Falcons vs. Rams Q&A: Can LA Avoid Major Upset? (Sports Illustrated)

Both the Atlanta Falcons and Los Angeles Rams look to pick up their first win of the season during a Week 2 matchup at SoFi Stadium.

But I'll take the Rams in a one-possession finish. Cam Akers was fixing to be the Rams' go-to rusher in Week 1, but he was no where to he seen with just three carries for zero yards. Additionally, Rams linebacker Bobby Wagner will need to keep close tabs on Patterson as a receiver and rusher. LA allowed Bills quarterback Josh Allen to run 10 times for 56 yards and a touchdown in Week 1, a total that could've been higher had the game remained competitive. Atlanta blew a 16-point fourth-quarter lead in a 27-26 Week 1 loss to the New Orleans Saints at home. LA allowed a dominant Buffalo d-line to sack quarterback Matthew Stafford seven times, as he was bullied and bludgeoned all night long.

Falcons rookie Arnold Ebiketie deserves some consideration as well. Let’s go with Rams DT Greg Gaines, who’s a more proven commodity than Falcons defensive tackle Anthony Rush. David Edwards, on the other hand, didn’t perform his best in Week 1, but is still probably a slight upgrade over what the Falcons have to offer in Eljiah Wilkinson. Meanwhile, Rams OL Rob Havenstein is arguably one of the best right tackles in the game. Not too many people would be surprised to see the Birds suffer defeat at SoFi Stadium, however, as not many are giving them a chance. The choke job against the Saints does not have to define this team’s season, but whether or not it does will be up to them. The Rams will at the very least have the benefit of three extra days of rest along with no travel, while the Birds have to travel cross country. A win would overcome the odds, the travel disadvantage and just about everything else. The Falcons will get back to .500 in the early going and will put themselves in position to move above that mark for the first time since 2017 (I will continue to reference this statistic a lot until it finally happens). Falcons look good, they get their fans’ hopes up and then absolutely blow it down the stretch leaving us wondering where it all went wrong.

But we're not discouraged of what we can accomplish if we can turn that attitude around and get into the win column and start getting some momentum. Falcons - Rams quick recap: Atlanta rallies but falls short on the ... (The Falcoholic)

The Falcons saw a Rams team that certainly rebounded effectively from their opening game loss.

The Falcons answered, with Marcus Mariota finding Drake London and then Olamide Zaccheaus for a score. He missed on his next sideline pass to Drake London, missed another one to London on the next play, and and then threw one that was just a touch high to Cordarrelle Patterson. Unfortunately, Patterson couldn’t bring it in, and it bounced in the air for an agonizingly long time, giving a Rams defender a chance to pick it off. The Rams found Cooper Kupp, they found holes in the zone, the Falcons kept missing tackles, and over and over again we saw the defense looking like they did during the lowest points of the 2021 season. The Rams wanted to score before the half, and a series of sideline grabs by Cooper Kupp got them close enough for Matthew Stafford to take an end zone shot. A first down run by Cordarrelle Patterson got the team ever closer to the end zone, but they found themselves in a 4th and inches situation. Mariota found Drake London on the run and the Falcons chipped away on the ground to get inside the 20, but a false start on Chris Lindstrom and a Bobby Wagner sack on third down had the Falcons settling for a field goal try. The Rams marched down inside the Falcons 10, where a short gain by Cam Akers gave way to a near-touchdown to Tyler Higbee, and then Allen Robinson getting a release and finding a touchdown over A.J. The Falcons saw Mariota skip a pass into the dirt to kick things off, but a bad snap that actually hit Kyle Pitts in motion and bounced off was the real lowlight of the drive. Thankfully Tyler Allgeir fell on it, but then Mariota threw a deep ball right into the hands of a Rams defender, but it was erased by a pass interference call on Jalen Ramsey. After a three yard gain by Caleb Huntley, Marcus Mariota threw a nice ball to KhaDarel Hodge to pick up a first down and then some after Hodge kept running. He saved the next sequence with a huge 3rd and 8 scramble to convert on first odwn, getting the Falcons deeper into Rams territory.

Studs and duds from Rams' narrow win over Falcons (Rams Wire)

Here are some of the best and worst performers from the Rams' narrow win over the Falcons, led by Cobie Durant and Cooper Kupp.

