Big Sky showrunner Elwood Reid sets up Season 3 and the show's two new season regulars, and why he's not pushing Cassie or Jenny to hook up with Jensen ...

It's not realistic, and it's not the kind of storytelling I think we need to be doing in this day and age. When we open up the first episode of the season, what we learn is that he's gotten to have a "relationship" with Cassie—and I use the term in quotations because I don't want you to take it in a romantic connotation. Cassie has had a lot of tragedy in her life, and we're gonna learn that she and Beau have had some shared tragedy. Beau seems to click with both Jenny and Cassie, so a lot of viewers would be quick to suspect that there is another love triangle brewing. But she's somebody he can confide in and talk to about the state of his marriage and his daughter—his estranged daughter who is living with a man that his ex-wife remarried. I just assumed, after that movie, people will be using her in movies and TV shows for the rest of her career, and she kind of went back into her music career a little bit and popped up here and there and did the Reba show, of course, and some Hallmark shows and stuff like that. I don't want to use the term bickering, but they have a fun back-and-forth professionally, in the workplace. I grew up with Reba's music, and it meant a lot to me, so whenever you meet an icon like that or someone you admire, I was really, really nervous about Reba's quote-unquote "brand" out there in the world. I knew her as a country music star, and just to see her in that, I was like, "Oh my God." And there was dead silence, and I was worried she was going to protect her brand. And for [Beau], I think it's no secret, and we talk about it in a few episodes: He's still in love with his ex-wife. TV Guide spoke with showrunner Elwood Reid about the introduction of McEntire's colorful character, the personal events that led to Beau's arrival in Montana, ...

I just have to look at the schedule and see if I can bring him back. I wanted her to go off and do those big opportunities, and I don't know if I'll ever get her back. It's so funny because I get to walk around the set and say to everybody, "You guys have watched the show, right? I think the audience and the actors will know and call bullshit on me. And as those things go, the play kept getting bumped and rolled, and at that time, I didn't even have a season three pick-up, and we didn't even know, if we did get a pick-up, when we'd be back in production. And it's three in the morning, and she's jumping into a pit of dead animals, and I'm like, "Okay, we can have a stunt person just capture that [shot]." What's fun about writing her is, she's the [kind of character] that's gonna go jump off of a building and karate kick someone in the face, she's gonna jump into places with guns. Elwood Reid: I think there's a little bit of this in all of us—there's a parent who will do anything to protect her family, to protect the people she loves. In the premiere, Jenny goes to examine an apartment without any back-up—and Beau calls her out for making that call. I don't want her to go, "Oh yeah, I know where I'm going." I think, with a character like that, it's really easy to go over the top. There's a real us-versus-them attitude, so when someone comes at her family, she circles the wagons and does anything in her power to protect them.

Jensen Ackles played the Sheriff in the second season but will now be full-time. A new cast member, Rosanna Arquette, joins the show as Jenny's cheating mother.
