Deadly Hurricane Fiona has strengthened into a Category 4 storm as it barrels toward Canada's Atlantic coast, according to the National Hurricane Center.
Temperatures remained in the 80s and 90s on Friday, according to CNN meteorologist Taylor Ward. It’s on track to be an “extreme weather event” in eastern Canada, threatening powerful winds, dangerous storm surge and about two months’ worth of rainfall, forecasters with the Canadian Hurricane Centre warned Friday afternoon. “Impacts are projected to be felt across the province. Residents should brace for damaging winds, high waves, coastal storm surge and heavy rainfall, which may lead to prolonged power outages, Lohr said. We have God, and the hope help will come.” “This is a normal process. Hurricane Sandy affected 24 states and all of the eastern seaboard, causing an estimated $78.7 billion in damage. … We don’t have anything. Prince Edward Island and Isle-de-la-Madeleine are also under warnings. “We are taking every precaution and will be ready to respond to Hurricane Fiona as safely and efficiently as possible,” Sean Borden, the storm lead coordinator for Nova Scotia Power, said in the release. ET advisory the storm weakened slightly but still whipped powerful, hurricane-force winds extending more than 100 miles out from its center and even stronger gusts. Its center was about 370 miles south-southeast of Halifax.

A hurricane warning was in effect for most of central and eastern Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland, provinces on the east coast of Canada. "They're hit bad and I'm not sure what they'll do." The country's two largest carriers, Air Canada and WestJet Airlines, are suspending regional service starting Friday evening. National Hurricane Center said. "It's been a long night but there are no reports of injuries or fatalities," Pitcher said. Still, gusts reached as high as 103 miles per hour (166 kph), the Bermuda Weather Service said in a bulletin.

Much more concerning is the predicted west-to-east breadth of hurricane-force sustained winds of at least 74 mph (around 170 miles) and tropical-storm-force sustained winds of at least 39 mph (around 680 miles). A significant storm surge is likely near and just east of the landfall point, especially if landfall coincides with the Saturday-morning high tide. The storm will be slowing down near the time of landfall, which will intensify the rain and wind impacts. Beginning on Sunday morning, when TD 9 will be south of Jamaica, NHC predicted TD 9 to go from a tropical storm with 50 mph winds to a category 1 hurricane with 85 mph winds in 24 hours. As with Sandy, the impacts of Fiona will be essentially those of a hurricane, even if the formal classification changes in the hours before landfall, which is why Environment Canada has gone with hurricane warnings. EDT Friday](https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/text/refresh/MIATCPAT2+shtml/231147.shtml), Hurricane Fiona was charging northeast at 35 mph with top sustained winds of 130 mph, about 250 miles north of Bermuda, according to the National Hurricane Center (NHC). The threat to Florida is more murky, with most of the peninsula south of the Panhandle in the NHC 5-day cone of uncertainty. NHC currently has TD 9 topping out as a category 3 hurricane with 115 mph winds on Wednesday morning near the coast of southwestern Florida, but this forecast should be regarded as highly uncertain. In addition, TD 9 may be hampered at that time by an increase in wind shear, as an upper-level low to the west of Cuba brings a southerly flow of upper-level winds over the storm. [Satellite imagery](https://www.tropicaltidbits.com/sat/satlooper.php?region=98L&product=vis) and [Curacao radar](https://www.meteo.cw/rad_loop_ppi.php?Lang=Eng&St=TNCC&Sws=R11) on Friday afternoon showed TD 9 bringing heavy rain showers to the ABC Islands and to the north coast of South America, but struggling with high wind shear: The low-level center was exposed to view, and the system’s relatively scanty heavy thunderstorms were confined to the southwest side of the center. While TD 9 was experiencing hostile wind shear that was limiting it on Friday afternoon, it is expected to rapidly intensify into a hurricane this weekend, and will affect Jamaica, the Cayman Islands, Cuba, and Florida over the next five days. Continued high wind shear from Fiona’s upper-level outflow is expected to impede development of TD 9 through Saturday morning, and its close proximity to the coast of South America may also hinder it.

