5 things to watch: Lions vs. Eagles (detroitlions.com)

Tim Twentyman takes a look at five things to watch in Sunday's Lions-Eagles matchup.

[Aidan Hutchinson](https://www.detroitlions.com/team/players-roster/aidan-hutchinson/), the No. Okudah and Oruwariye have a good test today against the talented Eagles receiving duo of DeVonta Smith and A.J. He got off to a slow start the first half of the year after coming over in a trade with the Rams, but during the second half of last season, after Campbell took over play calling and Ben Johnson was elevated to pass-game coordinator, Goff settled in nicely and played some pretty good ball down the stretch. Hutchinson was brought in to do just that, and the Lions think he'll help them be a better run defending team as well. The Eagles were the No. 2 overall pick by the Lions in this year's NFL Draft, said Thursday he's [ready to unleash the beast](https://www.detroitlions.com/news/rookie-hutchinson-ready-to-unleash-the-beast-in-nfl-debut-chark-reynolds). He missed nearly all of the 2021 season after suffering an Achilles injury Week 1. We'll know right away Week 1 if Glenn and the Lions pushed the right buttons this offseason to improve their run defense. Can he keep Fletcher Cox, Jordan Davis and the rest of the talented interior Eagles defensive front out of the backfield? The Eagles came into Ford Field and beat the Lions handily, 44-6, last season. The Lions think they're a much better team in the second season under general manager Brad Holmes and head coach Dan Campbell. The team has officially listed Ragnow as questionable to play, so we'll know 90 minutes before kickoff if he's in or out.

With the amount of youth throughout their ranks, it’s reasonable to expect that those players will be better in Year 2 under this coaching staff.

The Birds should be able to pound the rock. All told, there’s no good reason for the Eagles to lose this one. The Lions could prove to be dangerous early on. He’s probably going to turn the ball over at some point. Hurts should also be able to throw when necessary with no one really able to cover A.J. With that in mind, it’s easy to believe they can start the season 1-0 by beating the Lions in Detroit. There are some big questions that remain when it comes to the team’s starting quarterback, head coach, and defensive coordinator. The Eagles mostly took care of inferior opponents in 2021. One thing that can be said for that trio is that they know how to beat the bad teams. The addition of A.J. Brown could prove to be a game-changer for the offense. Howie Roseman did a great job of improving the Eagles’ roster this offseason.

Week 1 picks: Who the experts like in the Lions vs. Eagles matchup (Lions Wire)

Tracking the expert picks in the Week 1 matchup between the Detroit Lions and Philadelphia Eagles.

Of the other nine, seven chose the Eagles to fly to victory. IT didn’t matter, points or not; all eight pundits chose the Eagles to win outright and cover the 4-point spread. This will be more competitive than last year’s 44-6 Philly rout, but it’s a brutal opening draw for Dan Campbell’s Lions to try and get their resurgence off the ground. Note that three of the predictions here had the Lions covering the spread but losing outright. Six of those chose the Eagles. The Detroit Lions are one of several home underdogs in NFL Week 1.

But, on paper, the Eagles are the better team. It will be up to them to keep the fans engaged for all four quarters. I am very intrigued by what Ben Johnson's offense is going to look like in the regular season. The Philadelphia Eagles pose a test with both their speed and physicality. Detroit can and will compete. Detroit Lions vs. Philadelphia Eagles game predictions: Will it be a ... (Detroit Free Press)

Free Press sports writers offer their predictions for the Detroit Lions season opener on Sunday against the Philadelphia Eagles at Ford Field.

The pick: Eagles 31, Lions 24. The Lions stay competitive but come up short. The pick: Eagles 24, Lions 21. Jared Goff gets his first crack at showing his much-talked-about improvement against a defense that ranked 10th last year and spent three of its first four draft choices this year on that side of the ball, including tackle Jordan Davis, the 13th overall pick. I don’t expect Philadelphia to have nearly the same kind of success it had running the football last season, but the Eagles are a more talented team and that’s enough to give them the edge in Week 1. [The Lions have not forgotten the butt-kicking they took from the Eagles last fall](https://www.freep.com/story/sports/nfl/lions/2022/09/06/detroit-lions-motivated-embarrassing-loss-philadelphia-eagles-2021/65473692007/), with assistant head coach Duce Staley telling reporters Friday, “it would be real good to go out there and smack them in the mouth a little bit” as payback.

