Quarterback Lamar Jackson and the Baltimore Ravens could not agree to terms on a contract extension ahead of the 2022 season, the team announced Friday ...

We will continue to work towards a long-term contract after the season, but for now we are looking forward to a successful 2022 campaign." The franchise tag would prevent that from happening, but this remains a peculiar, fascinating situation that evidently isn't headed toward a resolution soon. Or are we headed toward the unthinkable -- Jackson reaching free agency -- in 2023? Baltimore, meanwhile, is taking a chance by not securing the 2019 AP NFL Most Valuable Player and allowing him to get uncomfortably close to free agency. Ultimately, though, it comes down to how much the Ravens value Jackson. Instead of coming to a triumphant agreement by the Friday deadline

Lamar Jackson Could Be Incredibly Right or Incredibly Wrong on ... (Sports Illustrated)

Lamar Jackson's desire to negotiate his contract extension is noble, but it could also cost him millions if he suffers a significant injury.

The Ravens could end up succeeding in a kind of cold, Patriots-esque manner, ultimately praised for their ability to look past the electricity and the awards to see what we all collectively fear for Jackson. It’s important for us to remember that this is what they’re paid to do, as unsatisfying as that feels from the outside looking in. The Ravens see assets, some of which increase in value and some of which decline in value over time. We see it every Sunday, numb to the macabre Fox jingle that plays during a medical timeout, but aware of its disturbing frequency. We see Jackson on the field and feel a steady current of electricity. All we can do is wish him luck. Our brains are wired to crave absolutes, familiarity and sensibility, so when someone decides to eschew those creature comforts, it sets off all manner of alarm bells. We see a team hanging on the edge of Jackson’s cape trying to keep up with his superhuman brain and body. They see Jackson the way we see Jackson on the field, but they also see the effects of the repeated collisions. Most of us would have just taken the money. He kept going from place to place, insisting to everyone that he was a quarterback until someone treated him as such. [Friday’s statement from general manager Eric DeCosta](https://www.si.com/nfl/2022/09/09/lamar-jackson-ravens-fail-to-reach-long-term-deal-before-2022-season) simply confirmed as much.

What's next for Lamar Jackson of Baltimore Ravens after contract ... (ESPN)

Will the Ravens end up using the franchise tag? Is a trade possible at some point? Taking a look at the biggest questions surrounding Jackson.

Huntley, 24, is a restricted free agent next offseason, so the Ravens have to make a decision on him, as well. [a Jackson tweet](https://twitter.com/Lj_era8/status/1564353473772244992?s=20&t=vLMe5x2nXnDeYf918Uoz-A), the Ravens haven't offered him $250 million guaranteed. This offseason, the Broncos traded two first-round picks and two second-rounders to the Seahawks to acquire 33-year-old Russell Wilson. Prescott eventually signed a long-term extension with the Cowboys while Cousins hit free agency and signed a landmark deal with the [Minnesota Vikings](/nfl/team/_/name/min/minnesota-vikings). The Ravens would only consider dealing Jackson if they felt there was zero chance of finalizing a long-term deal. After Flacco led the Ravens to a Super Bowl win, the team signed him to a record-setting deal 25 days later (and three days before the tag deadline). And the Cowboys still gave him a four-year, $160 million contract the next offseason. The biggest concern is Jackson's style of play, which includes breaking long runs and eluding pass-rushers. Jackson is guaranteed $23.016 million this season under his fifth-year option. March 7 is the deadline for teams to use the franchise tag. When Jackson fires a game-winning touchdown pass, the reaction will include how he increased his value and how the Ravens dropped the ball by not getting an extension done. It has happened in 17 of the last 19 seasons, including last year when the

Ravens QB enters 2022 season without long-term deal after contract talks come to end.

Balancing the past with the future is the major factor when paying a quarterback. We will continue to work towards a long-term contract after the season, but for now, we are looking forward to a successful 2022 campaign.” If the Ravens can’t meet his demands, someone else will gladly find a few Brinks trucks to make him happy. A long-term deal with Jackson is expected to break records, either in guaranteed money or yearly salary. The odd part about the negotiations is Jackson’s lack of an agent. The Louisville alum desires to focus on the season, tabling any contract talks to after the end of the year.

Ravens, Lamar Jackson fail to reach contract extension: QB to play ... (CBSSports.com)

Speaking about the contract situation later Friday afternoon, Ravens head coach John Harbaugh ensured Jackson will still be with the Ravens past this season.

