4:39 — On a third-and-8 from the Houston 38-yard line, Mills overthrows Collins. 10:02 — On a second-and-6 from the Houston 29-yard line, Mills gets sacked and fumbles. 10:47 — The Colts get a delay of game as they don’t have enough players on the line of scrimmage for a field goal try. 3:16 — On a third-and-2 from Houston’s 20, the Texans bring in QB Jeff Driskel to run the wildcat. Austin product dropped Ryan for a 7-yard loss on second-and-6 from the Houston 30-yard line. 0:48 — The Colts commit a false start that backs them up third-and-18 at the Texans’ 37-yard line. After the penalty, Blankenship hits a 27-yard field goal. On a third-and-5 from the Houston 30-yard line, Mills rolls out and finds WR Chris Conley all alone with the line to gain right in front of him. Because it was fourth-and-4, the 5-yard penalty resulted in a first down. LB Kamu Grugier-Hill made Ryan pay for it with a lick at the line to gain. Houston hasn’t been able to thwart the Colts’ drive to this point. However, the series history shows that the Texans are 2-0 against Indianapolis on Opening Day.

Insider: 10 thoughts on the Colts' season-opening tie with the Texans (The Indianapolis Star)

It all amounted to an overtime finish, where Kwity Paye and the defense finally showed up, but the receivers and Rodrigo Blankenship couldn't get the job done.

- The lack of a pass rush for most of the game was the most shocking part of this game to me. The offensive line has never been the strength of the Texans, and getting to Davis Mills was supposed to be the way to turn this game around, and it just didn't happen. It's fair to chalk some of that up to the first game with a new team, but the Colts really needed a sharper performance given the plays their defense refused to make. The unit did get stronger as the game went on and got into a nice groove once the defense allowed them back on the field to assert their will downhill. This is still one of the positions where a starter isn't absolutely certain, and the Colts can't mess around with it, especially with a 37-year-old quarterback. Pryor got the start but didn't overly impress, and then Raimann was in for a few snaps, and then Pryor came back in. The plays within the flow were oddly the ones where Ryan was far more pedestrian, like the interception to Jerry Hughes on a screen pass and a couple other near picks in the middle of the field, which are supposed to be his bread and butter. They got Taylor the ball on a pitch where Pryor couldn't make a quick enough decision on which player to block and Taylor ran into him. Taylor was bottled up early but still found a way to break 140 yards against the Texans for a third straight game, finishing with 156 and a touchdown on 26 carries. They needed the Texans to let them back into the game, and they did. The issue is it didn't gash the Texans the way they wanted, and the passing situations Matt Ryan and the receivers found themselves in were not what they wanted. was all they had through the air outside of some passes to Nyheim Hines, and he finished with eight catches and 109 yards and a game-tying touchdown.

It will get better, but it was a rough debut for the rookie. It’s going to take time for the rookie to get settled into the NFL. He finished with a quarterback hit and two tackles for loss on the day, and he helped hold the Texans backfield to 25 carries for 63 yards (2.5 yards per carry). While the defensive line for the Colts was bullied for the majority of the game when it came to rushing the passer, Stewart was a menace in the middle of the front when it came time to stop the run. If the Colts want their offense to run with any sort of consistency, they have to get better production from one of the highest-paid tackles in the NFL. Even though he was bailed out, he had a chance to win the game in overtime with a 42-yard attempt.

His first sack of the drive came on first down, as Paye simply bull-rushed his way through a tight end to get to Mills and bring him down. Four plays later, Taylor was in the end zone with a two-yard run, and all of a sudden the Colts were within seven, 20-13, with 7:46 left in the fourth quarter. We spoke about swimming in deep water — first quarter, second quarter, third quarter — and the fourth (quarter), that's when we really went to go hunt as D-linemen, and had a, 'Just go get it,' mentality," Paye said. But that's when the Colts as a team started to get hungry — and especially on defense. The offense shocked the Houston defense with a run-heavy approach with All-Pro running back Jonathan Taylor and kept scoring points on its end. But the unit wasn't doing much to make Texans quarterback Davis Mills uncomfortable, either, as the Colts had just one quarterback hit and zero sacks heading into halftime.

