The Kansas State Wildcats' homestand continues as they prepare to take on the Missouri Tigers at noon ET Sept. 10 at Bill Snyder Family Stadium.
The contest was all but wrapped up at the end of the third, by which point the Tigers had established a 38-10 advantage. That touchdown -- a 75-yard rush in the first quarter -- was one of the highlights of the game. The Wildcats got themselves on the board against the South Dakota Coyotes last week, but South Dakota never followed suit.
The Wildcats pick off four passes, control the line of scrimmage in Saturday's 40-12 throttling, sending the Tigers home searching for solutions.
“There's going to be a lot of negative thoughts and opinions out there about it. Obviously, the crowd played a big factor.” On the other side of the ball, the Wildcat running game eventually took charge, gashing the Tigers for 235 yards and four touchdowns. The Wildcats led 20-3, a lead that felt far more commanding than 17 points as the carnage continued along the line of scrimmage, leaving the Tigers wondering how they can regroup with so much season left. Seconds after resuming the game, K-State punt returner Phillip Brooks slipped through Jaylon Carlies’ whiff of a tackle and sprinted 76 yards for the touchdown. Cook completed 15 of 27 passes for 128 yards and two interceptions, an underthrown ball for Dominic Lovett then an inexplicable throw right to linebacker Daniel Green over the middle. “There were some plays early that I thought we missed that could have been changed the tide, but we didn't get it done.” On his watch, the Tigers had recruited and developed more depth on the offensive and defensive lines. Four interceptions by Mizzou’s quarterbacks spoiled a few promising stretches from the defense, but this game was lost at the point of attack. K-State finished the day with 10 tackles behind the line of scrimmage. He expected his 2022 Tigers to reflect that progress in the trenches. — Just a month ago as the Missouri football team settled into preseason camp, Tigers coach Eli Drinkwitz believed his team was closer to being equipped along the line of scrimmage to compete in the Southeastern Conference.
Missouri has a quarterback problem (again), and Eli Drinkwitz is left searching for answers.
The last time the Tigers were that bad against a non-conference opponent on a per-play basis was when Mizzou lost to Michigan State 55-7 in 2001. Missouri’s offense repaid the defense in that stretch with three points and a total of three drives that lasted more than three plays. He was his usual consistent self, even in the middle of the rain. This game had the potential to be a statement game for the Tigers. I’m not going to oversell the defensive performance. [#Mizzou]'s defense has held up remarkably well since the opening drive for a unit that keeps taking the field on the wrong side of the 50. K-State makes a 36-yard field goal to take a 26-6 lead with 35 seconds left in the 4th. If you eliminate that strange end-of-half situation at the end of the first half, they finished with three first downs as a result of passing completions. Missouri finished with 128 passing yards for the day. That all took place in the first 20 minutes of the game. Drinkwitz has said - repeatedly - that he knows he needs to open up the playbook. They needed to add more top-end talent to compete with the big boys.

On the positive side, K-State did an excellent job before Anthony Frias lost a fumble late in the fourth quarter. The Wildcats struggled to keep Missouri defenders away from him the rest of the day. They turned up the heat in the fourth quarter for two more touchdowns in garbage time, but that might not have been so easy to do in a closer game. But much of his production came on a single drive in the fourth quarter. K-State held Missouri to 222 yards and didn’t allow the Tigers to reach the end zone until the final play. Brooks torched Missouri on a punt return in the second half when he raced up the left sideline for a 75-yard touchdown. The best one of the afternoon came from Kobe Savage, who has already proven to be a significant junior-college addition. Martinez also finished with 52 yards on the ground. Joe Klanderman’s unit made things difficult on the visiting team all day long. For that reason, he said he circled this game on the schedule. The label of Special Teams U isn’t leaving K-State anytime soon. He hasn’t seen many opportunities as a return man since he notched a pair of touchdown returns against Kansas as a junior.

But don’t spread it around the locker room, don’t listen to the outside noise.” “Obviously the game came down to the third quarter,” Drinkwitz said. He finished the game 15 of 27 for 128 yards with two interceptions. The tape may tell a different story. The series before it was perhaps even uglier. “There were some plays early that I thought we missed that could have changed the tide, but we didn’t get it done.” It’s a common problem for the Tigers on the road. Nathaniel Peat carried the ball 13 times for 10 yards. Down 17 points Saturday and looking feckless in its first drive of the third quarter, Missouri’s defense managed a three-and-out against a bullish Kansas State offense.
