You need to watch the most underrated sci-fi disaster movie of the ... (Inverse)

Released in early 2022 to a lackluster box office and even worse reviews, 'Moonfall' is finally streaming on HBO Max.

Moonfall made just under $60 million in ticket sales on a budget of roughly $140 million (making it the most expensive independent movie ever made). But now that Moonfall is streaming for the first time, there’s a chance this misunderstood sci-fi movie could finally find the audience it deserves. As a result, the director declined to send his movie straight to streaming, instead releasing it in theaters in the hopes that he’d make his money back (and then some) at the box office. After the success of [Independence Day](https://www.inverse.com/science/independence-day-real-science), Emmerich found his apparent sweet spot and continued to chip away at it with [The Day After Tomorrow](https://www.inverse.com/science/day-after-tomorrow-climate-change-ice-age-real-science-explained), [2012](https://www.inverse.com/article/17370-here-is-every-iconic-landmark-roland-emmerich-has-destroyed-in-his-films), and more. Still, that’s probably not enough to get a sequel, at least on the director’s own terms. The final act of Moonfall is so absurd that you can’t help but love it while also wondering how the hell Roland Emmerich ever came up with this story. Somehow, the story behind Moonfall is even more incredible. [Roland Emmerich](https://www.inverse.com/entertainment/moonfall-review-roland-emmerich) might be one of the most polarizing directors in Hollywood history. [The Hollywood Reporter](https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/movies/movie-features/roland-emmerich-interview-moonfall-1235080389/) when asked if he plans to explain Moonfall’s cliffhanger ending. Unlike 2012 and The Day After Tomorrow, Moonfall swerves hard into science fiction, mixing the spectacle of those films with the basic framework of Independence Day. The premise of Moonfall is delightfully simple. But when the Moon starts to crash down to Earth, they’re forced to reunite to save the world with the help of Hollow Moon conspiracy theorist K.C.

Stream It Or Skip It: 'Moonfall' on HBO Max, a Sci-fi Disaster Epic ... (Decider)

With Moonfall (now on HBO Max), director Roland Emmerich returns to what he knows all too well: dumbass cliche-ridden disaster spectacles. After 2012, The Day ...

We shouldn’t be underwhelmed by the end of the world, but leave it to Emmerich to find a way. Our Take: I know you’re going to ask, so I figure I’ll just head you off at the pass: John Cusack outrunning a fissure with a limousine in 2012 is as dumb as people outdriving meteoric destruction in Moonfall, but neither is as dumb as Jake Gyllenhaal outrunning the deadly frost in The Day After Tomorrow. Will whatever’s left of humanity be saved, specifically the family members of the principal characters, and does all this have something to do with the origins of everything? [2012](https://decider.com/movie/2012-2009/), [The Day After Tomorrow](https://decider.com/movie/the-day-after-tomorrow/) two [Independence Day](https://decider.com/movie/independence-day-1996/)s and the execrable 1997 [Godzilla](https://decider.com/movie/godzilla-1998/), he gives us this doozy, in which Halle Berry and Patrick Wilson bear down and try to stop the moon from crashing into Earth. Fowler is a higher-up at NASA now, but Harper is divorced as all hell and ripping NOTICE TO VACATE signs off his door, NOTICE TO VACATE signs that might go away if he sold the badass vintage muscle car he always tinkers with. The Gist: Once upon a time, in 2011, a year before 2012 and in a different timeline than 2012, a Space Shuttle mission manned by Jocinda Fowler (Berry) and Brian Harper (Wilson) went kerflooey.
