Michael Keaton Nets First Emmy For Lead Turn In 'Dopesick ... (Deadline)

Michael Keaton captured the Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Anthology Series or Movie for his performance in "Dopesick."

In addition to harking back to his childhood and striking serious notes, Keaton flashed some of the comedy chops that made him a star. “We kind of lived out in the country” in Pennsylvania, he explained, and the device became his portal to a different world as the medium was beginning to sweep across the world in the late-1950s and early 1960s. As part of a bankruptcy process for the company last year, the family reached a legal settlement insulating them from liability. Keaton plays a doctor in a small Appalachian town coming to terms with the consequences of prescriptions he wrote for OxyContin, which salespeople touted as a miracle pain reliever. “I watched all of the cowboy shows and especially the comedies, and all the gangster shows and I fell in love with it.” He recalled re-enacting what he saw on the screen and the importance of how his parents and siblings reacted to him. In particular, he recalled his father winning a raffle when he was a grade-schooler, bringing home the prize of a black-and-white television set.

“Dopesick” Author Beth Macy Talks About Her New Book, “Raising ... (Washingtonian)

With her new book “Raising Lazarus," Beth Macy aims to destigmatize opioid medication-assisted treatment in hopes of humanize addicts.

The book was so personal to me, and I had been so attached—especially to Tess Henry, who was the main protagonist of the last half of the book—that I just wanted to make sure they didn’t screw it up. But you have to do a special training and get a special DEA license to prescribe the treatment for an OxyContin addiction. We still are much more likely to incarcerate a person with this medical illness than we are to treat them as a person with a treatable medical problem. At the end of reporting, I started hearing that crime was getting really bad and a lot of it was drug-related. You wouldn’t believe the hundreds of people who reached out to us to say, “I watched your show, and for the first time in three years I called my addicted kid—who I was just disgusted with—because I finally understood that it wasn’t just him being a bad person.” So that’s the thing about prestige TV. So I embedded with these two families—the kid himself and the mom of the kid who died. He wanted to make the show sort of a procedural drama, a crime-investigation story. And that makes other elements of the story palatable in some ways, because you have these good guys who are fighting to put the bad guys away—which, by the way, really happened. It was 2012, and I was in the process of finishing Factory Man. So I found another book to write, a racial-history book called Truevine. We spoke with Macy by phone—about the opioid crisis but also about her precarious upbringing in small-town Ohio, her efforts to tell underdog stories, and her alarm at the decline of the news business, which she watched firsthand as a reporter for the Roanoke Times from 1989 to 2014. When I was growing up, there were jobs, but the economy was still really tough if you were poor.
