'Quantum Leap' Revival Gives Iconic Premise a New Lease on Life ... (Variety)

The high-concept hook of 'Quantum Leap' — minus Scott Bakula — is no less potent now than during the show's heyday.

The story in the pilot (the only episode screened for critics) is diverting enough for an episode with a lot of heavy lifting to do. Addison gets put to the test in the pilot, which finds Ben inhabiting the body of a henchman in over his head in 1985. (The original series ended with an anti-climactic intertitle informing the audience that Sam never made it home after all.) Ben and his team have restarted the program, in part with the mission to finally bring Sam back after decades of Forest Gumping his way through history. Beckett can indeed hurl himself to and fro about the space-time continuum, but each “leap” plops him into the consciousness of a random person facing a consequential challenge. “Leap” remains a solid, if esoteric nerd culture reference, but try mentioning “Sam Beckett” in conversation and expect a hard left into existentialist theater. To prove his concept and save the project, Beckett tests the technology on himself to spectacular, if inconvenient results.

But now, his backstory will be slowly revealed over the course of the first season, a creative decision that Lee thinks will ultimately make the character — and his story — more accessible to a wider audience in the long run. So it’s a soft opening into this person who has a very sordid past, and I think it was very smart of them to withhold that. Representation “does so much for not only this industry, but every industry — for anybody to see themselves being represented in a position of leadership and [as] a person who is actively going out and doing good and saving lives,” he said. “I’ve always considered the way I look and my background to be a superpower,” said Lee, who is Korean American. “The greatest thing about the show is that it’s almost like a different TV show every week, but it needs that consistency,” Gero said. “But lo and behold, it presented itself, and I was like, ‘I have to take this swing.’ This is the role I’ve been waiting for.”

Raymond Lee hurtles through time as new 'Quantum Leap' traveler ... (USA TODAY)

Raymond Lee is Dr. Ben Song in "Quantum Leap," stepping into time travel and a new series for Scott Bakula's Dr.Sam Beckett. And there's a big twist.

"I got my sleeve caught on the lock-knob thing, It's one of those things you can't prepare for. "Each week is like a whole new movie." "With this show, you really have to be on your toes." "This is about evolution. It's just a question of when and if he wants to engage. Beckett even appears briefly in hologram form in the new series' first episode. We're continuing in the same world, but we're telling our own story that will absolutely brush up against the previous show." In the first season, Song will time vault into a jewel heist getaway driver in 1985, a space shuttle astronaut in the 1980s and into a woman's body (in next month's fourth episode). (or Al, for that matter.) Well,I guess we're about to find out." He doesn't inherit the skills of the body he inhabits. Sam Beckett, who involuntarily vaulted through space and time, taking the place of seemingly random people to correct past mistakes. Ben Song is not your normal physicist,” Lee explains on a filming break.

The New Quantum Leap Pays Faithful Homage to the Original (Gizmodo)

Addison (Caitlin Bassett) and Ben (Raymond Lee) brace for impact. Photo: Ron Batzdorff/NBC. It's been nearly 30 years since Scott Bakula's Dr. Sam Beckett ...

It remains to be seen if Quantum Leap will put its emphasis on Ben’s do-gooding travels through time, like the original series did, or if it will continue to divide its attention between past and present—though given the ensemble cast, especially with a star like Ernie Hudson in a key role, that does seem likely. With Ziggy’s help, Ben and Addison are able to piece together what’s going down; it involves a big explosion and the Hope Diamond, but—like the intricacies of the time-travel tech that got Ben there in the first place—the crime is really a MacGuffin. While there’s already a lot going on with Ben’s problem-solving plotline, Quantum Leap makes it obvious that the reason why he jumped before the machine was ready is going to become an important mystery. It’s not yet apparent if Ben’s own journey will be quite so surprising, or whether it will pinball wildly between personas that offer the show a chance to dabble in both social commentary and outright goofballery. Taken as a whole, it would be a lot to absorb, especially if you weren’t already familiar with the classic series. We won’t spoil Ben’s first mission, but we will note that as far as leaps go, it’s a pretty easy one for him: Nick is around Ben’s age and seems to be a bit of a lone wolf, and a city circa 1985 isn’t too jarring of a setting. Going by this first episode, the new series will keep to the original show’s general take that fixing a wrong in the past can actually improve the future. He wasn’t totally alone—he had Al, a hologram who only Sam could see and hear, and who’d show up with his handheld gizmo that connected them to Ziggy’s vast repositories of historical knowledge—but he didn’t know how he was ever going to make it back home. Naturally, this seemingly idiotic decision freaks everyone out, including Ben himself, who pops up in July 1985 with amnesia (a side effect of leaping), something that Addison—who’s able to follow him through time as a hologram, just like Al followed Sam—helps him cope with, though she doesn’t explain her personal relationship with him (she does, however, inform him that she was supposed to be the one doing the time-traveling). [the late Dean Stockwell](https://gizmodo.com/rip-dean-stockwell-quantum-leaps-beloved-al-1848022924), to whom the premiere episode is dedicated), both get referenced by the new characters, and the reliably unreliable supercomputer that powers the show’s sci-fi tech is still named Ziggy. Fans of the original series will recall episodes opened with a spoken intro explaining its concept as well as a title sequence showing scenes from Sam’s adventures—plus, Sam was given voice-overs to further explain how he was feeling (usually perplexed) as he tried to figure out a) who he had “leaped” into, b) where and when he was, and c) who he was supposed to help in that particular time period, which would trigger his next jaunt through space and time. Sam Beckett vanished into time (and from the airwaves), but Quantum Leap—a popular show during its five-season run—has since maintained a cult following.

