Since it opened at the Majestic Theatre on Jan. 26, 1988, Broadway's "Phantom" has had over 13500 performances to 19.5 million people, producers said.

"Phantom" tells the story of a deformed composer who haunts the Paris Opera House and falls madly in love with an innocent young soprano, Christine. "The Lion King" is next, having begun performances in 1997. One reviewer in the New York Times called it, "psychologically lightweight." Last week, it hit $867,997 — and producers may have seen the writing on the wall. Producers said the show has been Broadway's largest generator of jobs in Broadway and U.S. The character was first brought to the big screen in a 1925 silent film.
