The 100 Husker fans I talked with the morning of the Ohio State game in Lincoln felt good about Nebraska’s chances to flourish under Frost’s leadership. Even though Frost and the Huskers frittered away an almost-certain victory in Boulder, Colorado, in Week 2 of the 2019 season that would have given them a tremendous amount of momentum, the arrival of ESPN’s College GameDay three weeks later gave NU a chance to redeem itself. The beginning of the 2019 season was perhaps the high point of Scott Frost optimism in Husker Nation.

Nebraska football and Oklahoma will renew their rivalry on Saturday and here are three bold predictions for the Huskers.

The Huskers will pressure Dillon Gabriel enough to force an interception and they’ll force a fumble. On FOX Sports Big Noon Kickoff show, Nebraska football fans made it very clear they want Urban Meyer as their next head coach.

Any program to bring Meyer in would be forfeiting their soul, and millions of dollars in the process. Could it lead to a few more wins here and there? Could Meyer return to the college ranks? Frost, formerly a Husker golden boy who was meant to return the program to its once-dominant state, failed to do so. Meyer does not do things by the book, hence why he couldn’t deal with the minimal constraints the NFL placed upon him. Long gone are the days of Eric Crouch and Tom Osborne.

Scott Frost was supposed to be coaching Saturday against Oklahoma. Instead, he was fired just three games into his fifth season. What went so wrong?

Many of the coaches and staffers had ties to Nebraska, which Frost believed would help expedite a return to the way things had been done in the Husker heyday. An offensive innovator returning home to a former power and one of the most iconic brands in college football. The group collectively had a steep learning curve regarding life in the Big Ten. Then, the Huskers blew a touchdown lead against Michigan State despite allowing 15 yards and zero first downs in the second half. Frost, though, spurned Nebraska and legendary head coach Tom Osborne and committed to Stanford University, where he spent two seasons before ultimately returning to Lincoln, taking a redshirt season and starting two years for the Huskers in 1996 and 1997. Introducing Frost, then-Nebraska athletic director Bill Moos said, "He is not only, in my opinion, the premier young coach in America, but I believe he was everybody's first choice. There, he spent four seasons learning Chip Kelly’s offensive system and two more as the offensive coordinator after Kelly left for the NFL and Mark Helfrich took the top job. The 33rd head coach in the illustrious history of this fine institution.” Instead, Frost never made it to the game.

The game was played every year until 1997, but was was not a priority after the creation of the Big 12, which drew anger from fans and was at least a minor factor in the 'Huskers leaving the conference for the Big Ten. Kanak led the Sooners with 10 tackles in less than half a game, and he caused major issues for Nebraska's protections. The Sooners posted 355 yards on 8.1 yards per play and held the Cornhuskers to 3.4 yards per play. Oklahoma played well in its first two games against UTEP and Kent State, but the first half against Nebraska was perfect football. The opening scripted drive spread the ball around, but after a few quarterback hits, the body language quickly fell. The 49 points mark the most scored by the Sooners against the Cornhuskers in the 88 meetings between these two programs. However, a porous offensive line allowed the Sooners to get four sacks off Thompson and produced just 2.8 yards per carry for starting running back Anthony Grant.

Quarterback Casey Thompson completed 13 of 18 passes for 108 yards and a touchdown as the Husker attack generated 77 of its 148 yards on its opening drive.

Punter Brian Buschini was injured making the tackle on a 34-yard punt return — he limped onto the field for an attempt later in the quarter — and Oklahoma needed just five plays to finish another touchdown drive on a 1-yard Marcus Major run. Gabriel then found sophomore receiver Jalil Farooq in the front corner of the end zone on a pinpoint ball from Gabriel for a 25-yard score. Thompson was under severe duress again after that, even absorbing a hit to the helmet on a play that disqualified OU linebacker DaShaun White for targeting. It converted a third-and-7 and then some as Gabriel weaved down the sideline for a career-long 61-yard touchdown run to tie the game. Nebraska’s first drive began with gains of 11, 16, 11 and nine yards on a variety of short passes and an Anthony Grant run. The Sooners defense penetrated a patchwork NU offensive line for four sacks and a flurry of additional pressures while the OU offense scored 35 unanswered points into intermission.

He had less than a week to prepare the team for a game against a top-ten-ranked opponent. A win is feasible if the Huskers’ offense can get back on track and the defense improves. The team’s next opponent is Indiana, who has a 3-0 record but has weaknesses that Nebraska can exploit. Will it trigger a stronger response for the rest of the season? It was the end of a wild week for Nebraska football. It’s difficult to predict what can turn the Nebraska defense around when there isn’t much good improvement from week to week. Though the defense pushed several drives to a halt, the scores it gave up much outweighed those. It was essentially a nightmare for the Nebraska defense. Nebraska football absorbed a crushing 49-14 defeat, falling to 1-3 in the 2022 college football season. The Cornhuskers’ blowout defeat against the Sooners, though, was simply the culmination of a difficult week. Husker football needs to join the new millennium and explore more than one race of head coach if it wants to stop its death spiral.

It was his ability to see where the game was going and adapt as quickly if not quicker than everyone else. Trying to restore the program using the same trial-and-buyout method employed by the rest of the college football world isn’t working. That’s an option, and one not being fully explored, according to the candidate lists I’ve seen. Considering how many well-respected Black players/football minds have come through the program alone, it’s atrocious that Mickey Joseph had to break the barrier as an interim. College football isn’t the NFL as far as Black head coaches are concerned. If you can’t lure away an established coach, and even the scummiest of the scumbags won’t take your money, you’re left with the current list of candidates. This is a continued spiral since Tom Osborne handed the reins to Frank Solich. The student section can chant “We want Urban!” until they’re without a voice, but if Meyer returns to coaching, his charades in Jacksonville will prevent him from going to Lincoln. I don’t know who inside the program thinks it’s still possible to waltz through a regular season on the way to regularly playing for national championships. How convenient it is to overlook Melvin Gordon’s 408-yard game in 2014, or last year when Pelini returned to coach LSU’s defense, and he was whatever is worse than horrible. When he’s not on hold with you, he’s sending me and the other dozen normal guys on the group thread hype videos from the Skers’ official Instagram account. The expectations don’t match the resources, and it’s no longer an attractive gig for big-name coaches.
