For Openers, Carr Has Been a Pretty Good Closer (Sports Illustrated)

Derek Carr of the Las Vegas Raiders has proven to be successful in opening games for the Silver and Black.

Last season, Carr completed 34-of-56 passes for 435 yards and two touchdowns, including a 31-yard score to wide receiver Zay Jones with 3:38 remaining in overtime to give the Raiders a 33-27 victory over the Baltimore Ravens in the opener at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas. The Las Vegas Raiders lead the all-time series 67-56-2 over the Chargers in their 125 meetings dating back to 1960. LA also signed Gerald Everett, who gives Herbert another weapon in his arsenal. They’ve added a squad of high-end reinforcements to the defensive side of the ball. The Chargers have been a media darling for the entire offseason. Graham’s defenses have been schematically impressive since he became the Dolphins’ DC in 2019. The Las Vegas Raiders and Los Angeles Chargers both drastically changed over the offseason.

Staff predictions for Chargers vs. Raiders, Week 1 (Chargers Wire)

The Los Angeles Chargers kick off the 2022 regular season against the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday, Sept. 11 at 1:25 p.m. PT.

The game should be high-scoring and close down to the wire. I think it’ll be a closer game than Chargers fans would like, but the Bolts will come out on top. On the other side of the ball, Justin Herbert should have a nice opportunity to carve up the Raiders secondary, assuming the right side of the offensive line holds up against Maxx Crosby and Chandler Jones. It’s the ultimate rematch as the Chargers and Raiders face off in the season opener on Sunday. On paper, the Chargers have more talent, and I think Joey Bosa and Khalil Mack prove to be the difference. Jackson doubtful, the Chargers are going to have to rely on their pass rush getting home against a questionable Raiders offensive line to limit the damage Derek Carr, Davante Adams, and the rest of Vegas’ passing game can do.

Behind Enemy Lines: 4 questions with Raiders Wire (Chargers Wire)

The Los Angeles Chargers and Las Vegas Raiders are about to duke it out in a divisional showdown to open up the season on Sunday afternoon.

Adams is also considered the best route runner in the league, and with the offensive line as shaky as it is, expect some quick passes to Adams with his ability to shake defenders quickly off the line. Jacobs will likely get more carries than the others, but overall he will share with Brandon Bolden and the two rookies. As for the offense, I wouldn’t expect it to change too much schematically.

Live coverage: Chargers answer Raiders' touchdown drive, stay up ... (Las Vegas Sun)

The AFC West rivals Las Vegas Raiders and LA Chargers reprise the instant-classic game they staged at the conclusion of last season to welcome this season.

No one is expecting a straight sequel of the 35-32 overtime victory that lifted the Raiders to the playoffs and sent the Chargers home for the offseason, though. The fourth-year cornerback out of Temple was a distant third most-celebrated acquisition of the offseason after Adams and Jones, but he will play as big a role as those two Pro Bowlers against the Chargers. Carr took a beating in a pair of matchups against the Chargers a year ago, getting sacked a combined seven times as part of 13 total quarterback hits. Los Angeles just had the first touchdown of the game off an 8-play, 67-yard drive that concluded with Herbert finding fullback Zander Horvath for a 1-yard touchdown on 3rd-and-goal. Herbert nearly scrambled in a touchdown, but opted to slide at the four-yard line where he took a late hit from cornerback Nate Hobbs. The Chargers lead 17-3 at halftime after a pair of Justin Herbert touchdown passes. Carr threw two touchdown passes, one to Brandon Bolden in the third quarter and one to Adams in the fourth. The Chargers’ lead is cut to 17-10 after Carr connected with running back Brandon Bolden for an 18-yard touchdown to cap a 5-play, 75-yard drive. Las Vegas converted a fourth-down play to receiver Hunter Renfrow, his first catch of the day, but went backwards from there. Carr threw an interception on passes intended for each one of them in a 24-19 loss to the Chargers Sunday afternoon at SoFi Stadium. It was a three-yard touchdown for Adams, giving him nine catches for 129 yards on the day. Sacks were just as big of an issue for Carr and the Raiders’ offensive line, as he took five on the day including three by former Raider and close friend Khalil Mack.

Chargers vs Raiders final score: Las Vegas falls short, 24-19 (Silver and Black Pride)

An instant review of Week 1 as the Raiders lose to the Chargers.

The Cardinals were smoked by the Kansas City Chiefs at home Sunday. Running back/special team Brandon Bolden was hurt in the fourth quarter with a hamstring injury. It’s not the end of the world, but it’s not a great start to a tough season in the AFC West. The Raiders are already pretty thin in the secondary. It was a tough start to the McDaniels era. The star-studded matchup ended as a 24-19 loss for Josh McDaniels’ new-look Raiders.