“Mentally, I try to treat every kick the exact same way, whether it’s the first points of the game, first points of the season, or whether it’s kicking, trying to win the game in overtime,” Blankenship said. I guess that’s a silver lining that I’ll take moving into the next week.” The Colts should have found a kicker, and it’s unclear at this point if a search will start for another leg this week. What is puzzling is that the Colts didn’t bring in more competition for Blankenship this offseason. But the reality is that some kicks carry more weight. 1 thing the team wanted to find was consistency. Because Blankenship hasn’t given the Colts much reason to trust him. On two of his 50-yard attempts, Blankenship came up short, missing because his foot hit the ground before the ball. “We obviously had a lot of confidence,” Reich said after the game. Wins in the NFL mean too much. NFL kickers have made 82.8% of their 42-yard field goals over the last 10 years. Not with the game on his foot.

That was a potential touchdown catch that could’ve put all of the pressure on Houston early, as the Colts could’ve been up 10-0, and could’ve kept the throttle on—cruising to victory. It’s a catch that Dulin simply has to make (by being stronger with the football)—and the Colts were held to a field goal. It’s also fair to contemplate whether the Colts should still at least try. and Hines needed to step up in the passing game, and no one ever did consistently. Hilton is the sure answer many seem to think at this late stage of his playing career (and having battled through some injuries in recent seasons). The Colts haven’t had a consistently strong #2 wide receiver since veteran Reggie Wayne retired following the 2014 season. The same issues of a lack of leg strength and clutchness haven’t gone away since his rookie season in 2020. Yes, the Colts, out of loyalty to a kicker who was a team captain, future Hall of Famer, and instrumental in their franchise’s 2006 Super Bowl run, stuck with Vinatieri entirely too long during his extended (and eventual career-ending) slump. However, even prior to being placed on injured reserve in 2021, ‘Hot Rod’ didn’t necessarily inspire a ton of confidence among the Colts fanbase to be safely handed the job for this year. He handled the pressure well and was fearless in the pocket, but that needs cleaning up. Their current starter, Rodrigo ‘Hot Rod’ Blankenship, missed the majority of last season with a hip injury—but was brought back as the heavy favorite for 2022. There were some bright spots, namely Jonathan Taylor rushing for 161 rushing yards and a rushing touchdown, and Michael Pittman Jr.

It wasn’t just him, and it wasn’t just the kicker. Afterward, Reich grabbed one of the Colts’ slogans – not the one about getting 1% better, But Speed also ran into the Houston punter in the end zone, giving the Texans a first down. Hell, half the time he didn’t even get to the rim. That was the biggest play in the Colts’ rally from 20-3 deficit to force overtime. Yeah, Kwity Paye had himself a nice game, and like Taylor and Pittman, he was drafted by GM Chris Ballard and coached by Frank Reich and supported by the rest of this coaching staff. With Matt Ryan, who was brought here to make the layups, as Ballard had said after last season, when he laid out one of his biggest issues with Carson Wentz, and by extension one of his basic expectations of Wentz’s replacement: Taylor, the reigning NFL rushing champion, began defense of that title with 161 yards and a touchdown on 31 carries. Like, whose idea was it to start the season with that corps of receivers? This game, this godforsaken 20-20 tie, was two bad teams racing to the bottom and getting there at the same time. The Texans could do nothing with it, because it’s like I said: The Texans were bad, and the Texans were stupid. The Indianapolis Colts scored 20 points and the Houston Texans scored 20 points, which means nobody won.

I’ll have to watch the video a little bit, but when a guy comes clean like that on the backside, you kind of figure out maybe who the culprit was, but I didn’t see it. “It’s a long season ahead of us,” Mills said. They don’t want to lose coming out of the half down 20-3, so we’ve got to understand that when you’ve got someone on the run, we’ve got to finish them off, and we didn’t do that this evening.” We’ve got to just stay with it, and in the second half do a better job. There were plenty of mistakes throughout that game where we could've sealed it and we didn't." Earlier in the second quarter, the Colts drove to the Texans' two-yard line to set up a fourth and goal. But the Colts didn't view Blankenship's miss as some siloed-off event that solely determined the outcome of the game. "It's a great feeling to know how we could storm back with 10 or 11 minutes left," Hines said. Texans and Colts wrap up OT in 20-20 tie | Rapid Reactions (HoustonTexans.com)

In their 2022 regular season opener, the Texans and Colts headed into overtime tied 20-20 but neither team was able to secure the win.

