The Breakdown: Mink's Five Thoughts on Ravens' Blowout of Jets (BaltimoreRavens.com)

The Ravens' defensive upgrades paid immediate dividends as two youngsters shined. Devin Duvernay is the No. 2 receiver the Ravens need, but they have to run ...

Still, this underscores the need for Stanley to return to game action soon. That may still be the case, but it has to be better than that for this offense to have sustained success. After a healthy preseason, the Ravens suffered two tough injuries in their season-opener. Versatility Patrick Mekari filled in admirably and the offensive line play actually seemed to improve in the second half. Now it's Duvernay's time to shine as a starter and he showed Sunday he's ready to step up to the challenge. The roll was dry early on as Baltimore mustered just 11 rushing yards on seven carries in the first half. But from the Jets' first drive of the game, Madubuike was dominating inside. Devin Duvernay shushed the concern about the Ravens' wide receiver situation, at least for now, with two touchdown catches. Queen and Madubuike, two of the Ravens' top three picks from 2020, were all over the field hammering the Jets offense. Flacco was under duress from Justin Houston on the edge, Justin Madubuike up the middle, Patrick Queen from every angle, and others. Queen has always had the tools, and now he looks sure of how to use them. The defense forced two fumbles and recovered one.

[Ronnie Stanley](https://www.espn.com/nfl/player/_/id/2980153/ronnie-stanley), was carted off the field with what was initially called a left ankle injury but Harbaugh later confirmed was a torn Achilles tendon. [Breece Hall](https://www.espn.com/nfl/player/_/id/4427366/breece-hall) fumbled after a 7-yard catch that would've been a first down. He was called for offensive pass interference on a play during which Ravens cornerback [Kyle Fuller](https://www.espn.com/nfl/player/_/id/16715/kyle-fuller) injured his left knee and needed help off the field. New York's defense held firm and Baltimore settled for [Justin Tucker](http://www.espn.com/nfl/player/_/id/15683/justin-tucker)'s 24-yard field goal to take a 3-0 lead. “From dropped passes to being loose with the football and missed kicks, this is a game, in my opinion, that we absolutely lost.” The [Baltimore Ravens](/nfl/team/_/name/bal/baltimore-ravens)' star quarterback certainly got off to a terrific start. Flacco, starting against the team with whom he won a Super Bowl, was ineffective and wasn't helped by a few drops and lousy pass protection. “We were getting back into the swing of things.” 11 attacks — the site of the former World Trade Center just across the Hudson River — played a factor. Baltimore general manager Eric DeCosta said in a statement Friday the sides would keep working on an extension after the season. Jackson denied the ESPN story when asked after the game by the outlet's reporter whether he turned down a $250 million guaranteed contract: “With a guarantee?

Ravens vs. Jets Final: Report Card, Grades (Baltimore Beatdown)

After a sluggish start in the first half, the Baltimore Ravens offense sprung to life with a three-touchdown outing from quarterback Lamar Jackson.

A concern moving forward will be the health of the unit. The linebacker showed significant development against the Jets, making open-field tackles, hanging in tough in coverage and generating pressure on his blitzes. However, like the defensive line, this is a superior problem than the inverse. But, it’s far better to have some issues in the run game than it would be to struggle getting after the quarterback. Just about as great of a game as you could ask for from the big guys up as a pass rushing unit. As for pass protection, the Ravens looked solid, giving Jackson time to throw it around the field near and far. In the second half, Jackson got back to his traditional Week 1 form with two touchdowns to wide receiver Devin Duvernay and a 55-yard bomb to a wide open Rashod Bateman. That much was apparent as the Ravens started with Kenyan Drake for two series, then going to Mike Davis for the following and then giving Justice Hill a series afterward. Jackson and the offense were off to a slow start in the first half, with Jackson taking shallow completions with his wide receivers. But three flashes of lightning from said cloud in the form of Duvernay and Bateman have quelled the concern. The holes weren’t generated and the struggles were apparent. Jackson did throw an interception late, his first in four Week 1 games as the starting quarterback.

Flacco's deal was set to expire, and he led Baltimore to a Super Bowl title before becoming one of the highest-paid players in the NFL. He was the unanimous NFL MVP in 2019. Jackson remains on the books in 2022 for just $23.016 million under the fifth-year option on his rookie contract. “We greatly appreciate how he has handled this process and we are excited about our team with Lamar leading the way. However, Jackson was angling for his extension to be fully guaranteed at signing, similar to the one signed by Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson. The contract would have paid the former MVP a higher average annual salary than the deals signed be fellow quarterbacks Russel Wilson and Kyler Murray earlier in the summer.

As for Fuller, the Ravens have two rookies in Jayln Armour-Davis and Damarion Williams who can step up and play more snaps if needed. He was held his own at the right tackle position last year and left tackle was his main spot in college. All-purpose defensive back Ar’Darius Washington is on the practice squad and can play safety, cornerback or nickel in a pinch, should Peters not be ready to go next week as well. They also have rookie Daniel Faalele, who can step in at right tackle if they want to move Morgan Moses over to the left side. Two repeat tears on the same leg is certainly not a good sign.

The Ravens took advantage of a bang-up Jets offensive line that was missing their starting tackle Duane Brown. However, Baltimore had to settle for a 24-yard field goal by Justin Tucker after Jackson's attempted pass on third down was batted down by Quinnen Williams, who manhandled rookie center Tyler Linderbaum. Cornerback Kyle Fuller had to leave the game with a knee injury. Baltimore extended the lead to 17-3 on a 17-yard touchdown pass from Jackson to Duvernay with 7:14 left in the third quarter. Jackson then found Duvernay for a 25-yard touchdown on the next play and the Ravens led 10-3 with 3:45 left in the second quarter. "We were getting off the field, we were doing a good job of stopping the run. As for the scoring plays, Reed said, "We gave up three explosives as a defense, so we can do better on that," adding of the Ravens' day, "24 points or whatever they had was too much. So we just did a good job communicating and running and hitting." "We just kept it simple, man, kept to our script, everybody running to the ball," CB D.J. We gave up three explosives, but overall the defense did a really good job of going blow-for-blow with those dudes."

“It felt good to get in the game mode, get things going, show the work I’ve put in this offseason and training camp,” Duvernay said. Duvernay made a nice release off the line of scrimmage, then outfought Hall to make a leaping catch despite contact and tight coverage. [Lamar Jackson]is bothered by the fact that he didn’t get a new contract, he definitely didn’t show it against the Jets. The running game is the bread and butter of this offense, which means the Ravens have to start knocking defenders off the ball. Cornerback Marlon Humphrey is better playing inside than outside because he is physical and one of the better tacklers on the team. Baltimore seems to have found a good center field-type safety in Marcus Williams, who led the team in tackles with 12 and also intercepted a pass. Rookie center Tyler Linderbaum had a solid first game, especially snapping in the shotgun formation, but he didn’t get much movement at the point of attack. [Mike Davis]also almost coughed up a ball late in the third quarter, with the Jets still within striking distance. Baltimore has ranked third, first, first and second in the NFL in rushing yards since drafting Jackson, and he’s clearly been a big part of that. The team accumulated only 8 first-half rushing yards, the fewest in the Jackson era. Then [Rashod Bateman], who had an ugly drop earlier, dusted the Jets secondary to haul in a 55-yard dime from Jackson. [Justin Houston]continually crashed the edge, and [Justin Madubuike]collapsed the pocket from the middle.
