Michigan football and Michigan State got big returns for nonconference payouts, but some other Big Ten football teams weren't as savvy in Week 2.
[[email protected]](mailto:[email protected]). Next up, Oklahoma, which is Southeastern (Conference)-bound, but not for a few years. Of those, they’re 2-2 against the Cougars (1-1 each against BYU and Wazzu) and 54-2 against everyone else. (Actually, Northwestern is 0-7 all-time in hoops against Duke.) The Spartans’ last visit to Seattle came in 1970, when the Huskies were a member of the then-Pac-8. (Forget joking about this being a basketball score: The Boilermakers have faced the Sycamores in hoops three times in the past decade, all wins with a total winning margin of 50 points.) The Golden Gophers’ “Row The Boat”-ing this week was also on the cheap side: Just $450,000 to the FCS-level Leathernecks of Macomb, Illinois. The Buckeyes are also following the “get what you pay for” mantra: $1.8 million this week to the Red Wolves and $1.8 million next week to Toledo. And finally, we have the two Michigan schools: The Spartans and Wolverines broke the bank to the tune of $3.4 million — $1.5 million and $1.9 million, respectively — to thrash Akron and Hawaii by a combined 108-10 score Saturday. The 45-42 loss to a member of the Sun Belt Conference (Frost’s second in five seasons) that went 3-9 last season cost the Huskers of Corn $1.423 million. (They’re still ineligible for the Misery Index, though.)
A lack of sacks was the only flaw in Michigan football's defensive performance on Saturday night against Hawaii.
The first two games of Michigan’s season will be remembered for Harbaugh’s unorthodox approach to the quarterback competition. That the coaches engendered such hustle and aggression from their players against a bottom-tier opponent bodes well for bigger games to come. But Henning’s four other punt returns totaled four yards as he made a questionable decision to field one late inside the 10 and danced across the field horizontally on another. His U-M counterpart, Brad Robbins, averaged 41 yards per punt for the Wolverines and placed one inside the 20. His touchdown pass to Johnson — a 17-yard bullet to the front corner of the end zone — featured a level of pocket presence that Harbaugh called “outstanding.” The trio of Wilson, Johnson and Bell combined for 189 receiving yards and three touchdowns. Yellen completed 13 of 36 passes for 113 yards, but 52 yards came in the fourth quarter after Michigan emptied its bench. Remarkably, the Rainbow Warriors had just one turnover: a failed fourth-down attempt on their final possession. The Rainbow Warriors began with a three-and-out in which consecutive carries for tailback Dedrick Parson netted three yards before quarterback Joey Yellen was nearly bisected by oncoming U-M pass rushers. Yellen’s throwaway clinched the first of eight consecutive possessions that ended with a punt — a stretch in which Hawaii gained 54 yards combined. McCarthy turned in a performance his head coach, Jim Harbaugh, described as “near-flawless” — completing 11 of 12 passes for 229 yards and three touchdowns in one half of work. The Wolverines gained 410 yards of offense in the first half to build a laughable 42-0 lead over an opponent getting paid $1.9 million for the trip to Ann Arbor. Corum was the high rusher with 88 yards on the ground. The Rainbow Warriors went just 7-for-19 on third downs and most of those third-down conversions came against the backups that the Wolverines had in during the second half. The Michigan defense was stifling against the porous Hawaii offense on Saturday. McCarthy had his first-career start on Saturday and the former five-star lived up to the hype. The maize and blue seemingly were able to do whatever they wanted on the offensive side of the ball. — Michigan is off to a 2-0 start to the 2022 season after its trashing of Hawaii on Saturday night.
Three takeaways from Angelique S. Chengelis of The Detroit News following Michigan's 56-10 victory over Hawaii in Week 2.
“It’s easy with a game like this to just not go into it like it’s Michigan State or Ohio State, but we treated today like it was a championship game. The point is, there are plenty of ways for a defense to “eat” — a reference to edge rusher He was voted a captain by his teammates and during the game he was among the first to congratulate J.J. There were boos after he took a couple sacks — assuming the boos weren’t directed at the offensive line, which was a major part of the problem both times — and boos after the interception when the game was well out of hand. “That’s just the nature of the business, playing football and quarterback. Defenses aren’t evaluated on sacks alone, although they fire up a crowd and the sideline.

The drive resulted in three and ended the hopes of a second consecutive shutout. In period two the offense jammed it down the throats of Hawaii without much resistance. Following an hour-long weather delay, the kickoff for the latest and 12th night game in Michigan stadium history, the Wolverines exploded out of the gates on Hawaii.

