From Greenfield High School in Wisconsin, 2024 prospect Tanner Phelps will make the quick trip over to Madison on Saturday. The fact that Wisconsin has him on campus is a good sign in terms of his interest level, but his recruitment still has a ways to go. From Findlay High School (Ohio), his older brother is an Ohio State commit, and Ryan already boasts offers from some of the best schools in the country despite only being a sophomore in high school. He possesses good size for the position and it is good to see the Badgers get him on campus early. He has been hot on the recruiting trail, recently adding offers from Iowa State, Minnesota, and Penn State. After hosting three 2023 signal-callers a week ago, Lacrue is the latest offer-quality quarterback to visit Madison in the 2023 class. Still looking to find their quarterback in the 2023 class, the Wisconsin Badgers will also bring in Colorado quarterback Cole Lacrue. He was at Ohio State last weekend and is teammates with offered running back target Corey Smith who visited UW last Saturday. Arguably the most important visitor of the season so far is 2024 quarterback Mabrey Mettauer. Illinois wide receiver Aric Johnson will be visiting Madison this Saturday as well. With Wisconsin recently offering 2024 forward Jackson McAndrew last weekend and with Bubu Benjamin still scheduled to visit next weekend, it will be interesting to see which prospect jumps on the scholarship chance first. All three of Wisconsin's 2024 commits will be on campus this weekend.
The Wisconsin football team continues its nonconference schedule Saturday with a game against Washington State at Camp Randall Stadium.
He threw a strike to Keontez Lewis for 40 yards to the Washington State 5 on third and 10. That allowed the pursuit to catch up and bring down Bell. Mertz hit Cundiff for 24 yards to the 12 but Cundiff fumbled after being hit from behind and the Cougars recovered at their 12 with 5:14 left. UW overcame holding calls against right tackle Logan Brown and center Joe Tippman to drive to the Washington State 31 but the drive stalled at the 25 and Vito Calvaruso, who missed from 51 yards in the first half, missed from 43 yards on the first play of the fourth quarter. Six plays later, Ward hit Watson in the flat and the former UW tailback spun away from Latu at the 30 and had clear sailing into the end zone to help the Cougars take a 17-14 lead with 5:12 left in the quarter. A first-down incompletion and delay-of-game penalty left UW facing second and 10 but Mertz gave UW the lead with a 10-yard pass to Cundiff with 20 seconds left in the half. UW went three and out, but the Cougars got the ball back at their 27 after a 53-yard punt by Vujnovich and a terrific tackle by Latu, which resulted in a return of minus-2 yards. Cornerback Cedrick Dort then broke up a short pass on third down and the Cougars lined up to punt with 1:06 left and UW with one timeout left. UW got the ball back at its 38 back after Washington State went three and out but a personal foul on left tackle Jack Nelson (hands to the face) eventually left the offense in a first-and-25 hole. After a 9-yard gain on first down, Ward was sacked for a 6-yard loss to the 7 by safety Kamo’i Latu to set up third and 7 with 1:09 left. Mertz capped the drive with a gorgeous pass to Cundiff for a 17-yard score with 6:05 left in the half. Watson scored on a 2-yard run in the second quarter to give the Cougars a 7-0 lead and gained 11 yards on a second and 6 late in the game to pick up a crucial first down that helped the Cougars run out the final 5 minutes 14 seconds.

Washington State QB Wisconsin put a hurting on Illinois State at home to the tune of 38 to nothing. The Wisconsin Badgers have the luxury of staying home another week and will welcome the Washington State Cougars at 3:30 p.m. The matchup was all but wrapped up at the end of the third, by which point Wisconsin had established a 31 to nothing advantage. Allen put himself on the highlight reel with a 96-yard TD scramble in the second quarter. The Badgers got themselves on the board against the Illinois State Redbirds last week, but Illinois State never followed suit.

