Bryan Cook will be on the field in the team’s dime looks and buffalo nickel packages. Go play and don’t let yourself get in the way of you playing good. With a well-executed gameplan, the Chiefs should be able to steal a win on the road to start the season. It looks like a weakness that could be exploited, especially if Murphy isn’t on the field. It’s not just getting him down but making sure (we are) getting him down in a way that’s legal to the game so that way they just don’t get an automatic first down.” Despite the changes in Kansas City this offseason, he still expects the offense to keep rolling. Reid said he did a good job, but we’ll see just how prepared the group is for his dual-threat capabilities on Sunday. “By that I mean him extending plays, extending drives by just scrambling around and not only the difficulty of just tackling him but also some of the problems we ran into that game was since he is a little bit shorter. Containing or “corralling” Kyler Murray has been a big topic of discussion amongst the Chiefs’ players and coaching staff this week. It’s been a recipe for success at the season’s onset, but Arizona remains an underdog in the matchup. Kansas City has been one of the league’s most successful teams over the past four seasons, but they boast a remade defensive secondary and offensive receiving corps for 2022. They’ve one of the NFL’s most dangerous dual-threat quarterbacks, a young offensive-minded head coach and a veteran defensive coordinator.

'Madden' simulation: Chiefs beat Cardinals in mistake-filled game (Cards Wire)

In a simulation of the Cardinals' Week 1 game against the Chiefs, Patrick Mahomes throws four interceptions but the Cardinals miss 3 FGs.

James Conner has 44 yards and a touchdown on 14 carries. But the Cardinals defense makes a play. Clyde Edwards-Helaire rushed 19 times for 54 yards and has six catches for 68 yards and a score. Mecole Hardman catches seven passes for 75 yards and two touchdowns. In the Chiefs’ first drive, he has a pick-six, returning an interception 47 yards for a touchdown. Kyler Murray is 21-for-43 passes for 222 yards, a touchdown and a pick. In fact, the simulation predicted a very sloppy game. The Cardinals force the Chiefs to punt but the Cardinals send out Prater for a 63-yard kick that he misses. The Cardinals answer with a nine-yard touchdown pass to Hollywood Brown to tie the game. Mahomes is picked off by Budda Baker and the Cardinals tie the game with a one-yard rushing touchdown by James Conner. The Chiefs answer with a 20-yard touchdown pass from Mahomes to running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire and then go ahead 14-10 on a two-yard touchdown pass to Mecole Hardman after the Cardinals punt away. He picks off Mahomes on the very next drive and the Cardinals settle on a 44-yard field goal to take a 10-0 lead.

On the other side of the ball, the Chiefs also have question marks after retooling this offseason but also have the organizational pedigree that should propel them to a win. The Cardinals' injury woes have hit important players on their roster, and the Reid-Mahomes duo is going to feast as a result. Arizona is too banged up to be able to keep pace completely, and that will be reflected in an eight-point Chiefs win. Even with the uncertainty about so many fresh and new faces, this game is heading towards a double-digit win for the Chiefs. Chiefs Cardinals final score: 44-21 statement win in Arizona (Arrowhead Pride)

In Week 1, the Kansas City Chiefs made an absolute statement in their 44-21 blowout win over the Arizona Cardinals. Despite losing to the Chiefs in an AFC ...

The Chiefs' offense may not be as explosive without Hill — but in its first look, it would be hard to describe it as less efficient. As a team, the Chiefs recorded seven passes defensed. Rookie defensive end George Karlaftis earned one of those quarterback hits and batted down a pass at the line. Reid hit an extra point — and on kickoffs, was exploding through the ball for touchbacks. But you can't pick who you play — and against an injured team, the Chiefs both dominated and exploited its opponent. In all, Mahomes connected with 10 different receivers — and even the running game looked good. As the Chiefs began the post-Tyreek Hill era, quarterback Patrick Mahomes sliced and diced the Cardinals' secondary to the tune of 30 of 39 for 360 yards and 5 touchdowns. Even running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire looked the part, completing a 74-scrimmage yard game and notching two receiving touchdowns. Kelce served the quarterback reliably on Sunday, finishing with eight catches for 121 yards and a touchdown. “I think there’s going to be like a different player every single game that has the big game. But the team messaging throughout the offseason was that though Hill was a generational player, the Chiefs would be just fine, adding four new receivers as they retained Mecole Hardman. It’s not going to be just necessarily Tyreek and Travis every single week, where it’s like one of the other is having a big game — or both.