It started with a run wall; that’s what it looked like to me. As long as we finish the game with a ‘W,’ sacks don’t really matter that much.” The redshirt junior finished 4 of 6 passing for 26 yards and an interception, and the team did not score on his four drives. Doesn’t always go the way you want or hoped it would, even if you’re putting in all the work and doing everything you possibly can and doing a heck of a job. It’s the nature of the business, playing football and quarterback. A lot like that Monday night game that Colin played against the Bears, it looked a lot like what J.J. If really seen the right way, there’s a burden there and that’s been laid on you. We treated today like it was a championship game. It’s easy with a game like this just to not go into it like it is Michigan State of Ohio State, but we did. Corum rushed for 88 yards and a touchdown on nine carries. It was a great win. The Rainbow Warriors looked formidable early…but then the weather delay ended and the game started.
A few of these players will go on to become key contributors for Michigan, and this is just the first appearance in a long career. Despite the lopsided outcome, several Wolverines appeared in their first career games. The young quarterback looked decisive, confident and accurate throughout his first start — which lasted until halftime. Michigan came out to prove a point and emphatically did so across the board. Once decisively up 42-0 at halftime (Michigan’s largest halftime lead since Rutgers, 2016), the Wolverines unloaded their bench and coasted to victory in the second half. [Michigan Wolverines](https://www.maizenbrew.com) left no doubt under the lights last night as they trounced the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors by a final score of 56-10.
A former Michigan All-American certainly didn't mind seeing Notre Dame flop on Saturday.
Not a lot to say here as Notre Dame has been the biggest disappointment of any team just two games into the 2022 college football season. The loss puts the Irish at 0-2 on the young season, knocks them from any hopes of the College Football Playoff, and in all likelihood a New Year’s Six bowl game. If the Irish were in a conference they’d still potentially have a conference championship to play for, but as they’re independent they obviously don’t (something backers of remaining independent accept).
Michigan football established its dominance early in its 56-10 win over Hawaii, so much so that it completely took its foot off the gas in the second half.

So I got to be able to prove that I can be a leader, especially on the secondary. One of the guys I was most proud of was Jake Thaw. I was excited to see him in there the whole second half. I think he's gonna be one of the greatest, for sure. So for a long time, and just I guess to be on the other side of that tunnel is just emotion when I think about it. I was really happy. He's gonna be one of the greatest. I mean, he controlled the game. I never really knew, and I don’t even know what I did. I think somebody asked me, I don't know if it was like during camp of something, what I was gonna do when I scored. He controlled the whole game. He was prepared, ready to go.

Free Press sports writer Michael Cohen looks at which Michigan Wolverines who helped or hurt their stock in the blowout win over Hawaii.
On offense, where Henning has one reception for 7 yards and one carry for 6 yards in two games, he forced Harbaugh to call a timeout because he was improperly aligned — despite Bell’s best efforts to remedy the situation in real time. Henning put forth the best special teams play of the game with a 35-yard return in which his speed and vision flipped field position. But Green answered the bell with sticky coverage and a feistiness at the point of attack. He made a late decision to field a punt on the bounce at Michigan’s 7-yard line and later attempted to outrun Hawaii’s coverage units with horizontal movements that proved fruitless. “The way he’s been running and playing all camp, he’s off to a heck of a start for the season. He also hauled in a 17-yard, toe-dragging touchdown from McCarthy in the front corner of the end zone. He’s getting just better and better yards after the catch and as a runner. Henning: Saturday’s game showcased the full Henning experience on both special teams, where he serves as Michigan’s top punt returner, and on offense, where his contributions are mostly limited to occasional crossing routes, jet sweeps and reverses. 1 by the end of last season left Green as the odd man out with Vincent Gray entrenched on the other side. He was always willing to take the easy throw to a running back or tight end for underneath yardage in a demonstration of both football intelligence and athletic restraint. But more impressive were his poise in the pocket and overall decision making for a 19-year-old in his first start. Wilson showcased his open-field vision later in the first quarter by looping around the formation from right to left for a 21-yard score on well-timed reverse.

For the second week in a row, Michigan was pitching a shutout until very late in the game. It's clear that he's been working hard to be involved in the game plan and his speed is a big reason why it's working. It was reported that Edwards didn't return to the field after halftime as he was likely being treated in the locker room. In week one, he took a bubble screen 61 yards to the house. For the second week in a row, Wilson's speed has been a difference maker. Michigan held Hawaii to just 4.4 yards per carry and had only given up 61 yards passing midway through the third quarter.
