London — The reign of Great Britain's new monarch, King Charles III, began immediately when his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, died on September 8.

To be clear, the ceremony is religious and symbolic, but not a constitutional requirement, and Charles III is no less the king for not having been through the process yet. On the occasion, Charles' wife Camilla will be crowned queen consort by his side. Made in France: the only recording of God Save the King to be had (The Guardian)

If you want to play a recording of the UK's revamped national anthem then you will probably have to rely on an unlikely source: a French opera singer.

Kientz, who has travelled across the UK, said he did not expect his recording of God Save the King to provide much of an income: “I really love this anthem because it’s very vocal, you have many things to do. Kientz’s recording of God Save the King had been largely ignored, but it has recently been played hundreds of thousands of times as people look for a version with the correct words. The year after they asked me to record God Save the Queen – and God Save the King.”

King Charles III Now Reigns — But Who Were King Charles I and ... (Today.com)

The name "Charles" for a monarch has a colorful royal history, fraught with beheadings, civil wars, years spent in exile and illegitimate children.

Following Cromwell's death, Charles II became King of England, Scotland and Ireland in 1660, restoring the monarchy. “Princess Elizabeth made clear, it was simply because she liked the name." Charles II may be remembered as a playboy, but his story has its darker sides. [Will the British public warm to King Charles III?](https://www.today.com/video/how-will-king-charles-fare-as-britain-s-oldest-monarch-148134981884) [recently addressed members of Parliament](https://www.today.com/news/news/king-charles-iiis-address-parliament-significant-rcna47255?search=westminster%20hall) following the death of Queen Elizabeth, vowing to uphold his country's “vital parliamentary traditions." After Charles I was beheaded, the monarchy was abolished altogether, and Charles II was forced to spend more than a decade in exile, mostly in the modern-day Netherlands. [Diana, Princess of Wales,](https://www.today.com/news/news/tony-blair-says-queen-responded-perfectly-princess-dianas-death-rcna47449) and Sarah, Duchess of York, “are descendants of Charles II through his various illegitimate children," Harris said. Charles II is known as the “Merry Monarch” because of his lavish lifestyle, partly inspired by the time he spent in the court of his party-loving cousin, the French King Louis XIV. [described as “reserved”](https://www.royal.uk/charles-i) — he had a stammer, like Elizabeth's father, King George VI — and also “self-righteous,” his son, Charles II, was anything but. As suggested by this grisly end, Charles I was not the most popular king in his time, and is “remembered as a very controversial figure,” royal historian Carolyn Harris told TODAY.

Charles III, When Young (Harvard Magazine)

The Prince of Wales's star turn at Harvard's 350th anniversary gala, in 1986.

It was a hunger that was to provide a sense of meaning and the life of meaning that conducted him in the search for truth in all dimensions—material, physical, and spiritual. There is in existence a proved and tested natural science dedicated to the study of the soul of man and the meaning of his creation. What I am trying to say is that if during the course of a person’s education he is introduced to the principles of a religious attitude to life, as the Greek philosophers and Hebrew teachers would have seen it, then it is perhaps possible to learn to equate human rights with human obligations. “While we have been right to demand the kind of technical education relevant to the needs of the twentieth century,” he observed, “it would appear that we may have forgotten that when all is said and done, a good man, as the Greeks would say, is a nobler work than a good technologist. It is possible then to see a relationship between moral values and the uses of science, and for those who affect our lives in some way or other through planning and administrative committees to appreciate that at the end of the process there is always a man or a woman, or a family. There is no doubt in my mind that the education of the whole man needs to be based on a sure foundation—in other words, on the values of our own Christian, Western traditions, which in turn are the product of Hellenism and Judaism. “I cannot help feeling that one of the problems gradually dawning on the Western, Christian world is that we have for too long, and too dangerously, ignored and rejected the best and most fundamental traditions of our Greek, Roman, and Jewish inheritance. “I confess that I have not addressed such a large gathering since I spoke to 40,000 Gujarati buffalo farmers in India in 1980, and that was a rare experience.” While we have been right to demand the kind of technical education relevant to the needs of the twentieth century, it would appear that we may have forgotten that when all is said and done, a good man, as the Greeks would say, is a nobler work than a good technologist. Back in 1978 we consulted a classicist—Mason Hammond ’25, caller of academic processions at both the 1936 and 1986 observances—as to how to refer in Latin to a 350th anniversary. As His Royal Highness was waiting to enter Tercentenary Theatre that morning, he had, reportedly, a pronounced case of the jitters. As an old Cambridge man, and one hailing from a college not more than an easy bicycle ride from John Harvard’s Emmanuel College, I am particularly pleased and proud to be standing here ‘in the Yard.’…I must confess that I am somewhat surprised, as well…because I thought that in Massachusetts they weren’t too certain about the supposed benefits of royalty.