Eagles QB Jalen Hurts' Week 1 gameday outfit is absolute fire (NBC Sports Chicago)

Eagles football has finally arrived, and quarterback Jalen Hurts clearly had his Week 1 outfit prepared because he brought straight heat to Detroit.

Last season Hurts opened things up with a dynamo Week 1 performance against the Falcons: 27-of-35, 264 yards, 3 TDs, and seven rushes for 62 yards. The Eagles' starting quarterback showed up to the Birds' Week 1 season opener in Detroit against the Lions sporting an absolute heater of an outfit, dressed head-to-toe in red and looking ready to drop a 50-burger on Dan Campbell's squad. The saying is "look good, play good" and if that holds true, we're in for a real treat from Jalen Hurts this afternoon.

Only four teams had fewer takeaways last season than the Eagles, a red flag that turned the offseason into a mission to add defensive playmakers.

And I just honestly trust the whole room a little bit more.” They figure to score enough points to force the opposition to play catch-up, and that provides the defense more opportunities for takeaways. The goal is to win the takeaway battle. “I think it’s letting them play a little bit more,” Gannon said. Most of the offseason attention on the Eagles has gone to Hurts and the offense, which added a top talent in wide receiver A.J. The goal is to get takeaways. Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts can confirm that Reddick is a master of the strip sack. The upgrades continued with rookie defensive tackle Jordan Davis (at 6-6, 345), who can occupy a depth chart worth of blockers or, the Eagles hope, drive the center into the lap of the quarterback. Watt, who led the league with 22.5 sacks, Robert Quinn (15 sacks), Michah Parsons (13) and Matt Judon (12.5). White registered 89 tackles last season with the Los Angeles Chargers, ninth among linebackers. “Everything right now is only on paper,” Reddick said. “You guys saw there are certain games where we played lights out and certain games where we didn’t.

Eagles overreactions: Why A.J. Brown might be... too good? (NBC Sports)

If you're DeVonta Smith, it probably feels that way. Smith's rookie year was uneven but ultimately productive, and Eagles fans came away from his first 18 games ...

We heard so much during the offseason about how he would benefit from being in the same offensive system for a second year, how he would be able to step his game up with an improved supporting cast. I know it's just Week 1 and the majority of the Eagles' starters didn't really get a preseason, but I didn't love what I saw from Jonathan Gannon's defense and their tackling. James Bradberry whiffed on a tackle on the first drive of the game to spring D'Andre Swift on a massive 48-yard run, an ugly first moment from the new Eagle. I need Gannon to be better, both in coaching and in strategy, or we'll have some problems down the line. The team is still gelling. All I know is what I saw Sunday, and it was perfectly fine. He takes a little too long to make decisions. Smith dropped his first target of the game, an easy play that should've been a catch on the left sideline in the first quarter. Against the Lions, it won't burn you. Between Brown as the clear cut WR1, Dallas Goedert as a borderline elite tight end option, and Jalen Hurts' ability to create with his feet... I just don't love the situation for Smith. Hurts only targeted him one time over the next two quarters, and there were long periods of time when I simply forgot that Smith was on the field.

Live updates: Lions trail Eagles in fourth quarter of season opener (The Detroit News)

Follow along here for live updates from Detroit News contributor Sean Reider as the Lions open their season against the Eagles.