The Wisconsin Badgers fall to 1-1 on the season after a three-point loss to Washington State in Week 2.
Washington State did a great job of bottling up the Wisconsin run game. But a few plays later, Mertz hit Clay Cundiff for a first down gain, but he fumbled the ball back to Washington State. After the punt, Wisconsin had a chance to get off the field with Jay Shaw coming up with an interception off Cam Ward, but he fumbled the return, giving Washington State another first down. Guerendo had a 10-yard reception and back-to-back five yard runs to move the ball down to the nine-yard line for Wisconsin. The Badgers defense would hold Washington State out of the end zone though, and force a short field goal by Dean Janikowski. Renard Bell would take the second-half kickoff back 73 yards for Washington State to set up a scoring opportunity for the Cougars. Andy Vujnovich would boom a 53-yard punt to push Washington State back, but the Cougars quickly got back in business. Washington State would proceed to go three-and-out on the next drive, but a punt return error by Wisconsin would pin the Badgers back at their own 10-yard line. However, penalties and some timely tackles for loss by the Washington State defense would halt the Wisconsin drive and force the Badgers to attempt a 51-yard field goal that missed wide-right. The gamble to go for it on fourth down would not work in Wisconsin's favor, as Washington State would answer quickly with a four play drive that amassed 53 yards in just over a minute of game time. Mertz found wide receiver Keontez Lewis for a big 40-yard gain, and then finished the drive with a 10-yard strike to tight end Clay Cundiff for a second touchdown on the day. After an early first down the Badgers would be forced to punt the ball away to Washington State.

The Badgers should be able to build a comfortable lead, but I wouldn't be surprised if the Cougars are able to get on the board by the end of the game.

It’s a place I love and I can’t wait to keep this thing going.” “I just think Cougs across the country are real proud of these guys,” Dickert said. Wisconsin’s ground-and-pound approach had the Cougs on their heels during a lengthy possession late in the third quarter, but the Badgers had to settle for a 43-yard field-goal attempt after three run stops near the line of scrimmage. I just feel like it was a stepping stone in my journey.” Ward took a hit on third-and-10 and threw an off-target pass into the hands of Badger cornerback Jay Shaw, but Cougar slotback Lincoln Victor sped across the field and blindsided Shaw, forcing a fumble that was recovered by WSU center Konner Gomness to give the Cougs a fresh set of downs. On his third series, Ward completed a 33-yard floater to tight end Billy Riviere, setting up a short TD scamper from Nakia Watson, a first-year WSU starter at tailback and a former backup running back for the Badgers in 2019 and 2020. Ward, a highly touted FCS transfer who was playing in his first game against a major opponent, passed 17 of 28 for 200 yards with one TD and two picks. Yet WSU’s defense limited big plays and the Cougs’ offense made just enough of them to clip the Badgers (1-1) on the scoreboard. Unfortunately, they were successful playing that game for a while, throwing the football.” “It was just about strain, start to finish.” “We played a gritty 60 minutes of football,” Dickert said. They used a resilient effort to stun the 19th-ranked Wisconsin Badgers, grinding out a 17-14 decision in front of 74,001 fans at Camp Randall Stadium.

Senior cornerback Jay Shaw picked off a pass from Ward after Ward was hit, but Shaw fumbled the ball on the return and it gave the Cougars a first-and-10 near midfield. UW has to generate more vertical push and give the backs some lanes to get a head of steam. Mertz converted a third-and-17 with a beautiful pass on a corner route by Lewis to the sideline in the third quarter. One of the advantages the Badgers expected to have Saturday was in the trenches, but the Cougars mostly bottled up UW’s rushing attack between the tackles. One of the aspects that held back the 2021 Badgers’ offense was the lack of a deep passing game. Mertz went 18 of 31 for 227 yards and two scores, plus the interception in the fourth quarter.
The Badgers had three turnovers and 11 penalties in a loss to Washington State. Here's what UW players had to say.
Columnist Jim Polzin doesn't hold back in grading the Wisconsin football's team performance in its loss to Washington State at Camp Randall Stadium.
He also put Calvaruso in a tough spot on that first field goal attempt because a 51-yarder was a stretch on a day when the wind wasn’t helping. His 51-yard attempt in the first half went wide right, and he skidded a 43-yard attempt in the second half. But the Badgers’ inability to finish drives was a killer.