Queen Elizabeth II left Buckingham Palace for the last time, her coffin borne by a horse-drawn gun carriage and trailed by grieving family members, ...

Chris Bond, from Truro in southwest England, was among those lining up along the banks of the River Thames. Troops involved in the procession have been preparing since the queen died. “I have 1,001 emotions when I see her,” he said. They stood or sat on folding chairs, umbrellas at the ready, takeout coffees in hand. Hundreds of thousands are expected to do the same in London when the queen lies in state at the 900-year-old Westminster Hall, the oldest building in Parliament, for four days before her state funeral on Monday. “So, we had to be here. Christopher Ghika, of the Household division, who organized the ceremonial aspects of the queen’s funeral said it was a sad day, “but it’s our last opportunity to do our duty for the queen and it’s our first opportunity to do it for the king, and that makes us all very proud.” Applause broke out as it went through Horse Guards Parade. We’ve been here a few times when there have been special occasions, but this one, I couldn’t miss this.” Thousands more were standing or sitting in line along the banks of the River Thames waiting their turn to file past the coffin when it lies in state for four days before the queen’s state funeral on Monday. With the Royal Standard and crown of state resting on top of the coffin and artillery firing salutes at one-minute intervals, the solemn procession was designed to underscore the queen’s 70 years as head of state as the national mourning process shifts to the grand boulevards and historic landmarks of the U.K. [Share this article on Facebook](https://www.facebook.com/sharer.php?u=https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/tv/tv-news/king-charles-prince-william-prince-harry-queen-elizabeth-procession-1235220366/&title=King%20Charles%20III,%20Princes%20William%20and%20Harry%20Walk%20in%20Procession%20to%20Honor%20Queen%20Elizabeth%20II&sdk=joey&display=popup&ref=plugin&src=share_button&app_id=352999048212581) [Share this article on Twitter](https://twitter.com/intent/tweet?url=https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/tv/tv-news/king-charles-prince-william-prince-harry-queen-elizabeth-procession-1235220366/&text=King%20Charles%20III%2C%20Princes%20William%20and%20Harry%20Walk%20in%20Procession%20to%20Honor%20Queen%20Elizabeth%20II&via=thr) [Share this article on Email](mailto:?subject=thr%20:%20King%20Charles%20III,%20Princes%20William%20and%20Harry%20Walk%20in%20Procession%20to%20Honor%20Queen%20Elizabeth%20II&body=https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/tv/tv-news/king-charles-prince-william-prince-harry-queen-elizabeth-procession-1235220366/%20-%20King%20Charles%20III,%20Princes%20William%20and%20Harry%20Walk%20in%20Procession%20to%20Honor%20Queen%20Elizabeth%20II) [Show additional share options](#) [Share this article on Print]() [Share this article on Comment](https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/tv/tv-news/king-charles-prince-william-prince-harry-queen-elizabeth-procession-1235220366/#respond) [Share this article on Whatsapp](whatsapp://send?text=King%20Charles%20III,%20Princes%20William%20and%20Harry%20Walk%20in%20Procession%20to%20Honor%20Queen%20Elizabeth%20II%20-%20https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/tv/tv-news/king-charles-prince-william-prince-harry-queen-elizabeth-procession-1235220366/) [Share this article on Linkedin](https://www.linkedin.com/shareArticle?mini=1&url=https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/tv/tv-news/king-charles-prince-william-prince-harry-queen-elizabeth-procession-1235220366/&title=King%20Charles%20III,%20Princes%20William%20and%20Harry%20Walk%20in%20Procession%20to%20Honor%20Queen%20Elizabeth%20II&summary&source=thr) [Share this article on Reddit](https://www.reddit.com/submit?url=https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/tv/tv-news/king-charles-prince-william-prince-harry-queen-elizabeth-procession-1235220366/&title=King%20Charles%20III,%20Princes%20William%20and%20Harry%20Walk%20in%20Procession%20to%20Honor%20Queen%20Elizabeth%20II) [Share this article on Pinit](https://pinterest.com/pin/create/link/?url=https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/tv/tv-news/king-charles-prince-william-prince-harry-queen-elizabeth-procession-1235220366/&description=King%20Charles%20III,%20Princes%20William%20and%20Harry%20Walk%20in%20Procession%20to%20Honor%20Queen%20Elizabeth%20II) [Share this article on Tumblr](https://www.tumblr.com/widgets/share/tool/preview?shareSource=legacy&canonicalUrl&url=https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/tv/tv-news/king-charles-prince-william-prince-harry-queen-elizabeth-procession-1235220366/&posttype=link&title=King%20Charles%20III,%20Princes%20William%20and%20Harry%20Walk%20in%20Procession%20to%20Honor%20Queen%20Elizabeth%20II) [Queen Elizabeth II](https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/t/queen-elizabeth-ii/) left Buckingham Palace for the last time Wednesday, her coffin borne by a horse-drawn gun carriage and trailed by grieving family members during a journey to the Houses of Parliament, where it [will lie in state until the funeral early next week.](https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/tv/tv-news/bbc-queen-elizabeth-live-stream-coffin-1235220297/)