He also threw two more interceptions and almost had a third in the end zone when the Rams were on the 1-yard line. The Rams as a team didn’t do a lot to pressure Mariota, with two of their sacks coming from Bobby Wagner and Durant on blitzes. He also missed a tackle on Cordarrelle Patterson’s 10-yard run earlier in the game. Long hasn’t gotten off to a very good start this season, and it might cost him his spot in the lineup if Durant keeps playing the way he did. He chased down Mariota on a scramble to the outside and had 12 tackles, with one of those going for a loss. He’s the faster linebacker between him and Bobby Wagner, but the combination of the two has really helped the middle of the Rams defense. He finished with 11 catches for 108 yards and two touchdowns, another excellent showing from the Rams’ No. As usual, he was reliable as a blocker, too, which is an underrated part of his game. Durant stepped in for the injured Troy Hill in the second quarter and quickly had an impact in the secondary. Not a bad debut for the rookie. Kupp was quiet on the first two drives of the game, not seeing a single pass thrown his way. They held Atlanta to 261 total yards, got off the field defensively 70% of the time on third down and only committed three penalties.

Rams-Falcons: Winners and Losers from an ugly victory over Atlanta (Turf Show Times)

Two interceptions by Matthew Stafford let Atlanta back in this game.

It was kind of a case of being in the right place at the right time, but he still deserves credit for making the play. Stafford has the ability to play better, and it’s fair to expect more from him. The Falcons probably wouldn’t have gotten back into this game if it weren’t for a blocked Riley Dixon punt in Rams territory that was returned for a touchdown. Matthew Stafford played well enough for the Rams to win. So when Hill was already out of the game and David Long, Jr. Hollins sacked Mariota and forced a fumble - sealing the victory for Los Angeles. Mariota pulled the ball on a read-option type play, but he ended up running into the waiting arms of Hollins for a four-yard loss to set up 3rd and 13. The rookie corner came in the game to replace an injured Troy Hill - and he immediately made his presence felt. After recording only one catch in his first game as a Ram, Robinson was much more involved in Week 2. But Anchrum was injured early in the game, which resulted in Jackson being the next man up. This was an impressive bounce back effort after it seemed Josh Allen and the The very next play Ramsey intercepted Mariota.

Atlanta Falcons lose heartbreaker to Rams, the 28-3 curse lives on ... (CBS46 News Atlanta)

In week 1, the Atlanta Falcons blew a double-digit lead against the heated rival New Orleans Saints to lose in dramatic fashion.

The Falcons were able to move the ball in the first half, but were done in by mistakes. The Super Bowl MVP’s first score came three plays after Rams rookie cornerback Cobie Durant picked off a pass bobbled by Cordarrelle Patterson and returned it 51 yards up the right sideline to the Falcons 9. Atlanta then turned it over on downs on its next possession when Patterson was stopped by Bobby Wagner and Greg Gaines. On third-and-13 from the Rams 24, Mariota tried to find Bryan Edwards, but it was picked off by Ramsey. Los Angeles took a safety when returner Brandon Powell ran out of the end zone on punt formation after a three-and-out. Los Angeles would convert that into a touchdown when Stafford connected with Allen Robinson for a 1-yard score.

Rams takeaways: Plenty to pick on, especially Stafford picks (Los Angeles Times)

The Rams won, but Matthew Stafford continued his issues with interceptions, having two more passes picked off by the Atlanta Falcons. That's five picks in ...

The Falcons converted two third downs on the first drive and only one thereafter. Rams special teams units showed last season that they could improve by season’s end. Durant entered Sunday’s game at cornerback after Troy Hill suffered a groin injury in the second quarter. “Made the most of them.” However, unlike the others, they did not lose, holding on to beat the visiting Atlanta Falcons 31-27. I just take advantage of my opportunities.” It harked to last season when, in the second game, a snap bounced off the Rams punt protector and the Indianapolis Colts recovered the ball in the end zone for a touchdown. He also caught two passes for 18 yards. The punt unit needs work: In the second game of the 2022 season, the Falcons blocked a punt by Riley Dixon and returned it 26 yards for a touchdown. The defense was much better on third down: After allowing the Bills to convert nine of 10 times on third down, the Rams stopped the Falcons seven of 10 times. Falcons - Rams recap: Blowout becomes a comeback becomes a loss (The Falcoholic)

The question isn't whether this team is better—they are—but how much further they have to go before they can win these games where they're toppling in the ...