[National Hurricane Center](https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/) said the system is expected to hit Cuba early next week as a hurricane and then Florida on Wednesday. Ron DeSantis](https://twitter.com/GovRonDeSantis/status/1573303768346763265) tweeted Friday that "while the eventual track of TD9 is uncertain, Floridians should remain vigilant and ensure their households are prepared for a potential impact." The system will almost certainly be named Ian, which is the next name on the list of storm names that's been established by the World Meteorological Organization. Tropical Storm Hermine (pronounced Her-MEEN) formed Friday afternoon off the coast of Africa, so that name has been taken. DeSantis declared a pre-landfall state of emergency late Friday afternoon for 24 counties that are at risk of being struck, AccuWeather reported. It becomes a hurricane once its winds reach 74 mph.
Meteorologists are warning that Fiona has the potential to be one of the most severe storms in the country's history.
Pedro Pierluisi of Puerto Rico activated the National Guard to help distribute diesel fuel to hospitals and supermarkets. President Joe Biden to say Thursday that the full force of the federal government is ready to help the U.S. Authorities in Nova Scotia sent an emergency alert to phones warning of Fiona’s arrival and urging people to say inside, avoid the shore, charge devices and have enough supplies for at least 72 hours. It had maximum sustained winds of 40 mph and was moving west-northwest at 12 mph. In the meantime, we encourage everyone to stay safe and to listen to the instructions of local authorities and hang in there for the next 24 hours.” “This is definitely going to be one of, if not the most powerful, tropical cyclones to affect our part of the country,” said Ian Hubbard, meteorologist for the Canadian Hurricane Centre in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. There’s something coming, and just how bad is yet to be determined,” said David, wearing his outdoor waterproof gear. Fiona was a Category 4 hurricane when it pounded Bermuda with heavy rains and winds earlier Friday as it swept by the island on a route heading for northeastern Canada. Residents in those regions should be prepared to move out if needed,” the alert read. National Hurricane Center said Fiona should reach the area as a “large and powerful post-tropical cyclone with hurricane-force winds.” The Canadian Hurricane Centre issued a hurricane watch over extensive coastal expanses of Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland. And we will be there for that.

In reference to basic services, it indicates that 100 percent of the electric transmission lines have been recovered; 70.33 percent of the electric service has been recovered; 28 percent of the aqueducts have been recovered and 38 percent of the affected users have had their water service reestablished. Regarding displacements, the report indicates that 92 percent of the shelters have been closed and 72 percent of the people mobilized have returned to their homes. Although the hurricane has passed, the storm’s effects still prevail in Dominican territory.
Storm surges and heavy rainfall expected before weather event gradually weakens this weekend, say meteorologists.

The Canadian Hurricane Center warned Friday of a "severe event" for Atlantic Canada and eastern Quebec.
[wrote Friday](https://weather.gc.ca/hurricane/statements_e.html). Fiona, which brought devastating flooding to Puerto Rico and cut power to the entire island, is the latest marker of an Atlantic hurricane season that started slow but has suddenly turned active. And the blackouts could be lasting, as crews will wait for winds to calm before they safely begin repairs, said Dave Pickles, the utility’s chief operating officer. More than 40% of the population in Nova Scotia is affected by power outages, [according to utility company Nova Scotia power](http://outagemap.nspower.ca/external/default.html). The center also predicted a considerable ocean surge, or storm-driven rise in water above normally dry land, causing coastal flooding. Tropical storm warnings extend from New Brunswick to eastern Quebec to northern Newfoundland, where rainfall could reach 5 inches and winds at least 39 mph.
Tropical Storm Ian formed out of the disturbance we have been following in the Caribbean Sea.
This is a time to know what you're going to do tomorrow and Monday if the storm is forecast to come your way. And how strong is the dip in the jet stream going to be that will try to scoop it up, to one degree or the other? Everybody there should stay in close touch with local officials as they navigate the difficult decisions that have to be made. The environmental pattern will steadily become more conducive for the system to organize and strengthen today, but Sunday and Monday pattern is forecast to be extremely supportive of hurricane development. It was only a Category 1 in Miami-Dade and a Category 2 in parts of Broward and Palm Beach Counties. Ian would be more inclined to go that way if the jet stream dip doesn't pick it up. Where and how strong is the storm going to be Sunday into Monday? If the storm tracks farther north, it will get there beyond the cone's time frame. Models that show the jet-stream dip extending far into the Gulf show the storm being pulled north and quickly arcing toward Florida. Between today and Monday, the storm will be moving across the Caribbean toward western Cuba. We also will, hopefully, see predictions for the dip in the jet stream more consistently simulated by the various computer forecast models. Tropical Storm Ian formed out of the disturbance we have been following in the Caribbean Sea.
