It wasn't a pretty win, but it was a win. And a win against in-state rival Iowa at Kinnick Stadium.

There’s also something to be said about the coaching on Iowa State’s touchdown drive. It’s understandable given his level of talent — and the three touchdowns against Southeast Missouri — but other players turned out to be more reliable options when Iowa State needed a big pass play. That’s when time matters most, and Iowa State’s coaches made all the right decisions. Iowa State’s coaching staff gets a grade boost because of the choices they made when it mattered most. It was exactly what the Cyclones needed at that moment, and the true freshman could not have performed better in front of a loud Hawkeyes crowd. And the Hawkeyes needed that free yardage to do much on offense. Iowa State’s offensive line — for the most part — gave Dekkers plenty of time to do what he needed to do. The Cyclones had fewer total tackles (42) than Iowa, but the same number of tackles for loss (4) and yards lost (15). But against the Hawkeyes, the Cyclones' defense did everything it needed to. Baylor won’t be an easy matchup, and the Iowa State that beat Iowa on Saturday could struggle against its Big 12 opponents. And the Dekkers-to-Xavier Hutchinson connection that was so successful against SEMO struggled to get going early. The entire performance wasn’t pretty, but the Cyclones showed glimpses of success between mistakes and missteps.

A Petras scramble two plays later got Iowa an elusive first down. With a commanding lead of one touchdown, Iowa went three-and-out on its next drive.