He was observed riding in the passenger side of a cart to the locker room. He didn’t not return to the game and his immediate status was unknown. “We always believed we were going to go out there and put on a show and I thought the guys did that,” Mahomes said. Fortson’s lone catch against the Cardinals helped put points on the board. Murray faced consistent pressure throughout and found no semblance of rhythm once the Chiefs jumped out to a big lead. “We just appreciate him being able to do that,” the Chiefs coach said. That’s a luxury a lot of teams around the league don’t have, unless they’re carrying two kickers on an active roster. The Mizzou product is at it again, if Sunday’s game is any indication. The player-Reid made it, and then handled the ensuing kickoff. Smith-Schuster was second on the team with six catches for 79 yards, though he did lose a fumble. But that shouldn’t take away from what the Chiefs’ defense accomplished against a dual threat like Murray. Sunday’s matchup produced about as complete of a game as one could see from Mahomes.

Quarterback Patrick Mahomes, Kansas City Chiefs 'put on show' in ... (ESPN)

Kansas City quarterback Patrick Mahomes threw for 360 yards and five touchdowns as the Chiefs raced to a convincing 44-15 victory over the Arizona Cardinals ...

It's going to be the deep passes. Coach has a great game plan in, you have guys flying around that are ready to go, ready to play a game and not be at practice against each other. It's going to be running the football, it's going to be throwing the football. "We went and looked at it and got all the X-rays and stuff like that. It's going to be the short game. We've always believed that we were going to go out there and put on a show and I thought guys did that.

Rapid reactions: Cardinals dominated by Chiefs in season opener (Arizona Sports)

Arizona Sports' hosts, reporters and editors share their thoughts on the Arizona Cardinals' Week 1 loss to the Chiefs.

I knew Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs would take advantage of a weak Cardinals defense, but I figured the offense would at least make it interesting. But to hinge their entire defensive identity on his expanded role and then expect Simmons and the other youngsters to be the reason this team improves on the ugly ending to 2021 is on the Steve Keim-led staff. It’s true many of those starting veterans were not available in Week 1, but consider this: The best players on the field outside of a too-often scrambling Kyler Murray (he was just fine) were undrafted players Dennis Gardeck and Greg Dortch. Logic suggests the young guys on defense should improve as they get more reps, and the team as a whole should get healthier. They have to get better in a hurry otherwise this season is going to slide out of view with the same speed. Kyler Murray did not hold up his side of the shootout bargain, the running game couldn’t get established outside of a James Conner TD and Zach Ertz was nowhere to be found until the fourth quarter. And for what it’s worth, the Rams and 49ers both lost this week too, so it’s not like the season is ruined. The lack of attention paid to that side of the football threatens to derail the whole operation. Again, got the ball back and went 11 plays for 75 yards and a touchdown. They got the ball back and went seven plays for 88 yards and a touchdown. The Chiefs took the opening kickoff and went 11 plays and 75 yards for a touchdown. I mean the Chiefs were healthy, the Cardinals were not.

Kansas City Chiefs 'all smiles' after dominating win against Arizona ... (USA TODAY)

“I always have the mindset of going out there and proving that we are the Kansas City Chiefs,” Mahomes said. “It’s gonna be running the football, throwing the football, it’s gonna be short game and deep passes. “We always believed we were going to go out there and put on a show.” It wasn't all offense either from the Chiefs. But that joy was almost exclusive to the visiting team. The three led a balanced offensive attack through the Chiefs' 39 passing and 27 rushing attempts.

7 winners and 3 losers from the Chiefs' win against the Cardinals (Arrowhead Pride)

Let's count up those who did well — and those who did not — during Kansas City's win in Arizona.