Q2 15:00: Another 3rd and 5 to start the second quarter and Hurts hits Brown for a short pass over the middle. Q1 8:42: After Jalen Hurts rushed for a first down with an 11-yard keeper, Detroit brought the heat at the line of scrimmage to force two frantic incompletions and a false start. Q2 12:56: Fourth and goal for the Eagles and they elect to go for it once again. Q2 7:35: A Lions penalty (12 men on the field) backs Detroit up to their own six-yard line and Hurts follows up with a keeper to the outside for five yards. Q1 7:10: Eagles elect to go for it on 4th and 5 but Amani Oruwariye is on top of Hurts' pass to A.J. Q2 10:17: Eagles driving with relative ease, completing a pass to Dallas Goedert for a first and a subsequent nine-yard run from Myles Sanders to set up 3rd and 1. Brown splitting inside for a short pass and he falls into the endzone after the catch for a touchdown to cap off a 14-play scoring drive. Q2 6:26: Facing 2nd and 16, Jared Goff uncorks a short pass to Hockenson...only for Kyzir White to tip into the hands of James Bradberry for an interception. Q2 2:00: On the seven-yard line, Jamaal Williams takes the handoff and barrels ahead into a mass of Eagles linemen for no gain. Then, the Eagles offensive line stood tall under Detroit's pass rush and Hurts made the most of it, lofting a deep ball to Brown for a 54-yard gain to put Philadelphia four yards away from another touchdown. Two personal fouls called on Tracy Walker III after Hurts slipped around the edge to convert on 3rd and 5, Walker hit him late and he then threw a punch after Dallas Goedert and Zach Pascal stepped up to defend their quarterback. Lions defense followed up by corralling Hurts on second down before Austin Bryant swatted another quick pass to force a punt and get the Lions off the field.

The Eden Prairie football team honored their past and took a glimpse into their future Friday night at Aerie Stadium.

Fazi connected with Walden and senior wide receiver Michael Gross, setting the table for senior Dominic Heim’s touchdown from 7 yards out and a 38-0 lead. Senior Noah Bonin intercepted a Farmington pass for the Eagles’ third turnover of the first half. The resounding advantage following Gross’s touchdown provided an opportunity for many on the roster to see game action. Moments later, Walden ran it in from the three for a 7-0 Eden Prairie lead. The Eagles lead 32-0 at the intermission. Senior defensive end Chiddi Obiazor was a one-man wrecking crew, blocking one Farmington pass and moments later stripping the ball away for another turnover. “I would say we’re bruisers,” said Sather, a senior, when asked about the effectiveness of the offensive line. “That changed the complexion of everything in the game. But it was special teams that set the tone following the game’s first series. Head Coach Mike Grant’s 1992 team was introduced in a ceremony before the Eagles clashed with Farmington. Logan Thomas wasn’t sure if he would be able to return this week, but gave Week 2 as a target if he had to sit out the opener. What happens with Barkley is, I think, going to have as much to do with ownership as it is with Schoen. A year before his contributions to the Rockstarz, the QB showed up unannounced to a 7-year-old cancer patient’s house, with $30,000 of his own money. But it is also valid to be hopeful until results on the field force you to change. If you want to be negative about the prospects, that is understandable. I would expect Philly to beat the Lions in the opener. Overall, the Lions were not a scary offense last year and if you stopped the backs and tight ends, you pretty much stopped them on offense. Lions vs. Eagles final score, highlights: Detroit's comeback comes ... (prideofdetroit.com)

Much like last year's home opener, the Lions fought to the end, but they fell just short of an improbable comeback vs. the Eagles.

On the very next play, the Eagles hit a 22-yard pass to Dallas Goedert, bringing the Eagles to the 1-yard line. The Lions pulled a nifty fake double screen on the first play of the final quarter, and Swift took it all the way down to the 1-yard line. The Eagles would make the chip-shot field goal to make it a two-score game at halftime. The Lions offense kept the chains moving the following drive with third-down pickups of 16 from Swift on the ground and 13 from Chark through the air. The Lions came out of the break, rushed to the line, and gave Swift the ball on a sweep that he easily took for the 7-yard score 21-14 Eagles. After dinking and dunking down the field for a couple plays, Tracy Walked picked up a nice sack on a blitz. For the second time, the Eagles went for it on fourth down. The Eagles took their first lead of the game on the next drive as the Lions defense looked gassed. Williams took the ball to the 1-yard line and the bounced off a defender to punch it in on second down. Things went from bad to worse for the offense on the next drive. Hockenson for just enough to pick up the first down and set up a first-and-goal from the 5. D’Andre Swift opened up the game with a huge, 50-yard run to get the Lions deep into Eagles territory and a couple runs from Jamaal Williams got them into the red zone.