A strip-sack on Mills resulted in the first turnover of the game for Houston. However, an incomplete pass and a tackle for loss on third-and-1 would force the Texans to decide between a punt or going for it on fourth-and-3 from the Colts 49-yard line. Four plays later, Taylor rushed for a two-yard touchdown and the Colts trailed by just one score, down 20-13. Houston extended its lead in the third quarter by a score of 13-3 with a 43-yard field goal to cap off the drive. Houston took a 20-3 lead in the third quarter. "Once we get in that rhythm of running the ball, it seems like JT only gets better as defenses get more tired. Only Minnesota's Dalvin Cook (seven carries, 46 yards) and Tennessee's Derrick Henry (five carries, 17 yards) carried the ball more in that specific situation than Taylor did _in one game. Taylor gained 49 yards on those four runs; no running back in the entire 2021 season gained more rushing yards while down by seven with under four minutes remaining. It conserves clock and gives them the best opportunity to pick up the kind of explosive gains that could get them back into the game.

Colts Frank Reich Says Mistakes vs. Texans 'A Reflection on Me' (Sports Illustrated)

While the Colts left Houston with a tie and a share of the lead in the AFC South, their sloppy performance is a concern moving forward.

But for Reich and this team, the mistakes and errors need to be cleaned up and fixed by next Sunday. When putting this into perspective, the performance by the Colts is just one game in a very long and grueling 18-week journey. Ryan bounced back to finish the day 32-of-50 for 352 yards with a touchdown and an interception, staying cool and leading the Colts’ offense on their comeback. The Texans were not fooled, and Hines was stuffed for a loss, completely flipping the momentum of the game. Ryan’s inability to protect the ball cost the Colts in this one. The Colts’ poor performance is a reflection on him, and that is a really bad thing. For a team with deep playoff aspirations, to start the season looking like this is alarming. Instead, the Colts run a wildcat play with running back Nyheim Hines taking the snap, and Ryan split out wide. While it does not count as a loss, the Colts did not come away with a victory in Week 1 for the ninth consecutive season. Yet head coach Frank Reich was left to answer questions after the game about all the mistakes and missed opportunities his team squandered yet again. Other words that could be used to describe the game include bizarre, sloppy, or a roller coaster. And weird is only one way to describe the contest that ended in a 20-20 score in a half-empty NRG Stadium.

What Frank Reich, Matt Ryan said following 20-20 tie with Texans (Colts Wire)

Though technically not a loss, the feeling around the game is similar. The Colts entered the matchup as heavy favorites and trailed for the majority of the ...

We’ve got to be sharp from the start.” But I am proud of how the defense stepped up there at the end and got the stop at least when we needed it to at least walk away with a tie.” It needs to be right from the start. We’ll take a look at it tomorrow, figure out what we need to do better, but we’ve got to find a way. We’ve got to take a look at the tape tomorrow and check, but like everywhere else in the game, it comes down to the little things, those details. But there was a lot of good, but we’ve got to finish drives. There has to be a sense of urgency to get that done. They’ve got incredibly strong beliefs in themselves and the guys around them, and that’s huge for us as a team. We’ve got to be able to finish drives. We got ourselves back in it, gave ourselves a chance at the end, and we didn’t convert. There was obviously a lot of plays in the game, so we’re not pointing to the missed field goal in overtime. The Colts entered the matchup as heavy favorites and trailed for the majority of the contest.

Colts Stat of the Game: Week 1 @Houston (Stampede Blue)

Hello everyone! First of all, I just wanted to say how great it is to be covering the Colts once again, and how happy I am to be back with you, ...

Before you start saying “Well if Pierce makes the catch then this whole narrative is different” I want to say that the Colts had 3 other plays in that sequence, and that once again as last season, Reich got too cute on 4th down near the goal line, and the Colts once again left with their hands empty. The muffed punt by Nyheim Hines near the end of the fourth quarter could have easily costed the Colts the game had it not been for a game-saving play by Isiah Rodgers (Honestly Hines should at least get Rodgers a cool watch for that save). First of all, I just wanted to say how great it is to be covering the Colts once again, and how happy I am to be back with you, as writing for this page is among the most enjoyable things I do, and reading your comments and interacting with you makes it even greater.

Colts vs. Texans Snap Counts | Week 1 (Sports Illustrated)

What stood out about players' playing time in the Indianapolis Colts' 20-20 tie with the Houston Texans?

Starters Yannick Ngakoue, Kwity Paye, DeForest Buckner, and Grover Stewart played an average of 53 snaps (76%) while Tyquan Lewis was the only rotational player to see much work. - 24 (75%) — E.J. Nyheim Hines was also effective as a pass-catcher in the work that he saw. The line is a unit heavily reliant on chemistry and cohesion, so although they'd like to get Raimann some live work, taking out one of your new starters in a group dependent on everyone being present may not always go smoothly. Today, we take a look at how many snaps players got on offense, defense, and special teams. It should be noted that the contest went to overtime, which inflated everyone's playing time a bit.
