Shigeru Miyamoto Accidentally Trolled Everyone During The Big ... (Kotaku)

Tuesday's Nintendo Direct was a much-hyped affair, with a whopping 40 minutes dedicated to the Japanese company's portable console and its games.

Everyone started holding their breath for the possibility of maybe hearing Chris Pratt do an Italian accent, and instead they heard about a franchise that has been on life support for years and was never that popular to begin with. The dude has always been a little offbeat, which is exactly what’s equipped him to design some of the most memorable games of all time. That, and Pikmin has always been close to the man’s heart. The silver lining here though is that Miyamoto did indeed have some actual news to share: Pikmin 4 is coming in 2023. And it kind of makes sense: Thanks to the way the Direct was constructed, his appearance almost felt like a fake-out. Franchises like Zelda, Metroid, and Super Mario are all older than that, but he would never remind people that Nintendo is still working on them, that would be absurd. [Miyamoto somehow said that it was “nearing completion” seven entire years ago](https://www.kotaku.com.au/2015/09/nintendo-announces-pikmin-4-in-the-weirdest-way/). “This has always been what interested and excited me about the medium: not perfecting the old but discovering the new.” The thing is, even if you weren’t expecting news about, say, a new Nintendo Switch model or BotW 2, for whatever reason, for a brief moment it seemed like Miyamoto had something big to say. He introduced the segment by telling people the Pikmin series is 20 years old, but the company is “still” working on it. Most people kept their expectations somewhat in check for this, because Nintendo said that the event would largely focus on products coming out this holiday season. Lately he’s been focused on theme parks because it makes him feel like he’s doing something new again, and it’s just familiar enough to designing video games to spark excitement.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom Has Fans Convinced ... (Kotaku)

Fans are speculating that the new Zelda title might've struck a bit too close to home for UK citizens in mourning.

While the whole world has been notified of the death of a person with a substantial connection to a bloody history of imperialism and colonialism, Zelda fans had to wait until the end of today’s Nintendo Direct presentation to get more info on the upcoming sequel to 2017’s critically acclaimed Breath of the Wild. Nintendo UK’s Twitter account [shared the conference](https://twitter.com/NintendoUK/status/1569703322202030082) on [its own YouTube channel](https://youtu.be/DFRtA67SqVE) as a video on demand after the presentation was streamed on other accounts. A peek at the comments on this video, which are filled with the baseless speculation about the Zelda title and the death of the queen, perhaps provide a glimpse of what Nintendo might’ve been hoping to avoid in a live chat segment. Video game essayist Chris Franklin even sketched out a hypothetical scenario of the decision-making process: It’s that very title that’s leading many down the path of speculation, wondering if perhaps the name would’ve hit a sour note with those who are mourning last week’s reminder that royalty, despite what they want you to think, are mere mortals. The celebration wasn’t had everywhere, however, as Nintendo UK, per its

Nintendo Direct was dominated by farming simulation games (Polygon)

Tuesday's Nintendo Direct was heavy on one genre: The role-playing farming life simulator. There's Harvestella, Story of Seasons, Fae Farm, and Rune Factory ...

Story of Seasons, on the other hand, is a classic that’s — yes — focused on farming, but puts a ton of emphasis on relationship building and family life. But I couldn’t disagree more — each of these games has a really interesting spin on the genre. Before we turned to tending-and-befriending in New Horizons as the pandemic separated us, people were enjoying the chill repetition of everyday farm life in [Stardew Valley](https://www.polygon.com/game/stardew-valley/38933) and others. "In Legend of Zelda Tears Of the Kingdom, you'll grow your own crops, befriend the locals, and wait... Stardew Valley built on that, and now we’re entering a new era — farming sims appear to be taking over once again, and the genre’s fans are thrilled. Nintendo is making it absolutely clear that it’s time to leave the city and tend to our crops.