Is the Eagles' defense worth worrying about? (PhillyVoice.com)

Yes, the Eagles won their season opener in Detroit on Sunday. But there were some pretty glaring issues on defense and you can be sure Jonathan Gannon and ...

Chark in the fourth, cutting a double-digit deficit to just a field goal. Gannon sort of implemented a bend-but-not-break defensive approach in his first season running the Philly defense. In their ugly but still successful outing in Week 1, the defense set a terrible tone for the season. The Eagles practiced a lot less than in previous years in training camp with essentially no live hitting. Surely, with the Lions offensive line hit by the injury bug early and all this talent, they'd be able to bring down a relatively immobile quarterback in Jared Goff right? But in the second half, the issues looked more consistent.

Hurts serves a dynamic factor in the option with his ability to cash in on explosive plays, but he absorbed multiple late hits against Detroit. But with Hurts entering his third year, in his second season as the full-time starter, the Eagles need him to make quicker decisions as a passer. The Eagles and Hurts insist he made noticeable strides as a passer throughout his offseason training. I got my hands on him, and made a play on the ball. Whether it be the lack of preseason playing time or a mix of first-game jitters, the Eagles were sloppy out of the gate. The Eagles gave up two picks to acquire the 2020 Pro Bowler in a draft-day trade with the Titans. I wanted to sit on the route, be physical with him, and run him out, back him out, and give him no room. Hurts delivered him a beautiful ball in stride, and Brown nearly ran it all the way in for a touchdown before he was brought down by a pursuing defender right outside the end zone. Brown displayed a “my ball” attitude throughout, and he frequently showed off his strength after hauling in the football. It was the type of moment that proved Brown was worth the expensive gamble. It didn’t take long, though, for Brown to silence the sold-out crowd on opening day. His Eagles teammates were forced to watch the Lions’ pregame entrances ahead of the season opener on Sunday afternoon at Ford Field.

First things first: An Eagles season-opener filled with momentous ... (PhiladelphiaEagles.com)

From the first touchdown to the first sack to the first game as an Eagle, here's 11 news and notes from Sunday's victory.

• Hurts got the first down that solidified the Eagles' win. • Brandon Graham and Fletcher Cox worked in tandem to get the first sack of the season. Graham recorded a team-high 3 pressures in his first game back from an Achilles injury that left him sidelined for all but two games during the 2021 campaign. • Kyzir White recorded his first tackle on the first defensive play of the game. He also recorded the most receiving yards in a single game by an Eagle with Hurts at the helm. • James Bradberry recorded the first interception of the Eagles' 2022 campaign. He took down Philadelphia native and Lions' rushing leader D'Andre Swift in the opening seconds of the game – it was his first of five tackles. Brown set a team record for most receiving yards in his first game as an Eagle. • Safety Marcus Epps led the defense in his first opening day start. • The game marked Hurts' first with the same playcaller (Offensive Coordinator Shane Steichen) for a consecutive year. But that's the mentality he has, and I'm grateful he has that mentality, because for all of us, it wasn't good enough." The roaring atmosphere proved to be an early challenge for the Eagles' offense – their least favorable drive was their first.

Detroit Lions defense falls flat in loss to Eagles: 'Got to be a lot better ... (Detroit Free Press)

Jalen Hurts had 90 yards rushing and the Philadelphia Eagles topped 200 yards rushing against the Detroit Lions for the second straight year.

