3 reasons IU football beat Western Kentucky: Hoosiers survive upset ... (The Indianapolis Star)

IU left it dramatically late Saturday, needing a fourth-quarter comeback and a 51-yard overtime field goal to squeeze past feisty Western Kentucky.

But Campbell rescued them, nailing a 51-yard field goal and clinching a come-from-behind win IU badly needed. A late-half drive stalled because of a sack. But the Hoosiers’ inability to consistently generate a pass rush without blitzing let Reed sit in his pocket and pick that secondary apart. Austin Reed burned an experienced Indiana secondary for 321 passing yards and two touchdowns. There was a drive that ended when Shaun Shivers dropped a lateral from Bazelak and made little effort to cover it before Western Kentucky could. The ground game, while not explosive, at least gave the Hoosiers some of the explosive plays sorely lacking in the Week 1 win over Illinois.

Indiana football: It's just Like This(!!!) (The Crimson Quarry)

It can never just be simple. Indiana is simply averse to a normal football game, that would upset the natural order of things.

But for now the Indiana football Hoosiers are 3-0. Then there was the fourth quarter. When Indiana got the ball, the Hoosiers were... The run game was non-existent for large portions of the game, with Indiana’s backs running into a brick wall. There was week one, when Indiana managed a last-second drive to defeat Illinois after a largely lackluster second half from the offense. Indiana is simply averse to a normal football game, that would upset the natural order of things.

Charles Campbell, special teams deliver in clutch win for Indiana ... (The Daily Hoosier)

Indiana kicker Charles Campbell struggled in last week's win over Idaho. He missed a field goal and had a second miss negated due to a defensive penalty.

“Our guys have bought into it, and you couldn’t see a bigger one than you saw right there at the end.” “He’s a great, great kicker because great kickers make kicks like that when the team needs him, so proud of that guy.” Allen took notice of the kicker’s prolific performance in Saturday’s win and celebrated accordingly, losing his shoe in the bedlam of the moment. Indiana’s kicking defense swarmed WKU kicker Brayden Narveson on both attempts, forcing a miss wide right on the first and cornerback Jaylin Williams blocked the second, which was returned by Bryant Fitzgerald for what was nearly a walk-off score. “I wanted to make sure I got it there, for sure, and just gave it a chance,” Campbell said in a post-game radio interview. You’re supposed to go out there and kick in high-pressure scenarios,” Campbell said.

What Tom Allen Said After Indiana's 33-30 Win Over Western Kentucky (CalBearsMaven)

Indiana football came back to defeat Western Kentucky 33-30 in overtime, moving the Hoosiers' record to 3-0 on the year. Here's what coach Tom Allen said ...

So we've talked about that and we've talked about that and we've talked about that. We've got to get better; I get that, and I understand that, and that's going to be the focus, all the things that the film teaches us. I talked before the game that tackling was going to be big because of the way they make you play, and then stopping the run, which we did up until halftime, and then in the second half of the game -- one of those was a complete misfit by one of our backers that has to make that play. I will say I think playing a lot of guys is a great thing, but we've still got some younger guys that are still making some mistakes in those second reps, and we've got to get better at that, and we will. But at the same time, that to me kind of showed up a little bit, but the bowing up in the score zone, which is inside the 12, and then the red zone is from the 25 to the 12 for us, the way we define it, but our guys did a great job playing great football in that part of the field. So obviously we've got to get things cleaned up to get down there, but we do spend a lot of time on that part of the field to be great in that area because we know if we can force field goals in those situations, we have a chance to win a lot of ballgames. So we used that to talk about, and I got on Charles about that, how it just sets the tone even in that practice. We did have some good runs, but they were doing some things at times, and we've got to have some good answers for that and not get caught in some bad calls, and we know that. So did not do a good enough job, and they got some tempo things at times, and we got some signals -- we were trying to do some things to speed things up, and a couple times for whatever reason our guys didn't get the right signal, so we had to make an adjustment with that so they could see the right signal and tried to even get our guys giving us signals to change some things with that. Ugly at times, but found a way to win the football game, and we've got a lot to learn from and a lot to build off of. Yeah, the thing that they do that really makes it hard is you try to balance the pass game fits where you're trying to help us in the pass game and also stop the run, so trying to borrow back and forth, and they do a good job of stressing you in that area. I'm not saying that at all, but there is a level of recognizing what they can do, and you've just got to get in a that score zone and choke them out.

