Seahawks Mailbag: Week 1 Surprises, Booing & More (Seahawks.com)

The Seahawks are 1-0 after a wild Monday night win over the Denver Broncos, and now they have a quick turnaround before their Week 2 game in Santa Clara.

But an important thing to remember about Carroll's offensive philosophy is that the goal is balance more than it is to just run the ball all the time, and for Carroll balance isn't about having a certain number of runs or passes in a given game, but to have a balanced attack capable of moving the ball successfully by whatever means necessary. To me, one of the more interesting questions going forward is whether or not the Seahawks still use the three-safety looks we saw in training camp with Jones joining Adams and Quandre Diggs on the field. Somewhere down the road the Seahawks will have a game where they run the ball a ton, but Carroll's philosophy is not to force that just for the sake of getting more carries. Wilson did a lot of great things for the Seahawks and the Seattle area, on and off the field, and someday he will almost certainly go in the Ring of Honor, or raise the 12 Flag, or have his number retired, or some other honor. That being said, Carroll would be the first to tell you that he would have liked to see the Seahawks run the ball a little more often and more successfully. The stage seemed to be set for Russell Wilson to potentially pull of his specialty—a fourth quarter comeback—for his new team while facing his former team, but with more than a minute still on the clock, the Broncos let the clock run down, called time out, then attempted what would have been tied for the second longest field goal in NFL history, at sea level, outdoors and into the end of Lumen Field known for late-game chaos.

Seahawks safety Jamal Adams needs knee surgery, Pete Carroll says (The Seattle Times)

Seahawks safety Jamal Adams will need surgery to repair a knee injury suffered in Monday night's win, Pete Carroll said on his radio show.

“When he moves to his left, it’s hard for him, numbers-wise,” Carroll said, adding that “we were really focused on Russ’ play with our pass rush and that’s really the way to play him. It was good he had his mom and dad in the locker room during the game when he was in there to kind of help him through it and all that. Carroll revealed one specific detail of it Monday that he felt was key — making Wilson move to his left. According to Pro Football Focus, Wilson was 5-for-11 when under pressure for just 24 yards. Need to make the kick.” The fact that he is such a heartthrob about the game of football — he loves playing and it’s just, he can’t deal with it right now. Adams played just 12 games last year before having shoulder surgery in December, and also just 12 games in his first season with the Seahawks due to a groin injury. “We were right on the line (of McManus’ range),” Hackett said. McManus later tweeted: “46 yard line left hash was my line to get to. I didn’t even think that was an opportunity to kick a field goal. Carroll didn’t give a specific timeline for Adams, but the injury appears as if it could be one to put his season in danger. “He loves the game so much.

Four Downs with Bob Condotta and Adam Jude: Recapping ... (The Seattle Times)

There is plenty still to discuss from Seattle's wild 17-16 win over Russell Wilson and the Denver Broncos in Four Downs with beat reporters Bob Condotta and ...

The best asset in the NFL remains a good QB on a rookie contract, and finding that QB is still the Seahawks’ best bet for sustained success beyond 2022. Even if you take out the 67-yard Wilson-to-Jerry Jeudy TD in which Jeudy beat rookie cornerback Coby Bryant, Denver’s average was 5.8 per play, which would put Seattle at 22nd for the week (and further reinforces why the Broncos should have gone for it). Condotta: I was a little — you could really hear it in the press box when he got booed taking the field for warmups. Seattle gained just 253 yards and was outgained by 180 yards, including a staggering 176-34 in the second half. Jude: I keep going back to what Pete Carroll said the day the Wilson trade became official in March, when he laid out his vision about the Seahawks needing a “point guard” at quarterback, someone who can involve the rest of the players because “we’re going to win with defense, we’re going to win with how we play on special teams. During his decade in Seattle, Wilson was 22 for 29 on such plays, getting the first down 20 times with a passer rating of 145.7. There’s no denying Wilson’s greatness, and there’s no denying what he’s meant to Seattle for the past decade. Condotta: There’s some irony of Wilson somewhat forcing his way out of Seattle — or almost entirely, depending on who you believe — in part so he could play for a coach who would always put the ball in his hands when it matters, instead getting the ball taken out of his hands when it mattered most in his first game with his new team against his former team? There is a clip of Peyton Manning, doing a simulcast of the game with his brother on ESPN2, motioning repeatedly for a timeout and losing his mind that the Broncos were letting the clock continue to tick down to 20 seconds. Two stats help further delineate what a bad decision it was — Brandon McManus is now 2 for 11 on field goals of 58 yards or longer and hasn’t made one beyond 55 outside of the rarefied air of Denver or in a dome since 2016, according to The Athletic. And you know it had to eat at Wilson that he didn’t get a chance, on fourth down with the game on the line, to win it his way in his return to Seattle. Denver rookie coach Nathaniel Hackett will surely get the bulk of the criticism in Denver, but Wilson is a veteran QB who has been in those moments — has thrived in those moments — for years and years.