The Lions gifted the Eagles three points late in the first half, when A.J. Brown beat Will Harris on a 54-yard deep ball one play after Campbell called a timeout following a sack with 54 seconds left; Harris was playing in place of Jeff Okudah, who was on the sideline with cramps. Brown and not for the [Detroit Lions](https://www.freep.com/sports/lions/). Hockenson turned his route up field, and he was booed by home fans after he overthrew an open Kalif Raymond in the fourth quarter. Goff, who had 88 yards passing late in the third quarter, finished 21 of 37 for 215 yards with two touchdowns. The Lions opened with a nine-play, 75-yard touchdown drive, highlighted by Swift’s 50-yard run, then failed to pick up a first down on their next four possessions. The Lions had six passes that could reasonably be considered drops and Goff seemed out of synch with his pass catchers part of the day. Hopefully we can attribute it to first-game stuff and hopefully next week, stuff like that isn’t happening. The Eagles gobbled up chunks of yards on the ground – they finished with 216 yards rushing, after running for 236 yards last October at Ford Field. “A lot of mental errors mostly, and stuff that could be cleaned up easily, but stuff that can’t happen on game day. Now, if we just take this whole approach where every week it’s like, well, we played and we lost by three, we lost by three, we lost by three then what are we doing?’ So we got to clean this up and we got to be better. And the offense – the team, really – walked off the field kicking itself over a multitude of missed plays and self-inflicted mistakes.

The Eagles' vaunted defense was lousy against the Lions, and ... (The Philadelphia Inquirer)

The Eagles' vaunted defense was lousy against the Lions, and Jonathan Gannon has lost any benefit of the doubt ... There were plenty of questions about Gannon's ...

Sunday was supposed to be the start of that process. It was easier to write off some of the criticism of Gannon last season as a product of the Eagles’ talent on defense and their opponents’ talent at quarterback. He meant the ones on offense. “In this league, on the road in your first game, we’ll take it any way we can get it.” This problematic showing on one side of the ball doesn’t just disappear, though. Save one of those errant Goff throws — one that Kyzir White deflected and that James Bradberry intercepted and returned 27 yards for a touchdown — the Eagles did little to stymie a Detroit offense that is closer to The Slowest Show on Turf than it is the reincarnation of the 1999 St. That was the Eagles’ mantra in the aftermath of Sunday’s game: Watch the film. And how long will it take for Haason Reddick to be the force he was supposed to be? But Goff isn’t in that class, and if the questions about Gannon and his soft-coverage approach weren’t answerable last year — was he having the Eagles play that way out of necessity, because their personnel was so poor, or out of his own preference? Why the Eagles sacked Jared Goff just once — on a play in which Goff happened to drop the snap. How long will it take a defense with five new starters to gain a better sense of communication and cohesion? Gannon and his defense placed more pressure on their own team’s offense than they did on the Lions’, forcing Nick Sirianni, play-caller Shane Steichen, and Jalen Hurts to be at their best just to keep the Lions at arm’s length. Big to win on the road.

Eagles observations: Sloppy defense, A.J. Brown balls out, and more (NBC Sports)

It wasn't the prettiest season-opening win you'll ever see, but the Eagles were able to do enough right on the road to open the 2022 campaign with a victory ...

Lions linebacker Derrick Barnes had his arms around Sanders and was about to stuff him for a loss, but Sanders showed toughness and grit busting away from Barnes and scooting down the field for one of the biggest plays of the day. And he became the first Eagle cornerback with a pick-6 on the road since Dimitri Patterson picked off Donovan McNabb at FedEx Field in that 59-28 game in 2010. They’ve been among the worst in the NFL in forcing turnovers the last four years, and to not just get a takeaway at a pivotal point in the game but turn it into seven points, that was encouraging. A lot of really sloppy play by the Eagles – two false starts, one offensive holding and one defensive holding, a neutral zone infraction, two 12 men on the field, two delay of games, a pass interference. But it was the kind of play that’s been missing for this team for a while. In a loud stadium, on the road, in the 20thstart of his career, he was just fine. Gainwell got the first series of the third quarter, and we didn’t see Sanders for a minute, then on his first snap back on the field since the second quarter – rested, fresh legs – he explodes for 24 yards. And that 24-yarder for a huge first down late in the fourth quarter was massive. And just how crazy is it that the Eagles got him for a mid-1st-round pick and a 3rd-round pick. The Eagles’ revamped secondary did a terrific job in coverage – Goff was a punchless 21-for-37 for 215 yards – but the run defense was embarrassing. The Lions – 19th in the NFL running the ball last year - ran for 181 yards Sunday, and even the slow-footed Goff converted a key third down with a 10-yard scramble on a 3rd-and-7 to set up the Lions’ third TD, and that just can’t happen. Not everything went right for the Eagles after that, but they showed a lot of character and resilience in bouncing back from what was really a disastrous start and holding on in the fourth quarter when the thing was on the brink of getting away from them.

