(Who am I kidding — there is no such thing as bad trombone playing in the world of Trombone Champ. Luckily, the game is way more fun when you don’t really play it well, as the trombone plays its dulcet toot-toots in accordance with whichever notes you’re playing. You use a mouse to slide the pitch up or down; you have to hit the pitch box precisely, then either hold down the button on your mouse or a key from your keyboard for the right amount of time. If you’ve played Guitar Hero or Rock Band games before, then you know how challenging musical instrument rhythm games can be.

The mangled (read: beautiful, dulcet) tones from Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony is what made this an instant buy for me and, if you’ve got $15 and a PC with which to play games on, should for you as well. I bought the Trombone game and played Take Me Out to the Ballgame. I tooted the heck outta Take Me Out to the Ball Game, earning a ‘B’ rating on my first try.

Stop What You're Doing And Play Trombone Champ Immediately (TheGamer)

All I want to do is play the game, but I have to write this and work for a living. I personally favour the chaos of 100 percent scroll speed, but I did indeed get an A and enter the colourful champ mode when I knocked it down to 60 percent. During this song, I managed to hit a couple of perfect notes - I must be a virtuoso - and the screen shook as a baseball smashed into it. As I prepared my lips for a rendition of Take Me Out To The Ball Game that would go down in history as one of the greatest, the loading screen told me the uncomfortable fact that two to four spiders - on average - live inside a trombone. The game starts with a warm-up, but I only managed a B on my first try - a rating I actually think was very generous. All of them pale in comparison to the marvel that is Trombone Champ.

This allows you to easily key out the background and make funny videos!— Holy Wow (🎺TROMBONE CHAMP AVAILABLE NOW!) (@HolyWowStudios) I aced the warm-up which consisted of some basic scales and arpeggios, but other than that I've struggled to get past a B rating on the tracks I have tried. You can sell duplicates of cards for turds. Trombone Champ also doesn't stay within the confines of the usual chromatic scale we're used to hearing in music, so you get to experience all the awful off-key tones you reach. You earn toots for playing tracks, which are then used to buy sacks. Mix that in with the horribly flat notes you can produce and the Mii-esque tromboners and well, you've got a pitch perfect game. If there's two unconnected, successive notes that are quite far away from each other in terms of height, you can leave the key pressed down and slide the cursor to it. Trombones can slide very smoothly through notes, and you can also do that here if you like. I've played piano since I was a kid and even studied some at university, but my efforts have been... Yes, there's a breath meter to contend with too. Trombone Champ aims to emulate every part of playing a trombone.

Trombone Champ is a new game that's exactly what it sounds like ... (For The Win)

The new trombone playing game like Guitar Hero is amazing.

Here’s the reason we’re here: Players of the game have started posting videos of their performances, and it’s a meme waiting to happen, with slide-y, pitchy, off-key versions of songs we know are all over the place. I haven’t tried it yet, but I definitely will, because the challenge is to slide over to the right notes using your mouse. It’s time for you to become a trombone champ by playing …

The Internet Is Obsessed With the Absurdity of This Trombone ... (The Mary Sue)

Trombone Champ is taking over social media with videos of its delightfully absurd gameplay. The horrendous performances are an absolute joy to behold.

Everything is excellent, and for PC Gamer to throw their weight behind this game during the same year that saw The rankings ranging from “Perfecto!” to the aforementioned “Nasty!” The curtains, the baboons, the card-collection of famous trombone players, which include (thank god) Melba Liston. Apparently, this same video was shared within the PC Gamer Slack channel, where numerous coworkers instantly purchased the game for themselves.

"[A]t the moment, Holy Wow is mostly a one person operation. "I was also concerned that real trombonists would complain about how unrealistic the trombone controls are -- it plays more like a slide whistle than a trombone." The game was released last week on Steam for PC ($14.99), with a Mac version expected soon. The game itself is remarkably straightforward: slide the mouse up and down to very quickly to adjust the pitch while holding down a button for the right length of time to play along with music. ("Did you know that early trombones from the Renaissance and Baroque eras are sometimes called 'sackbuts?'") "I thought it would take around six months, but the entire start-to-finish process took four years (with lots of starts and stops)."
