Hulu pins down the first trailer for its new Hellraiser (The A.V. Club)

Earlier this year, Hulu released Prey, a surprisingly good prequel/reboot of the Predator series. Next, the streaming service is hoping lightning can strike ...

Hellraiser, which also stars Odessa A’Zion and was directed by David Bruckner of The Night House and the “Amateur Night” segment from V/H/S (that’s the one where the dudes are killed by a demon lady), will be available on Hulu on October 7. (That’s not a criticism, just an observation, since it’s not like Prey was a dramatic departure from the standard beats of a Predator story.) Next, the streaming service is hoping lightning can strike twice with a similar straight-to-Hulu reboot of [Hellraiser](https://www.avclub.com/film/reviews/hellraiser-2022) starring Jamie Clayton as Pinhead, and while it’s too early to say if Hellraiser will be as well-received as Prey (which rules, by the way), the film’s first trailer certainly makes a solid case for this being a Hellraiser-ass Hellraiser movie.

'Hellraiser' Reboot Gets A Heavenly Trailer (With A New Pinhead) (Forbes)

In one of the skewed ironies of corporate consolidation, we just got a new trailer for the upcoming Hellraiser reboot courtesy of... Walt Disney.

Pardon the broken record; you don’t have to respond to these folks or give them a ‘both sides’ seat at the debate table. I will be amused to watch the perpetually online trolls argue that going with a transgender actress for Pinhead now qualifies the movie as ‘woke’ or pandering. The first four films earned $48 million worldwide on a combined $14 million budget. This Hellraiser looks like a mix of the small-scale original (basically about an adulterous woman who lures men back home to kill them and thus slowly bring her dead lover back to life) and the visually astonishing Hellbound. While I’ll always support such a roll of the dice, the Hellraiser series has always been a cult property. The first film is mostly a small-scale family melodrama with supernatural horrors existing as the motivation and/or on the fringes.

'Hellraiser' – The Original Electronic Score for Clive Barker's Horror ... (Bloody Disgusting)

Christopher Young's brilliant Hellraiser score is nearly as synonymous with the film as Pinhead — but if writer-director Clive Baker had his way, ...

Hellraiser editor Tony Randel reportedly suggested Young — who had already cut his teeth on the likes of A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy’s Revenge and Tobe Hooper’s Invaders from Mars — as a replacement. Barker met with the band to discuss the soundtrack, citing Wayne Bell and Tobe Hooper’s The Texas Chain Saw Massacre and Pino Donaggio’s Carrie scores as points of reference. The band was working on cues for the film when they received word that the producers at New World Pictures had rejected their music. Barker was quoted as saying that Coil is “the only group I’ve heard on disc whose records I’ve taken off because they made my bowels churn.” That’s high praise coming from the master of the macabre. Pino Donaggio wrote the music to Carrie and it’s got a very romantic quality; very beautiful and melodic and melancholic,” Thrower recalled in a 2017 interview with The Quietus. When Barker happened into the store, Thrower mentioned that he was a fan of his Books of Blood, and the two hit it off.

Hellraiser Director David Bruckner on How He Approached ... (Gizmodo)

The 11th Hellraiser movie, simply titled Hellraiser, hits Hulu on October 7.

My suggestion to fans is to go into it not thinking exactly where it’s fitting in the history of the series and to just experience the film. So [we were] holding that in as high regard as we can, but also—and this is something that we all talked about as a team, and I think everybody was on board for—it was like we also have a responsibility to just lose ourselves in this and allow it to take us in different directions if we’re so compelled, and to be true to the story that we’re telling.” “If it was up to me, we’d put the year on it when we discuss it, because I think we all kind of know where it situates. I also think that it fits within the world of Hellraiser and what you’ve seen before in many ways. The 1987 film, adapted by Clive Barker from his novella "The Hellbound Heart," and its subsequent sequels posit the great Doug Bradley as the legendary cenobite ...

If the story is strong, the movie will work [...] That's why 'Hellraiser has succeeded; not because the Cenobites are gloriously f***ed up." Hellraiser's Director and New Pinhead on What Makes the Hulu Film ... (Gizmodo)

David Bruckner and Jamie Clayton talk to io9 about the Clive Barker-produced horror reboot.

I liked to say we sort of chased the sick giggle, the side of us that feels like we’re getting away with something, and then also allow ourselves to experience a bit of awe in horror, and to be smaller than the material in some ways. And I feel like if you’re doing anything in a horror film, you’re out on a crazy limb—you’ve got prosthetic monsters, you’re usually battling the elements, and when you’re there on the ground, there’s always the peril that none of it may work. But I don’t think that that challenges the experience in any way that that we can’t get behind. Bruckner: I don’t know anything about it, but I wish them the best. We just found it, and we found levels in it, and expression and tone, the disappointment or the sensuality. There are some bits that are painted to get rid of seams, but that’s all me in all of that. So we wanted to find something that hit the notes that fans would like—but also allowed itself to do new things for new audiences and look at this as a gateway for people to the older movies. It’s a reflection of the inner dilemma of the characters. The voice was interesting because I had done a voice when I taped my audition, and I was just having fun with something. This was always a new story and that sometimes carries you in different places, and you have to follow your inspirations where that’s concerned. The spirit of Hellraiser is one that I think embraces invention and advance of design and is always willing to go [to] some crazy places. David Bruckner: Being a Hellraiser fan myself, it’s pretty easy to instantly want to resurrect everything that you love about the original movies, and you can’t get it all into one film.

'Greater delights await' in trailer of Hulu's 'Hellraiser' reboot (Los Angeles Times)

The “Hellraiser” trailer’s release comes amid a slew of upcoming horror films and series in advance of Halloween. Although the reboot promises to breathe new life into the classic franchise, it will also lean heavily on the original source material, Barker’s 1986 novel, “The Hellbound Heart.” Barker is also behind the “Candyman” horror series. Then, as the reimagined icon comes into focus with her dark, piercing, computer-generated eyes, Clayton’s character offers a chilling, parting line — “What is it you pray for?” — as chains whip forward and grab another screaming victim. Riley is a young woman who is “struggling with addiction and compulsive behavior, that comes in contact accidentally with the box and unfortunately begins to dabble with it,” director David Bruckner told But Jamie Clayton, known for starring in the Wachowski siblings’ Netflix original series “Sense8,” landed the role. The ideas of pain and pleasure are woven deeply in the franchise, Barker said.

So, I raise my glass to you and invite you to join me in the toast. Though the term Pre-Code is generally used to describe sound films made in Hollywood between 1930 and 1934, this is something of a misnomer. Both share much of the same talent both in front of and behind the camera as well as similarities in tone and character. Between the establishment of the Code and the beginning of its enforcement under Joseph Breen in June of 1934, filmmakers would often purposefully include elements that defied the code. Rennahan was a key figure in the Process 2 Technicolor process as he filmed several successful tests as it was being developed and shot several films with it. The decision to lean into the comedy perhaps works in this case simply because of the odd intricacies and absurdities of the plot, which all add up to a very fun and entertaining, if not particularly scary film. The frames exposed in green were then printed onto one strip of black and white film and the red onto another with the two strips of film glued together back-to-back and a dye transfer technique used for the final version. He made one other horror film in addition to these two, The Walking Dead (1936), an underrated gem starring Boris Karloff as a wrongly-executed prisoner who is raised from the dead by a scientist. They are the first horror films made in color and examples of early horror-comedies. It is true that the black and white versions of Doctor X (1932) and Mystery of the Wax Museum (1933) remained in circulation in various forms for much of that time, but the original Process 2 Technicolor versions were thought to be gone forever or at least damaged beyond repair.
