What we need in Hollywood, in books and in plays and in music, is more positive depictions of Hawaiians— more chances for Kānaka Maoli to dream a happy future for themselves. The Hawaiian sovereignty movement, present in [The Thirty Meter Telescope](https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2019/aug/16/hawaii-telescope-protest-mauna-kea) protests on Mauna Kea and the Crisis at Kapūkakī [protests of the Navy's petroleum contamination](https://www.hawaiipublicradio.org/local-news/2022-03-04/red-hill-fuel-in-water-deepens-native-hawaiians-distrust-of-military) of water, demands deoccupation of Hawai`i. Erasure of Kānaka Maoli began as early as Captain Cook's arrival in 1778, and spread through the 1800s as United States businessmen worked to establish a Though 21st century martial law is couched under the veil of statehood, Hawai`i's people are now subject to erasure at both the hands of the military and civilian police, who disproportionately target Kānaka Maoli and residents of color. [Mike White](https://www.vulture.com/article/the-white-lotus-finale-mike-white-interview-departures-ending.html) claims it does—in erasing local and Kānaka Maoli characters from the narrative, The White Lotus supports popular culture's remaking of the Indigenous image as dependent on what Trask calls the "hostage economy" of tourism. It contributes to "the obliteration rather than incorporation of Indigenous peoples"—what Trask identifies as one of colonialism's main goals. [critique of white American privilege](https://www.refinery29.com/en-us/2021/08/10640659/the-white-lotus-review-the-limits-of-white-self-critique) that was at best a failed satire and at worst [a harmful show](https://www.gawker.com/culture/the-white-lotus-wasnt-a-bad-satire-it-was-just-a-bad-show). In Haunani-Kay Trask's book, From a Native Daughter: Colonialism and Sovereignty in Hawai`i, she calls on theorist Frantz Fanon to talk about the colonial project in Hawai`i from which shows like The White Lotus stem. In the first moments of The White Lotus, I was comforted. [Honolulu Police Department's data](https://www.civilbeat.org/2020/06/what-implicit-bias-looks-like-in-hawaii/) shows that on average 73.3 percent of people who experienced use of force by police officers were people of color, with 32.7 percent being Kānaka Maoli or Pacific Islander.

“The White Lotus” is proving to be the hothouse flower of the Emmys.\n\nWith the evening underway for nearly two hours, the HBO limited series had already nabbed awards in every category it was nominated in, including supporting actor and actress, writing and directing.\n\nMike White, creator of the HBO series, comes from an eclectic entertainment background, writing 2003's “School of Rock” but also appearing as a contestant on the reality show “Survivor.” In his acceptance speech for writing, he expressed his love for his work.\n\n“Don’t come for me–don’t vote me off the island, please,” he said.\n\nSo far the show has nine Emmys, including five from the Creative Arts Emmys held last week.\n\nThe blistering social satire, a dramatic comedy set at the fictional White Lotus resort in Hawaii, came into the evening with 20 Emmy nominations, one of the highest tallies for any show. Eight of the 14 nominations in the supporting actor and actress races for limited series were for “White Lotus” cast members.\n\nJennifer Coolidge, who played a tragi-comic singleton, picked up the award for best supporting actress.