What Quarterback Connor Bazelak Said After Indiana's 33-30 Win ... (CalBearsMaven)

Indiana football defeated Western Kentucky 33-30 on Saturday, and quarterback Connor Bazelak completed 33-of-55 pass attempts for 364 yards and two ...

Bazelak: I think we really are just going one game at a time. It doesn't really matter what the halftime score is as long as we come out on top at the end, it doesn't really matter. I think the whole team really knows that and believes it that no matter how bad you play, how good you play, as long as we come out on top at the end, we're all good." - LIVE BLOG: Indiana hosts Western Kentucky on Saturday at Noon ET in a Week 3 matchup in Bloomington, Ind. I think it was great how we started that drive just getting things rolling with the run game, I think we had two run calls in a row. We were trying to come out early and get some completions, get in a rhythm. We have to do a better job getting it closer for him. It didn’t look good when we were down, oh what were we down, five, and they were about to score and our defense did a heck of a job holding the field goal and just took it one play at a time on that last drive and found guys open, got some good calls and found Cam (Camper) and Donaven (McCulley) to tie it. We need to clean some things up mentally like running the right routes and pass protection. Bazelak: I was not happy with how we set it up for him. We’ve got a lot of guys that can make plays and when you go fast like we do, it’s always good to have fresh legs coming in and also gives the defense a new look. Bazelak: I think like I said earlier, just taking it one play at a time.

"If you go out there and miss a kick, you just gotta flush it and move on to the next one," Campbell said. "It was just a great win, great team win." That's one of the DNA's of our special teams." "So the whole next week of practice I was really, just, being super detail-oriented. And the reason for it all resided in the resurgent right leg of Indiana's kicker.

Late Defensive Stands, Clutch Kicking Keeps Indiana Undefeated ... (CalBearsMaven)

Indiana football trailed Western Kentucky for the majority of Saturday afternoon, but a pair of late takeaways by the Hoosier defense and composure from ...

We're going to do a great job of holding our guys accountable for getting the little things right,” Allen said. Coach Luke Fickell led the Bearcats to the College Football Playoff last season, which included a 38-24 win at Indiana. Allen couldn’t contain his happiness after a 3-0 start, but he knows Indiana will have to make significant improvements to stay undefeated. He said Indiana has a deep and talented receiving corps, but these mistakes could have swung the game. On the defensive side of the ball, he’s been frustrated with Indiana’s tackling and struggles with stopping the run after each of its first three games. Campbell drilled the pressure-packed kick to win the game, giving Indiana more wins than it had all of last season. Like Allen, Bazelak is thankful to be 3-0, but he still sees room for improvement from the Indiana offense. Western Kentucky’s Joshua Simon fumbled on the next possession, allowing the Hoosiers and Hilltoppers to trade field goals and maintain the eight-point separation. Indiana’s fifth-year kicker Campbell kicked it clean off the turf, and the Hoosiers rushed toward the student section to celebrate a 33-30 win over Western Kentucky on Saturday afternoon at Memorial Stadium. Reed was stuffed on a quarterback keeper, threw an incomplete pass and running back Davion Ervin-Poindexter was stopped short of the goal line. But with a prime opportunity to end Indiana’s hopes of winning, Reed committed a costly turnover in the red zone. – Indiana safety Devon “Monster” Matthews leaped in the air, stretching every inch of his arm to the sky.