Raiders winners and losers in 24-19 defeat vs. Chargers (Raiders Wire)

The Raiders' new-look offense got off to a hot start on Sunday against the Chargers, as wide receiver Davante Adams caught multiple passes from quarterback ...

They’ll have a chance to right the ship against the Cardinals at Allegiant Stadium next Sunday. But in the end, the line failed him again, as the Chargers ended the day for the Raiders offense with consecutive QB sacks and forced fumbles. But for a coach that is supposed to be an offensive genius, that’s a terrible look. Right now, the questions surrounding that unit are louder than ever, and that’s saying quite a bit. And in the fourth quarter, Adams made a gorgeous touchdown grab to tighten the score. The personnel (and scheme) is different, however, as Las Vegas acquired EDGE player Chander Jones and handed him a hefty contract. Carr also had two unsightly fumbles to end the game, each on a QB sack allowed by his offensive line. Carr looked shook (understandably) until he got it together to bring the Raiders back late. In their defense, the Chargers boast a strong front seven, led by Khalil Mack, who had three of LA’s six QB sacks. Defensive end Maxx Crosby and defensive tackle Bilal Nichols deserve shoutouts, too, as they each made their presence felt up front, especially on a sequence in the second quarter. It was a positive sign for a unit with new players and a brand-new scheme. When Carr tried to lead them back, he threw two fourth-quarter interceptions (he had three overall), contributing to a 24-19 loss in coach Josh McDaniels’ debut.

NFL Week 1, Raiders-Chargers: 5 things we learned (Silver and Black Pride)

Carr struggles: It wouldn't be accurate to say Raiders' quarterback Derek Carr was awful Sunday. He had some moments (especially with new toy Davante Adams), ...

The Raiders had issues in coverage and the star pass-rush tandem of Maxx Crosby and Chandler Jones didn’t do enough. The Raiders’ offensive line had been a major story in the preseason and we got some clarity Sunday. Not all was lost on defense as the Raiders played pretty well against the run and got off the field when it needed to in the second half. The Raiders didn’t have a sack and that’s disappointing, especially after they committed so much money to Crosby (who played well as always) and Jones this offseason. We all saw this coming and the Raiders need to address this issue immediately. But every week is a new game plan based on the opponent. Now, the Raiders need to get tight end Darren Waller and Hunter Renfrow more involved. After the game, Carr shouldered the blame (he always does) and said he was too aggressive. He ended up with 10 catches for 141 yards with a touchdown. it’s a work in progress with Carr and McDaniels and he will settle down. It didn’t take long for Adams to make his presence be felt. He had had multiple turnovers in six of the past seven games.

'We beat ourselves today': Davante Adams' dynamic Raiders debut ... (Raiders.com)

The Raiders' five-time Pro Bowl addition finished with 10 catches, 141 yards and a touchdown.

But we turned the ball over the way that we did today and we still had the opportunity to go down there and win. I didn't end up winning the game with it, but it's still something that means a lot to me." The Pro Bowl receiver totaled 10 catches, 141 yards and a touchdown in his first game as Raider – the second-most receiving yards ever by a player in their Raiders debut. "I like the way our team fought," continued McDaniels on the second half comeback attempt. "Obviously, it's difficult to win when you lost the turnover margin the way that we did and give them opportunities. Despite a late comeback bid from the Silver and Black, the Chargers held on for the 24-19 victory.

Hopefully, Ekeler is granted more opportunity on Thursday against a Chiefs team that allowed 103 rushing yards in a 44-21 victory over the Cardinals. It was a peculiar lack of usage for the big-money receiver, especially after Keenan Allen left the game in the second quarter with a hamstring injury. Still, the lack of established talent in the Raiders’ secondary seemed to make for a good matchup for Williams. Edge defender Khalil Mack had three sacks, including a strip sack on 4th-and-8 that all but sealed the game for the Chargers. Williams was largely shut down in this one, only hauling in 2 passes for 10 yards, both of which came in the fourth quarter. Yes, Davante Adams finished with ten receptions for 141 yards and put Samuel in a blender more than a few times.

5 Takeaways: Mack, Defense Thrive Late in Win Over Raiders (Chargers.com)

Chargers new OLB makes statement with 3-sack game as Bolts defense comes up clutch on final drive.