The tragedy of King Charles III (POLITICO.eu)

A life of public service is forcing the newly anointed monarch to end of a lifetime of private activism. That may be easier said than done.

That’s in part because the monarch is “regarded as a British institution, and it isn’t regarded as a Scottish institution anymore,” he added. For instance, his near-annual trips to Ireland seem calculated to build on the queen’s watershed visit in 2011, which marked a high point in the long and violent history of British-Irish relations. “Nobody knows what utter hell it is to be Prince of Wales,” he reportedly said in 2004. In addition to the crown, Charles has inherited his mother’s position as head of the Commonwealth, but “There has been a misinterpretation of what he does — he travels the world and he brings to light issues that are raised with him. One [Sunday paper](https://twitter.com/BBCHelena/status/1568684998609481728) set out what is at stake, asking on the front page whether he could be “the last king of Scotland.” Christine, a retiree from the focus group in Oldham, said: “I think he should make his feelings clear — after all he is the king. “But he has acquired a lot of wisdom in his 70 years. He has stood in support of fox hunting and in opposition to “ugly” modern architecture, but he has also championed organic farming and advocated for action on climate change well before the subject was embraced by the mainstream. “My life will of course change as I take up my new responsibilities,” he said, a little more than 24 hours after his mother died at Balmoral Castle, bringing to an end the reign of the only monarch most Britons can remember. While he can rightly consider himself vindicated now that the zeitgeist has caught up with him, Charles still hasn’t been able to escape the occasional bout of ridicule. The entire speech was designed to reassure a country in mourning for Queen Elizabeth II that her successor would not depart from the style of steady, even-handed leadership she had embodied.

The Christian Anglican Church is the established Church of England, meaning that there is a formal relationship between church and state in which it operates.

Discrimination has increased recently in the form of anti-Semitism towards those of the Jewish faith and Islamophobia towards those of the Islamic faith. Likewise, in recent decades, psychiatry in the United States has also paid increased attention to the influence of spirituality and formal religions. The Christian Anglican Church is the established Church of England, meaning that there is a formal relationship between church and state in which it operates. In England, as perhaps some of us are learning from the Queen’s death, there is no separation of church and state as there is in the United States. King Charles III must bite his lip to emulate the Queen's success on ... (iNews)

Queen Elizabeth created an enormous space for her son to exert influence around the world, whether Charles is able to exercise restraint only time will tell.

Whether Charles is able to exercise restraint and bite his lip through the inevitable tedium of international affairs and diplomacy in order to exploit this enormous opportunity, only time will tell. By promoting British culture as well as its heritage, Charles can boost Britain’s image as well as his own standing, and steal a march on the Government. As a woman who enjoyed extraordinary – and perhaps unique – celebrity and respect around the world, Queen Elizabeth paved the way for women everywhere to assume roles of leadership and high status. The UK has provided a widespread contribution to sport, music, literature, art and science around the world, more so than its GDP figures or its minor influence on world security. “It will no longer be possible for me to give so much of my time and energies to the charities and issues for which I care so deeply.” He went on to have a more direct impact on events in the Middle East, though. Our defence relationship with the US is very important to us. Foreign policy is a very unemotional business; it’s about getting on with things and being pragmatic, so how Charles conducts himself now is the important thing.” Given that the King has previously made clear his thoughts on many aspects of foreign affairs, critics will be on the lookout for indiscretions. Charles is said to have been unaware of Fawcett’s activities. The Queen had that uncanny ability of never appearing bored and always being attentive. For Charles III, his sternest test may come on the world stage.