Surgery For Jamal Adams, Kenneth Walker III Set To Return & Other ... (Seahawks.com)

The morning after the Seahawks beat the Broncos in their season opener, Pete Carroll sat down for his usual radio show on Seattle Sports 710AM.

Whether he's holding up the gunner on the punt team, he's so fast he can just kind of run in front of these guys and stay on them. "If you watch him carefully, he is so fast that you can see it happen in all kinds of different situations on the field. Wilson came up with plenty of big plays, but one way the Seahawks limited the damage was by using the pass rush to get Wilson on the move, particularly to his left. It wasn't always getting clean to get the sack, it was to try to make him go the way we wanted him to go. He loves the game so much, we're going to miss him so much. Carroll said the exact extent of the injury is still being determined, but that the Pro-Bowl safety will need surgery.

The Broncos did show improvement from last year’s squad. The players and coaches own Monday’s loss. It was the first time two different backs had fumbled on the goal-line in the same game since 1987. Give the Broncos credit; they fought to the end in the 17-16 loss. To make matters worse, the Seahawks played with a higher sense of urgency and were more physical. The Broncos looked like they needed a big dose of caffeine.

Seahawks' Carroll details gameplan vs Russell Wilson in ... (710 ESPN Seattle)

In the first Pete Carroll Show of 2022, the Seahawks HC broke down his team's big win over former QB Russell Wilson and the Broncos.

Yeah, it was significant for a lot of reasons beyond just it’s the first game of the year and all that. “And on this night they realized there was a big opportunity and a big statement to be made,” Carroll said. “When he moves to his left, it’s hard for him numbers-wise and all that, so we just we were able to do some stuff,” Carroll said. The more we looked at that matchup, it just looked like it was such a great opportunity to go get something done, and we did.” “I think he moved 10 times and he completed two passes on the times we moved him out of the pocket and moved him around like we were trying to. pulling the flag, he was pulling the flag for everybody.” “After all of the talk and all the build up – we’ve been doubted the whole year and we didn’t have a chance and all that. The kick missed to the left, and it was the Seahawks who came away with the upset victory. Carroll said Monday’s game was a big deal to those former players. “So we get to feel that a little bit, and not that that was a fuel for us, but after the fact, you can tell.” Carroll pointed out that no one expected them to win the game. “It was a thrill to be in that moment and to have that opportunity.

“We gave up a lot of yards, but it’s the power of believing that you can stop somebody no matter how much there is left there,” Carroll said. “It’s so enriching as we go down the rest of the season here that we can do stuff like that because you believe. “It’s just one of those things that we’ve got to keep proving it,” Diggs said. “Russell is a dangerous person, especially in short yardage; he can make a lot of things happen,” added Seattle linebacker Uchenna Nwosu, a particular stalwart Monday. “[Smith] is the best he has ever been,” Carroll said. “He is ready. He is ready for this moment. Linebacker Jordyn Brooks: “We knew what we had, and we knew the guys that we have in this locker room and what we’re capable of. Instead, Hackett trotted out kicker Brandon McManus for a dubious, and doomed to fail, 64-yard field-goal attempt. Wide receiver Tyler Lockett: “The biggest thing, man, we’ve got nothing to lose. We’ve got everything to gain.”

He also injured his finger on the first day of training camp this year and was going to have to play the season with extra protection on his hand. Rookie cornerback Coby Bryant only played two defensive snaps in the first game of his career and ended up allowing a 67-yard touchdown on one of the two. I kind of feel like I was not perceived as the player I think I am, and I have to go out there and show it. Seattle lost starting safety Jamal Adams likely for the season after he suffered a serious knee injury in the first quarter. Denver had three red zone possession in the second half and came away with just three points thanks to two fumbles near the goal line. “It was obvious how much they wanted to win the game,” Seattle coach Pete Carroll said on his radio show on KIRO-AM on Tuesday.

Also, I don't think it was the wrong decision. During his time in the Pacific Northwest, he guided the franchise into eight postseasons, including two Super Bowl appearances and one championship win in 2014.