With the But with only three catches on six targets, Hardman definitely left some plays on the field — including at least one that would have been a touchdown if he had finished the play. But the game plan against Arizona quarterback Kyler Murray likely called for Karlaftis and fellow defensive end Frank Clark to hang back and contain Murray, preventing him from escaping the pocket. With a couple of spectacular pass breakups on long downfield passes, it appears his range and ball skills are as strong as his confidence. Harrison Butker: With a hat tip to Justin Reid — who filled in for a few kicks — Butker put in an impressive, gritty performance on Sunday. He certainly looks like he’ll be a part of the offense this season. On Sunday, Kelce looked like he could play another 10 years, scoring the season’s first touchdown and ending the game with 121 yards on eight catches. Nick Bolton: The second-year linebacker picked up right where he left off in 2021 with another 10-tackle performance. But if the game had been closer in the second half, you’d have to think that he might have gotten more work later. Isaiah Pacheco: The back that did own the second half was the highly-touted seventh-round rookie. This was a very good start for his season, which featured some fairly explosive plays that included an 18-yard run and a 25-yard catch. The new-look offense (and the young defense) both asserted themselves over an overmatched, shorthanded opponent.

Chiefs HC Andy Reid provides injury updates after win over Cardinals (Chiefs Wire)

The postgame injury list for the Kansas City Chiefs was long, but Andy Reid seemed optimistic, even on a short week.

But as the season goes on, you’re going to have those bruises and you’re going to have to play through it.” As Reid mentioned, Mahomes played the entire game after injuring his wrist in the first quarter. “Pat (Mahomes) landed on his wrist, we’re doing a little work on that coming up here,” Reid said. “But I just got it looked at, and everything looked good. (Trent) McDuffie strained his hamstring, we’ll see how he does. Three players seem to be in wait-and-see situations with their injuries, but Reid expressed optimism about two players who were able to return and finish the game.

Arizona Cardinals' lack of urgency glaring in lopsided loss to Chiefs (Arizona Sports)

The Arizona Cardinals were the lesser team by a mile on Sunday. There's no way around that. Now, it's back to the drawing board once more.

“We got a long road ahead of us and I think it’s a wake-up call for everybody.” The energy was higher and they didn’t shoot themselves in the foot. We came out and played at a high level and I didn’t sense a sense of urgency. As far as us, you look in the mirror, attention to detail, the little things, the little things, the little things. “If you don’t show up and be dialed in and take advantage of any opportunities you have, this is what’s going to happen. I know we hurt ourselves, shot ourselves in the foot in a lot of those moments. “Have a sense of urgency in everything you do,” Kingsbury added when asked about his message to the team. “We got to practice better, there’s no doubt,” Kingsbury said. … Impressive win by them and we got to get a lot better in a hurry.” Offensively, the Cardinals lacked consistent rhythm and were stymied for a large part of the game. Instead, the Cardinals came away with zero points and just eight yards gained to show for it. We didn’t execute in any phase and they played at a high level.

On the Chiefs’ first drive of that quarter, he responded with 40 total yards and a three-yard touchdown and ended up with a game-high 62 rushing yards. “We’re the Kansas City Chiefs,” Mahomes said. He received the pass attempt or carry on three of the first four plays of that drive. “We used all of them,” Reid said. “I wouldn’t say we were trying to do one thing,” he said. Edwards-Helaire was the focal point from the get-go, receiving the carry on three of the first four plays of the 44-21 victory and producing 34 yards.

Chiefs vs Cardinals, Week 1: By the numbers (Arrowhead Addict)

The Kansas City Chiefs dominated the Arizona Cardinals in week 1 there were plenty of notes to be made, but these numbers in particular tell the story.

