The problem is, we saw what happens when there’s one or two bad plays or blown coverages on defense. This historic win, 26-24 on the road over Carolina, with all it’s drama, didn’t put to rest fears about the long-term outlook for this team as they await the return of Deshaun Watson in Week 13. He hesitated to unleash deep passes and was mostly inaccurate on many of his other throws. Let’s start with the good news. The reason the Browns can get out to such a good start is because they have a player like Myles Garrett, who had back-to-back sacks on Baker Mayfield in the third quarter, and a young secondary hungry to make plays on the ball. All of this is absolutely good enough to get the Browns to, at worst, 3-1, as they face the Jets in Week 2 and the Falcons in Week 4 with the toughest of their next three games a Thursday home battle with the Steelers in Week 3.

Mayfield had little to do with the Browns trading him or the hype around Sunday's game. Maybe it's time we all move on.

But he is an interesting test case, in a sports sense, on how quickly we can tribalize once a person changes jersey colors (and remember, Mayfield didn’t even ask for the change!) It just shows how far into a parallel universe the Browns and their fan base have traveled, codified in their ability to justify the signing of Watson and label Mayfield as some kind of enemy. (Watson looked pretty bad in his preseason debut despite having much longer to prepare.) It takes time to get used to wide receivers and the nuances of an offense, and yet he still had the Panthers with a lead at the end of the game. He was essentially fired by his employer who found a more suitable replacement and, after they did so, he went dark on social media for weeks until he could find a new roster. It wasn’t his call to sit on a field goal during Carolina’s final drive instead of trying for a touchdown. Are we to believe that he didn’t live up to their standard on how a franchise player should act, but

Hunt was the perfect complement to Chubb, who ran it 12 times in the first half for 79 yards. The Panthers turned that into a 24-23 lead on Pineiro's kick. He isn’t a great first run-blocker and doesn’t get all that low, but what he does do well is let guys take themselves out of the play. While he didn’t have the stats you’d think he would against this Carolina Panthers team, he was a key reason why the team had the dominating showing it did in the first half. The game was ugly and there is a lot this team needs to improve upon as the season continues but a win is a win.

Everyone knows that RB Nick Chubb is great but it is important to point out all the different ways he is great. The Browns dominated with 355 net yards and 38:26 time of possession compared to the Panthers at 261 yards and 21:34. The one to Peoples-Jones should have kept the drive going. On the next play, Cleveland opted to go for it on fourth down. The one to Cooper would have been a big gain or touchdown.
