24 game at Auburn – and that the Tigers would need to win at least one of them to keep the season moving in a position direction. That won’t fly against the Wildcats. The Tigers blew out Louisiana Tech 52-24 in last week’s opener, and many good things happened.

After forcing a Kansas State punt, MU grabbed the ball and inched toward midfield. [What are the implications for Mizzou football? Brady Cook will have his chance to get the game started for Missouri. Vaughn's one-yard touchdown put Kansas State up 7-3 on Missouri. The officials have noted there is lightning in the area. The Tigers could only muster a drive to midfield that went into KSU territory. The Wildcats got to the MU 17-yardline but stalled. His next pass was an interception that gave Kansas State the ball in MU territory. The Wildcats responded with a missed field goal. That put the Tigers' defense on an island. The defense is doing everything it can to keep the game within reach. That seals the game.

The Wildcats pick off four passes, control the line of scrimmage in Saturday's 40-12 throttling, sending the Tigers home searching for solutions.

“There's going to be a lot of negative thoughts and opinions out there about it. Obviously, the crowd played a big factor.” On the other side of the ball, the Wildcat running game eventually took charge, gashing the Tigers for 235 yards and four touchdowns. The Wildcats led 20-3, a lead that felt far more commanding than 17 points as the carnage continued along the line of scrimmage, leaving the Tigers wondering how they can regroup with so much season left. Seconds after resuming the game, K-State punt returner Phillip Brooks slipped through Jaylon Carlies’ whiff of a tackle and sprinted 76 yards for the touchdown. Cook completed 15 of 27 passes for 128 yards and two interceptions, an underthrown ball for Dominic Lovett then an inexplicable throw right to linebacker Daniel Green over the middle. “There were some plays early that I thought we missed that could have been changed the tide, but we didn't get it done.” On his watch, the Tigers had recruited and developed more depth on the offensive and defensive lines. Four interceptions by Mizzou’s quarterbacks spoiled a few promising stretches from the defense, but this game was lost at the point of attack. K-State finished the day with 10 tackles behind the line of scrimmage. He expected his 2022 Tigers to reflect that progress in the trenches. — Just a month ago as the Missouri football team settled into preseason camp, Tigers coach Eli Drinkwitz believed his team was closer to being equipped along the line of scrimmage to compete in the Southeastern Conference.

Five takeaways from Mizzou Football's 40-12 loss at Kansas State (Rock M Nation)

Missouri has a quarterback problem (again), and Eli Drinkwitz is left searching for answers.

The last time the Tigers were that bad against a non-conference opponent on a per-play basis was when Mizzou lost to Michigan State 55-7 in 2001. Missouri’s offense repaid the defense in that stretch with three points and a total of three drives that lasted more than three plays. He was his usual consistent self, even in the middle of the rain. This game had the potential to be a statement game for the Tigers. I’m not going to oversell the defensive performance. [#Mizzou]'s defense has held up remarkably well since the opening drive for a unit that keeps taking the field on the wrong side of the 50. K-State makes a 36-yard field goal to take a 26-6 lead with 35 seconds left in the 4th. If you eliminate that strange end-of-half situation at the end of the first half, they finished with three first downs as a result of passing completions. Missouri finished with 128 passing yards for the day. That all took place in the first 20 minutes of the game. Drinkwitz has said - repeatedly - that he knows he needs to open up the playbook. They needed to add more top-end talent to compete with the big boys.

The final margin was closer thanks to a later Mizzou score. That extended the margin to 20-3 and Missouri could never recover. They held the Wildcats potent rushing offense to just 89 yards and 14 points in the first half. K-State, on the other hand, racked up a respectable 336 yards on the day and dominated the ground game with 235 rushing yards. The Missouri Tigers entered Saturday riding high and had lofty expectations of a 2-0 start. The Wildcats having more rushing yards than Mizzou's total yards is not a recipe for success.