It was an honest stance to take with so much turnover in the offense, but as far as success in the NFL goes, continuity is king, and the Patrick Mahomes/Travis Kelce connection is still the backbone of the team. Following a year where the defense was ranked among the bottom of the league in most categories, there were a lot of questions about just how much improvement could come in a single offseason. The Arizona Cardinals averaged over 26 points per game in 2021 and were a legitimate top-10 offense in terms of efficiency. A lot of them were, and in ways that created hope for the potential of this team and its revamped personnel. Among all of the uncertainties surrounding the Chiefs’ 2022 campaign, the ceiling for the young and rebuilt defense was the most pressing. The final score of 44-21 speaks for itself, but in between high speed and flashy offensive displays were plenty of minor details that not only led to the win, but offered a great deal of reassurance for fans.

4 takeaways from Chiefs' Week 1 win over Cardinals (Chiefs Wire)

Here are a few of the things we're taking away from the Kansas City Chiefs' Week 1 win over the Arizona Cardinals.

There is no doubt that there is room for improvement there, but the defense also came through in a big way when needed on Sunday. Pressure from Chris Jones on third down forced the second punt. The Chiefs scored a whopping six touchdowns in their Week 1 game against the Cardinals. The Chiefs’ defense came up big in key moments throughout the game, but specifically on third down. Every phase of the game stood out in the 44-21 win, with key contributions to the winning effort. An offseason’s worth of questions about last season’s AFC title game and the decision to trade Tyreek Hill during the offseason culminated in flat-out domination of the Arizona Cardinals in the season opener.

There were some big expectations for the rookie corner out of Washington and he met those expectations and then some in Week 1 of the 2022 NFL season. In his final season with the huskies, McDuffie allowed just 16 catches on 36 targets for 111 yards, no touchdowns and five pass breakups per PFF. The Chiefs traded up in the first round of the 2022 NFL draft to select McDuffie at pick No.

Reid also added that Mahomes injured his left wrist early in the game, but was able to continue. "Whether it was my first day on the job or a day like today, I feel like I always have something to prove," Kelce said. The game was far from over at that point though, and a critical juncture soon took place just prior to halftime following a Chiefs' fumble in their own territory. It was a chance that Mahomes didn't waste, as he marched the Chiefs into position for a 54-yard field goal by kicker Harrison Butker with only seconds remaining. The latter score, which took place on fourth down, put Kansas City ahead by a score of 20-7. It was the beginning of what turned out to be a big day for Kelce, who finished the contest with a team-most eight receptions for 121 yards.

The one tackle and two passes defended on the stat sheet didn’t do his performance justice because of those intangible elements. The rookie from Rutgers took advantage of his opportunities late in the game, finishing with 62 yards on 12 rushes and his first career touchdown. Thornhill showed his ability on the field throughout the game, seemingly stepping in vocally as Tyrann Mathieu had done in past years. He recorded one tackle, but his performance wasn’t about the box score. He finished the game 30-of-39 for 360 yards and five touchdown passes. Patrick Mahomes appeared very happy with his new crop of receivers, posting a dominant performance offensively for the Chiefs.

The little things, the little things, the little things, we did not execute in the moments where we needed to. I think it was good for this to happen to us," Murray said. "I know we hurt ourselves, shot ourselves in the foot in a lot of those moments. There was no rhythm to the offense, the ground game was nonexistent, and Murray was under heat -- pressured on 27.8 percent of his dropbacks, per Next Gen Stats. "I think key moments of that game we hurt ourselves," Murray said. The offense couldn't keep pace, looking lost for long stretches as Murray put up just 193 yards and two garbage-time TDs.

He just went for a casual stroll—and paid the price. Following the interview with Michaels, Sal Licata from WFAN radio and SNY TV in New York joins Jimmy for the weekly “Traina Thoughts” segment. And after he was presented with a game ball, McDaniel told his team, “I didn’t do s---.” Whether Texas A&M lost to Appalachian State on Saturday—and it did—it’s just amazing how painful this is to watch. The single funniest thing I saw all weekend was this LSU fan who didn’t run on the field or streak. If you saw any of the Niners-Bears game Sunday, you know rain was a major issue. And then there was this Niners fan. He comes back from the locker room, thinks he’s probably done and Daniel LaRusso is gonna fight. And he comes through.” Personally, the only problem I have with Romo is I think it stinks he stopped predicting plays.