They extended the lead to 31-14 with a Kenneth Gainwell 4-yard run in the third quarter. Hurts finding room to run (90 rushing yards) was a theme throughout the game for the Eagles, who recorded 216 rushing yards. Lions vs Eagles: Studs and Duds for Week 1 (Lions Wire)

Here are Lions Studs and Duds for the Detroit Lions season opener loss to the Philadelphia Eagles 38-35.

His actions put the Lions in a bad spot, especially with a safety group that was already in question, and as a captain of the team, those actions are inexcusable. The Lions had a few opportunities to get off the field, including at the end of the game, but the Lions were able to make the necessary tackles resulting in the Eagle icing the game. After the retirement of John Penisini, the Lions were strung on finding someone who could man the middle and looks to have found their guy in Buggs. If there was a frustrating performance from the Lions today, it was the lack of run defense, as the Eagles were able to run at will. Even though it was a vast improvement from last year, where they fell to the Eagles 44-6, they left too much on the field that could have turned the tide in the Lions favor. He started slow, leading the Lions to three straight three-and-outs and a pick-six, and looked uncomfortable from the start.

Jalen Hurts, A.J. Brown talk Eagles' win over the Lions (Bleeding Green Nation)

Plus Darius Slay and Brandon Graham give some insight into the defense's execution and areas they need to improve.

The veteran said that it was great to get back on the field, and even though they have stuff they need to clean up, a win is a win, so he’ll take it. While some people might point to the lighter training camp schedule and lack of preseason snaps for some of the issues on Sunday, Graham said they don’t make excuses and it was a priority to get and keep guys healthy heading into the season. Slay also said that they need to execute a lot better, especially at the end of the game. Hurts was also asked about some of the questionable hits that he took — and that he’s taken in the preseason —, but he isn’t worried about them. We talked about not riding waves of the game, being able to control what we can, and there were times when the execution wasn’t as we like it to be on both sides of the ball, but I think in the end what made the difference was we were resilient. Quarterback Jalen Hurts admitted that it was nice to see that even though they didn’t play up to their standard, they were still able to find a way to win.

Maybe this is a little harsh after a road win but the Eagles were sloppy on Sunday. That comes with Week 1 sometimes but the Eagles were penalized 10 times in the opener. The Eagles didn’t have any amazing plays on special teams but they made some solid ones. That’s probably to be expected in the first game of the season but it needs to get corrected. Brown, who had 8 for 64 and a touchdown. A bright spot was the play of rookie Jordan Davis, who can certainly stuff the run if no one else can. The Eagles’ expensive defensive line didn’t get much pressure on Jared Goff in this game with their only “sack” coming on a bad snap. We also saw a healthy dose of Jack Stoll in 12 personnel. It’s great that Brown was a monster in this game, but the Eagles will need to get their other wideouts, namely Smith, involved more going forward. The three backs combined for 147 scrimmage yards and three touchdowns. The Eagles’ quarterback had a really nice outing to start the season. He had 333 total yards, ran the offense effectively, protected the football and made some really impressive plays with his legs.

