Penn State Football: key players vs the Ohio Bobcats (Victory Bell Rings)

We heard throughout fall camp that Kaytron Allen was turning heads, and now that he’s gotten his feet wet in D1 football, it’s time for him to show it. One would assume that Keyvone Lee, Nick Singleton, and Kaytron Allen would all get a near equal number of carries like they did in week one. For that to happen, though, these four players for Penn State Football are going to have to play some of their best ball.

Penn State vs. Ohio postgame updates: Lions roll, mission ... (York Daily Record/Sunday News)

Follow PSU reporter Frank Bodani for continual updates from the Nittany Lions' home-opener vs. Ohio in Beaver Stadium.

Attention will be on right tackle Caedan Wallace and his backup, Bryce Effner, to see if they can stabilize the team's biggest weakness last week. Lee will get the start but our breakthrough bet is Singleton, who nearly ripped off a long run on his first college carry. Still, there should be a handful of long runs from the rotation of Keyvone Lee, Nick Singleton and Kaytron All. Expect Singleton to break the team's 17-game streak without a 100-yard rusher. Remember, the rookie was so close to breaking his first collegiate carry for a length-of-the field touchdown last week at Purdue. The tailbacks showed flashes of success but could not break free. Ohio: He completed his first six passes, converted a fourth down, ripped off a long run and scored the go-ahead touchdown. Clifford was particularly effective early with his decision-making and accuracy − even throwing the ball away a couple of times when called for. His late first-quarter run started simply enough: Quickly but patiently picking his way along the right side of the line. The Lions needed to win big and improve upon doing so. Today, the even more highly-hyped Singleton needed only five carries to break the streak. But, overall, the Lions' depth and young talent puts them in good shape for the upcoming road trip to Auburn.

Five takeaways from Penn State's Week 2 victory over Ohio (Nittany Lions Wire)

Here are five takeaways from Penn State's blowout victory over Ohio. Feed Nick Sinlgeton. Sep 10, 2022; University Park, Pennsylvania, USA; ...

While there are still some areas of concern (see above with the offensive line), Penn State had an encouraging Week 2 performance that allowed some key players to get some extra rest before the Nittany Lions head south for a matchup at Auburn. He pinned Ohio deep inside their own two-yard line in the second quarter, which led to the Penn State defense coming up with a safety. Well, Penn State doesn’t need a punter because they may have one of the best in the Big Ten in Already having a hard-fought victory on the road in Week 1 and getting some experience and positive results from some fresh faces in Week 2, Penn State has the look of a team that should have a solid chance of coming back from Auburn with a win in Week 3. Ohio penetrated the line of scrimmage a bit too often to make Penn State feel too comfortable about the overall performance. [exhilarating road win at Purdue](https://nittanylionswire.usatoday.com/2022/09/02/instant-reaction-sean-clifford-delivers-thrilling-win-at-purdue/), Penn State got a chance to provide a different set of thrills for the fans in its home opener in Beaver Stadium on Saturday. Stop me if you have heard this before, but the Penn State offensive line needs to show some improvement. Allen had 23 rushing yards and 22 receiving yards on a screen to factor into the Penn State offense’s success. [Nick Singleton](https://nittanylionswire.usatoday.com/tag/nick-singleton/) had the look of being the top running back on the roster moving forward. But you can only go into the bag of tricks so many times against a defense like Penn State’s. Ohio never had any consistent threats and needed to dig into the bag of tricks to get on the scoreboard before halftime. Coming into this game, it looked as though Ohio would have a chance to have some similar results as Purdue did with the passing game in Week 1.

True freshman running back Nick Singleton exploded on the scene for the Nittany Lions with a number of explosive runs and a flurry of stiff arms throughout. Singleton finished the game with 10 carries for 179 yards and two touchdowns. Every bit of Allar’s play displayed poise, even when delivering a deep pass that resulted in a roughing the passer call. He was pulled with 11:33 left in the third quarter to get freshman quarterback Drew Allar some repetitions. Sean Clifford went 19-for-27 (70%) on passes for 213 yards and a touchdown with no interceptions. What didn’t show up in the stat line will show up in the tape.

Week 2 Game Recap: Penn State 46, Ohio 10 (Black Shoe Diaries)

Drew Allar, Nick Singleton shine in Nittany Lions home opener against an overmatched Ohio team.

On the next drive, it was Singleton exploding again, going down the sideline for a 44-yard touchdown. A play later, Clifford hit Mitchell Tinsley in a tight window on a slant and it was 26-7. Thanks to a brilliant Barney Amor punt, Penn State picked up a safety and went up 16-0 after Ohio fumbled in the end zone but was able to fall on it. Down 19-0, Ohio went deep in the bag of tricks to get on the board and make fans a little restless. Clifford capped the drive with a scramble to the goal line and then a second-straight week of being shoved into the end zone by Brenton Strange. The first quarter went exactly as planned for Penn State.