"Bryce Callahan is one of the top inside defenders in the league, and he has been since 2015," Staley said. I know that taking the field with him, it's a great feeling, as a coach." Then, all of the receivers that had to step up when Keenan goes out, those four guys holding the rope for us, I thought that was really, really big in the game." He's capable of that," Staley said. We needed to be more consistent in the second half, but I thought the offensive line played really well today." "I'm sure if you watch the film, I'm sure we had some help on certain plays but there's going to be a time where you have to step up, and they did," Linsley added. It was a tough game," Staley said. "This game is going to be a good indicator of how tough and rugged this division is. "Just understanding what last year was with it being cut short and not being able to be myself on the field," Mack said. "He's an alpha, a dog, a leader in the locker room. "It's just one game," Mack said. He's the complete package and we're lucky to have him."

Khalil Mack helps revamped Chargers sack Raiders in opener (Los Angeles Times)

Khalil Mack missed most of last season but seems back at top speed with his new team. His three-sack game led the Chargers past the Las Vegas Raiders 24-19.

“You just look at the personnel and you have total confidence that, ‘Holy smokes, something good is about to happen.’ I think we had that belief today.” ... Jackson worked out before the game and appeared to be moving well. Carr was sacked five times, and the Chargers finished with six in all. Beginning his ninth year in the NFL, Mack, 31, is coming off a season in which he was limited to seven games for the Chicago Bears because of a foot injury. Though they recovered each, the Raiders also fumbled three times. Here are some of the game’s biggest moments. The veteran quarterback stepped forward to avoid Bosa and looked toward Adams as linebacker Kyle Van Noy — yet another free-agent signing — flew at him. “I’ve been around special players my whole career, and now he’s one of them,” Fox said. Chargers coach Brandon Staley called a scheme that had James and fellow defensive back Nasir Adderley doubling Adams. That’s when Joey Bosa and Morgan Fox — another free-agent addition — combined to sack Carr, Bosa causing a fumble that Las Vegas recovered. [Hernández: Justin Herbert continues to show why he’s the best QB in L.A. “It’s team ball, man,” Mack said.

Chargers Week 1 Recap: Bolts survive Raiders 24-19 behind ... (Bolts from the Blue)

Khalil Mack hushed the non-believers with three sacks against his former team.

Vegas failed on the two-point conversion which meant the Chargers held on to a 24-19 lead with 4:32 left in the game. Right out of the gate, Carr hit Adams for 12 yards and a first down. Despite leaving the game in the first half, Keenan Allen still finished with a team-high 66 receiving yards. Two plays later with the ball at the Chargers 18-yard line, running back Brandon Bolden beat linebacker Kyle Van Noy on a wheel route to haul in a perfect ball from Carr to put things back to within a score at 17-10. After the Chargers were forced into a three-and-out, Asante Samuel Jr. The Chargers defense found it’s groove in the middle of the second and nothing exemplified that more than Khalil Mack’s first two sacks as a Charger and Drue Tranquill’s acrobatic interception. But even then, the Chargers couldn’t turn it into points. The next Raiders offensive drive was also swiftly cut short before it ever really began thanks to Carr’s third interception of the day, one in which he threw into the arms of first-year bolt, Bryce Callahan. On a third-and-three with 2:43 left on the clock, Carr took the snap and bounced in the pocket, looking for a wideout downfield. All the first-year Charger had to do was continue running his feet which carried him backwards into the end zone. Bosa came barreling down from one side while defensive tackle Morgan Fox came from the other to meet at the quarterback. Dustin Hopkins would hit home on the 43-yard kick to give them an early 3-0 lead.

Chargers vs. Raiders 2022: Week 1 Snap Counts (Bolts from the Blue)

The five starting offensive linemen, Rashawn Slater, Matt Feiler, Corey Linsley, rookie Zion Johnson, and Trey Pipkins, along with quarterback Justin Herbert ...

Khalil Mack played 84% of the snaps and wrecked the Raiders for most of them, finishing with three sacks, three tackles for loss, and six tackles total. Speaking of safety, Derwin James and Nasir Adderley also played 100% of the snaps. CB3 Bryce Callahan played 79% of the snaps, meaning the Chargers were in nickel basically 80% of the time. It will be interesting to see if this continues as the Chargers only had a fullback play over 10% of the snaps in three games last season and had six games with no offensive snaps for the fullback. After missing most of the offseason recovering from surgery, Kenneth Murray lead the linebacker group with 71% of the snaps. A big part of that was the newcomers to the team. Newcomer Sony Michel played 24% of the snaps and did not look as good. Joshua Kelley played 27% of the snaps and looked, dare I say, good as RB2. In his absence, WR3 Josh Palmer played 75% of the snaps and kick returner DeAndre Carter played 37% of the offensive snaps. Gerald Everett had 66% of the snaps, while Tre McKitty also played 60%. At wide receiver we get some interesting numbers because Keenan Allen only played 33% of the snaps after coming down with a hamstring injury in the first half. Therefore, it will be interesting to see how some of the snap counts change over the first few games.