- It was a quiet day on kickoff returns for the Lions. It started with a 50-yard run on the first possession and continued through the fourth quarter until he finished with 144 yards rushing, and one touchdown and three receptions for 31 yards. All seven of the Eagles' kickoffs went into the end zone for touchbacks. The Eagles answered back after the Lions had scored on their possession with a 13-play, 75-yard drive to a tying TD. They simply cannot have another one of those seasons where they get in a big hole early. He had eight targets and six catches for 53 yards with one TD. "He can go to the house from anywhere," Campbell said. He had four targets and two catches for 11 yards. He rushed for 90 yards and a touchdown. He completed 18 of 32 passes for 243 yards, with no TDs or interceptions. Take nothing away from the Eagles. That loss made the then-winless Lions' record 0-8.

It’s the first game of the season, it’s a full game – now you’re in the real tempo, real NFL tempo against real dudes.” John McMullen is a contributor to PhillyVoice.com and covers the Eagles and the NFL for Sports Illustrated and JAKIB Sports. "He had complete control of what he was doing on out there today.” “He’s very slick,” Lions rookie linebacker Malcolm Rodriguez said of Hurts. The old-school "Philadelphia should be a run-first team" vs.

Eagles-Lions snap counts: Jordan Davis underutilized (Bleeding Green Nation)

OFFENSE · Usually a good thing when the starting QB and OL don't miss any snaps. · DeVonta Smith played the most of any wide receiver but only saw four targets ...

- Calcaterra, Jackson, and Blankenship were the most surprising healthy scratches. - Britain Covey was the Eagles’ punt returner after being temporarily elevated from the practice squad. - Noah Togiai had a role as TE3 after being temporarily elevated from the practice squad. Considering they can only bump him up twice more this season, they’ll likely look to add him to the roster at some point in the near future. - Playing the second most snaps of any pass catcher, Dallas Goedert saw four targets and caught three of them for 60 yards. - Kenneth Gainwell saw the second most playing time at RB. Gardner-Johnson deserves some credit for being able to play the entire game despite 1) only recently joining the team and 2) moving from nickel cornerback to safety. - It felt like Davis was underutilized. - Josh Sweat led all defensive linemen in playing time. While he won’t be a volume player, Pascal will have the ability to make an impact in some key spots such as third down and the red zone. Despite only playing 30% of the snaps, Gainwell saw as many targets (4) as Smith and Goedert. and 59.1% of the Eagles’ non-Jalen Hurts runs.

“We’re gonna get a lead and you’re gonna play with a lead the rest of the way.’ And that’s precisely what happened. We’ve got to clean up a lot of things on defense, as far as the run game and some of the things like that, but we’ll get those things corrected. Eagles Rookie Report Card: Frustration with Jonathan Gannon (Bleeding Green Nation)

Weekly check in on members of Philadelphia's 2022 NFL Draft class.

Nakobe Dean did not see the field very much on defense and that feels like a mistake. While there is a possibility that the Eagles are concerned about conditioning for the rookie, what is more likely is the second year defensive coordinator has no idea what to do with his new batch of talent on defense. The Lions’ offensive line is one of the better units in the league and Dan Campbell was content to run the ball at will.

WR Brown 'always open' in sensational debut for Eagles (The Washington Post)

Brown had a Philadelphia Eagles debut to remember, and certainly one for the record book, in a 38-35 win over the Detroit Lions on Sunday. Brown had a career- ...

Kirk Cousins had 333 yards passing in the win. He had 50 yards rushing in the first quarter, the highest total by a Philadelphia quarterback since Michael Vick ran for 2 more yards in the opening quarter of a 2013 game against the New York Giants. Miles Sanders averaged 7.3 yards per carry and scored a rushing TD for the first time since 2020. The Vikings won the most recent matchup in 2019. Brown hauled in a 54-yard pass from Hurts in the second quarter. The already much-maligned Eagles defensive coordinator faced the critics again after a rough effort against the Lions. But the Eagles ran for a whopping 216 yards and rushed for four touchdowns. The Eagles’ lone sack came on a fumbled snap and the defensive line failed to put much pressure on Jared Geoff. “He saw the field perfectly, he really did,” Sirianni said. Brown and Jalen Hurts already had a close friendship off the field. Heck, the offense in general. Perhaps not as well known as he should have been playing for the Titans, Brown can rise into superstardom in Philadelphia.