The Penn State-Ohio Report Card (Sports Illustrated)

And consider subscribing (button's on the home page) for more great content across the SI.com network. Still, the Lions ran the ball better then they have since 2019 and rolled out a bunch of talented freshmen. Franklin wasn't a fan of the second quarter, or the five sacks allowed, and the Lions weren't great on third down (3 of 12). Publisher Mark Wogenrich has covered Penn State for more than 20 years, tracking three coaching staffs, three Big Ten titles and a catalog of great stories. The Lions played a ton of guys (a school-record 17 caught passes), got Drew Allar some major run and rolled up 572 yards of offense. Meanwhile, Yurcich's group has scored 81 points in two games, his best stretch at Penn State and reminiscent of some of his offenses at Oklahoma State and Texas. That led to a safety. A lot of Saturday's home opener was fun to watch. Meanwhile, Clifford (19-for-27) broke the 70-percent completion rate for the seventh time in his career and improved to 10-0 in August/September games as a starter. Penn State's aggressive blitzes didn't quite hit home against a quarterback with a slower release than the defense saw at Purdue last week. So let's get to the report card. So the only thing that matters to me is winning football games, and I know how important it is to give those guys reps.

Drew Allar quietly, confidently shows he's the future of Penn State ... (Centre Daily Times)

Penn State freshman quarterback Drew Allar threw the first 2 touchdown passes of his career in Penn State's 46-10 win over the Ohio Bobcats Saturday ...

The senior quarterback admitted he wanted to play as much as possible in his final year, but is happy to help push the program further along. The pride from his teammates seemed sincere. His play was part of the plan for the Nittany Lions, with head coach James Franklin saying he wanted Allar to get in during the second and third quarter but ultimately waiting until the latter. But there isn’t much else to glean from what his teammates said postgame. Parker Washington said he’s proud of both quarterbacks and was grateful he was capable of catching at least one pass from each in the game. He may not be speaking much, but the crowd spoke for him in those moments. Doesn’t have an angry bone in his body but he does show up when you need him to show up.” Sometimes there isn’t much need for Allar to make his own voice heard. Drew Allar walked toward the Penn State student section to sing the alma mater with his helmet on. Only time you’ll hear Drew yell is when you hear him make the checks and do all that stuff. For just a moment, the grin poked out as he removed his helmet to sway alongside his teammates and sing. The freshman quarterback’s eyes peeked out from behind his facemask with his chinstrap covering the smile underneath.

Penn State's Nick Singleton, Drew Allar dilemma: How much should ... (York Daily Record/Sunday News)

Nick Singleton and Drew Allar look the part of future Penn State stars. How much should they lead the way now?

"The fact that people will have to respect him in the zone-read game (is important). They are proving to not only be the future but the present for Penn State, a little more each week. Could he have completed 19-of-27 passes for 213 yards without an interception as a starter against Ohio? "I’ve been fans of these guys since they stepped on campus," Brown said. He’s getting better and better and better ..." "For a young kid, the game seems slow to him already. I think it also helps that he’s 6-foot 5 and 242 pounds because he’s bigger than half the guys chasing him. The thing now for James Franklin and staff is managing this unique dynamic to best help the team. That's why he gave Allar prominent third-quarter time against Ohio − more important backup work than he's given any of his QBs at Penn State. Singleton nearly broke his first college carry for a length-of-the-field touchdown. That's why he went with Allar over more experienced Christian Veilleux in a pinch against Purdue. “Get prepared to start running.

Penn State football: Ranking the true freshmen for impact over the ... (Saturday Tradition)

The Nittany Lions' true freshman class runs deeper than Nicholas Singleton and Drew Allar. Youth is being served in State College.

The more this year’s true freshmen flash on SportsCenter, the more the next batch will want to join the fun. Curtis Jacobs (LB), Tyler Elsdon (LB), Chop Robinson (DE) and Kalen King (CB) lead the latter. The 6-5, 254-pounder is touted for twitchy athleticism along the lines of Carter, so he might earn more time as the season goes on. The speedy 4-star Saunders made his first 2 catches as a Lion on Saturday, netting 21 yards. In carries and yards (14-54), the 5-11, 211-pound Allen already ranks second in the 4-back rotation on the season, ahead of the veteran Lee and occasional third-down back Devyn Ford. Bottled up on 10 carries against Purdue, Singleton made the most of his second 10 carries on Saturday. Penn State coach James Franklin said in the preseason that he had a bunch of game-ready players in the 2022 recruiting class. That has proven true through 2 weeks, and several of the teenagers are growing up in a hurry. On his second TD throw, the 6-5, 242-pound 18-year-old stepped forward through attempted arm-tackles around his ankles and delivered a 28-yard strike to Khalil Dinkins. Franklin said prior to the Ohio game that he wanted the 6-3, 235-pound 4-star recruit to be involved. The 6-0, 179-pounder saw action against Purdue, as well. to the point he can go 80 at any time, that has an effect on [an opposing] defensive coordinator,” Franklin said in a postgame interview.