The Falcons are better and have more fight than a year ago, just as we suggested in Week 1. The Rams were undone by turnovers, but Atlanta’s ability to get after Stafford was limited, their ability to stop the run largely woeful, and the successful aggression that defined the effort missing by at least half, mostly in the “successful” portion. - After a huge day on the ground against the Saints, the Falcons couldn’t repeat this time. We can debate whether the play call was the right one—Patterson up the middle after attempting to sow some pre-snap trickery didn’t work all that well—but I am not going to criticize the Falcons for doing for it this year in a season where I expect more ups and downs than wins. - Also, while the throw under pressure to Bryan Edwards gave Jalen Ramsey a real shot at the pick, it’s hard to argue with the notion that Patterson has a heavy share of blame for the first interception. I can’t be the only one who thought many of those snaps were bobbled or coming in a bit low, and Dalman hits an in-motion Kyle Pitts on a play that’s sort of tough to assign blame for. - Mariota is a bit of an enigma at this point, because the highs and lows wax and wane so suddenly. Arthur Smith is quick to wave away suggestions that Marcus Mariota is falling short or that targeting Kyle Pitts infrequently is a losing strategy, and he’ll look to address both lines of questioning with stellar performances from the duo while winning games in the coming weeks. The rookie linebacker was up-and-down in his defensive action on Sunday, at least on first glance, but that tremendous athleticism proved game-changing on the blocked punt against the Rams. What’s clear is that the Falcons will do what they will in pursuit of who they want to be. They were a couple of missed opportunities away from completing the comeback, but considering virtually nobody expected that comeback to happen, the fact that Atlanta got so close is a sign that they’re figuring out how to come back. The question isn’t whether this team is better—they are—but how much further they have to go before they can win these games where they’re toppling in the fourth quarter or on the cusp of victory near the end.

Turning a wide receiver into a fullback is Sean McVay's latest ... (Rams Wire)

On the Rams' first offensive play of Sunday's game against the Falcons, Sean McVay pulled back the curtain on a new wrinkle. He lined up Ben Skowronek, ...

He can play receiver, he lined up in the eye a handful of times today. At the end of the 2020 season, when the Rams were so reliant on 11 personnel, McVay used 12 personnel with two tight ends. Despite his unusual body type for the position, Skowronek has two things that make him an effective fullback: (relative) athleticism and a willingness to block. But there were probably close to 10 plays where he aligned in the backfield as a fullback, whether it was to block or catch a pass out of the backfield. Here’s an example of one play where Skowronek caught a pass as a fullback, which helped him get matched up with a defensive lineman. It only went for a 2-yard gain, but McVay set the tone early with this new wrinkle on offense.

How NFL Week 2 impacted the Los Angeles Rams (Turf Show Times)

A QB injury in the NFC West and wins for L.A.'s next three opponents.

The Rams face Dallas in Week 5. The same type of Kyler Murray who beat the Rams in 2021, but this time without DeAndre Hopkins. The Seahawks still appear to be the worst of the four teams, scoring zero offensive points in Week 2. The Rams play the 0-2 Panthers in Week 6. The Rams played the Chiefs in Week 12 and the Chargers in Week 17. The Lions have scored at least 35 points in each of their first two games. The Saints are 1-1. Want the Rams to trade for Kareem Hunt? Do the Rams need to address backup quarterback in 2023? The Bucs are 2-0. A lot of Rams fans were curious about rookie punter Jordan Stout in the draft and he had two punts for 81 yards for the Ravens. Former NFC West receiver Christian Kirk had 78 yards and two touchdowns for the Jaguars.

That ties him for second in franchise history with Elroy Hirsch and Torry Holt, and puts him only two games behind Bruce for the team record. Later on in the game, he sacked Mariota. Ramsey doesn’t often have the ball in his hands, so it’s hard to gauge how fast he is compared to his NFL peers. The Rams had a 99.7% chance of winning at one point in the game and still nearly lost. Kupp is hot on the heels of Isaac Bruce for one franchise record. They managed to hold on for the win, which was the 600th in franchise history. They joined the Eagles, Steelers, Giants, Bears, Washington and Packers as the only seven teams in the NFL to win at least 600 games. It’s become almost impossible to keep him out of the end zone. They also led 31-10 at one point in the fourth quarter, seemingly on their way to an easy win. Brown of the Lions. The Rams have played some crazy games since 2017, and Sunday’s tilt against the Falcons certainly ranks up there.
