 285 more total yards, but still lost on a sweltering late-September afternoon.

“It’s super encouraging as a teammate to see guys who’re coming off the bench, playing positions they’ve never played, giving us their best effort. This is a team full of dogs,” defensive end Gregory Rousseau said of his teammates. “It’s really frustrating,” McKenzie added. “To be honest, it was tough from the start,” Dawkins said. In the third quarter, they had a 20-play, 87-yard drive that spanned 9:22, but it resulted in only a field goal. You can do your best to prepare for it all week, drink as much water and Gatorade, this and that, but it’s different when you’re in game time and your adrenaline starts going.” "They had a really good game plan. But it was cooking.” “I was, like, ‘Man, I thought I was used to this. By its end, they’d lost more to injury and/or illness from heat. Cramping up, throwing up, whatever happened, we fought through it.” Here's five takeaways from the win](https://www.palmbeachpost.com/story/sports/nfl/2022/09/25/miami-dolphins-takeaways-buffalo-bills-nfl-week-3/8066128001/)

Report card: Bills lose 21-19 vs. Dolphins (Bills Wire)

Allen once again put the team on his back. With the team struggling to finish drives, Allen took control. He attempted 63 passes and completed 42 passes for ...

The consistency of the unit getting in the backfield was lacking. Tremaine Edmunds and Matt Milano did a great job at plugging holes and attempting to help in the pass defense game. Jaylen Waddle got between the safeties for a 45-yard pass. The unit clearly struggled without Mitch Morse in the middle of the line. Allen helped bail out the unit quite a bit by moving in the pocket. On the flip side, the group was strong against the run, allowing only 41 yards and 17 carries. However, the unit was strong catching the ball out of the backfield. The entire right side of the offensive line, Spencer Brown and Ryan Bates, left due to injuries–Some involving Meanwhile, the tight end duo of Dawon Knox and Quintin Morris added six catches for 47 receiving yards. The unit, while putting up solid numbers, did not break out in the manner that we are accustomed to seeing. Unfortunately, Allen couldn’t get the team over the hill with one more score. With the team struggling to finish drives, Allen took control.