Actor Raymond Lee says that he's 'checking off a bucket list [item] with every episode.' He's talking about his work on the new series Quantum Leap.

The humor was a big part of the original Quantum Leap and It’s a really important part of this one. “Deborah Pratt, one of the original creators and executive producers of the show [is] with us every day. In modernizing the series, Gero notes that it felt like the right time to add a serialized element to the narrative. But, there's an enormous amount of people [who] are [only] vaguely familiar with the title and are just going to check the show out clean, and we didn't want to weigh the show down with a lot of mythology immediately that would make it feel like, ‘oh, I need to watch 90‑plus episodes of [the original] before I can start this.’” Expanding on this, he adds, “We want all of the rabid fans of Quantum Leap to watch the show and have it feel like Quantum Leap. Lee plays Song, and with the series time-traveling, location hopping narrative, he says, “It's an actor's dream to not only be in different periods with different projects but to do it all in one.

Quantum Leap Episode 1 Review: July 13th, 1985 (Den of Geek)

In its first exposition-heavy episode, the Quantum Leap continuation lacks the charm of the original.

Somehow Janice has convinced Ben that his jump is imperative and world-saving, even though he is not the team member who is slated to do the jumping. What was in the crate? Magic reports that Janice desperately wanted to be a part of the Quantum Leap project revival but was prevented from doing so because her connection was too emotional. Her face can’t be seen, but a ring on her finger is clear enough that team leader Herbert “Magic” Williams (Ernie Hudson) recognizes it as a military service ring and quickly deduces that it must be Janice. The scene is set with a love story. The much-awaited sequel to the three-decades-old original series spent much of its first hour acclimating newbies to the time-traveling world of “putting right once went wrong” while keeping viewers hooked with a few fast-paced surprises and more than a few curiosities.

I just have my brain and feelings, so if I leap into the body of a woman, I have to imbue the person with that, and imbue Ben Song as well. You wanna shade them with the person, but you don’t wanna play a version of them that feels fake or big, or also tips away to somebody that I might not be this person, although they would never assume that somebody else is possessing them. I have to trust that what we’re creating something completely new, but that has enough there, tonally and spiritually, to honor the original. I’ve taken from them, and I’ve put that and infused that into the way that I like to work and the kind of set that I like to set the environment for, to create. How has this experience affected your own approach and your own process for finding a character, when it’s a character that is also someone else and somewhere else all the time? If anything, I’m the new person in their world, and I like to treat it like that. We have really taken it upon ourselves, individually, everyone in the cast and crew, to welcome them with open arms, so that they can do their best work in creating the atmosphere that we need to be in. I like to tease and say that I am the perpetual guest star in their episodes. I like to treat them like they’ve always been there because it is a whole new cast of actors that are stepping in and creating this world. I’m so glad you asked that because it’s something that I, and the rest of our cast and the crew, have started to take a lot of pride in. Leading a series is a big responsibility, but this is a reboot of a series that fans loved and remember fondly. It’s one thing to have a show click for you, but then the next step is clicking with the ensemble that gets put together.

Five Thoughts on Quantum Leap's “July 13, 1985” (Multiversity Comics)

Welcome back, leapers! If you're new to Multiversity's Quantum Leap coverage, know that for the past two summers we've been revisiting the original series, ...

Again, the charm of this show is the leaping back and forth in time, into different bodies. But while I get the desire for a more stable supporting cast, the show’s charm is the leaps, not the behind the scenes, and there is way that this reboot forgets that and goes too big on the other end. While there are a fair amount of original series episodes that take place in my 1982 and on lifetime, most of the series takes place between the early 50s and the late 70s, in part because it allowed the series to get cute with references and allusions that the adults watching the series on NBC in its original run would recognize and do the Leo pointing at the TV gif at. The show also adds in the mystery of Al’s daughter’s involvement to give a more overarching structure, which later seasons of the original run did as well, often times to diminishing returns.Continued below While the rest of the episode does a pretty good job honoring the original series, through making Sam and Al pieces of the story, this feels like the easiest way to incorporate some of that initial series magic into this show, and it fell flat. That is a perfect theme song and, while I recognize that there is likely no way they could do the 90-second intro for a series in 2022, even just referencing it throughout the score would’ve been enough.