Jackson is the fastest quarterback in league history to reach 5,000 passing yards and 2,000 rushing yards (35 games), and his 10 100-yard rushing games are tied with Michael Vick for the most in league history. His five games with 200 passing yards and 100 rushing yards are the most in league history. He has completed 64.2% of his passes for 9,880 yards with 83 touchdowns to 31 interceptions (98.0 rating) since becoming the Ravens' starter -- all while rushing for 3,564 yards and 20 touchdowns. Jackson is also the first quarterback in Baltimore is 37-12 in Jackson's starts since Jackson became the starting quarterback in Week 11 of the 2018 season. Just because the two sides failed to reach an extension, doesn't mean talk between the Ravens and Jackson are extinguished.

“I said at the beginning that it will happen when it’s time, and when it’s time, it will happen. At times in 2021, he looked like the player who was the league's MVP two years earlier. He and the team have avoided any real public acrimony through this process. Without an agreement on an extension, former NFL MVP Lamar Jackson is set to play this season on the final year of his current contract.

A person familiar with the situation expressed the view this week that it would take a dramatic last-minute shift in the negotiations for Jackson and the Ravens to reach an agreement this week. They need a bounce-back season from Jackson, who was plagued by injuries and was limited to 12 games last season. Ravens Coach John Harbaugh said he hasn’t been directly involved in the negotiations. Jackson is handling the negotiations himself with help from his mother and input from the NFL Players Association. [at a news conference](https://twitter.com/Ravens/status/1568284751252914181) Friday at the Ravens’ training facility in Owings Mills, Md. There had been skepticism all week about the prospects for the two sides to strike a deal this week. We will continue to work towards a long-term contract after the season, but for now we are looking forward to a successful 2022 campaign.” Jackson had suggested that he would cut off negotiations by the season opener. But the Ravens would have the right to retain him by matching any offer, and the right to receive two first-round draft choices as compensation from Jackson’s next team if they allow him to leave. It would allow Jackson to negotiate with other teams and potentially sign an offer sheet with another franchise. “We greatly appreciate how he has handled this process and we are excited about our team with Lamar leading the way.

The concept of putting big guaranteed money in NFL contracts is a fairly recent phenomenon, and negotiating quarterback contracts are exacerbated by deals like Deshaun Watson’s and Russell Wilson’s, which will give the player $230M and $124M guaranteed, respectively. The Baltimore Ravens and quarterback Lamar Jackson failed to agree on a long-term extension before Friday's deadline.

It appears as if the quarterback and the team are fully focused on football, with many fully expecting a bounce-back season from a team that was hit extremely hard with injuries in 2021. On Friday, Baltimore released a statement from general manager Eric DeCosta about the situation, saying that the team and Jackson weren’t able to agree on a long-term contract despite the best effort on both sides. The Baltimore Ravens have seen plenty of storylines develop over their 2022 season for the entirety of the offseason.

The Ravens and franchise quarterback Lamar Jackson have failed to reach an agreement on a new contract, the team announced Friday.

If the sides are unable to reach a new deal by March 7, Baltimore would have to place the franchise tag on Jackson to keep him from becoming a free agent. On Wednesday, he indicated that Friday would be the cutoff. "Despite best efforts on both sides, we were unable to reach a contract extension with Lamar Jackson," Ravens general manager Eric DeCosta said in a statement.

Deshaun Watson contract likely derailed Lamar Jackson talks (NBC Sports)

It's generally believed that Jackson wanted a fully-guaranteed contract, primarily since Watson got one. It's not an unreasonable position for Jackson to take.

Because Jackson has not said much to anyone about the process, it’s fair to wonder where and from whom he has received his advice. Here’s hoping he did it with a full understanding and appreciation of the ramifications of passing on Door No. Given the deals they’ve done in recent years with key players, it’s fair to assume that the Ravens put together a package that, while not fully-guaranteed, became a strong alternative to [Kyler Murray](https://www.nbcsportsedge.com/football/nfl/player/49841/kyler-murray) and [Russell Wilson](https://www.nbcsportsedge.com/football/nfl/player/11668/russell-wilson) deals) suggest that the Watson contract was an aberration. Unless Jackson is planning a power play, such as demanding a trade after the 2022 season, the choice came down to Door No. What if the NFLPA, in any advice it gave to Jackson, was trying to advance that agenda in lieu of considering the actual best interests of Jackson? Off-field issues notwithstanding, he: (1) forced a trade from Houston; (2) managed to get four teams to the table in an effort to land his services; (3) eliminated the Browns from consideration after they’d burned the bridge with [Baker Mayfield](https://www.nbcsportsedge.com/football/nfl/player/1873/baker-mayfield); and (4) witnessed a desperate Browns franchise make Watson an offer he couldn’t refuse, in the form of a fully-guaranteed deal. It’s another reason why Jackson needs an agent who would have explained the situation to him. Jackson, unless he jostles to be traded after the 2023 season, won’t be able to create the same kind of rush for his services. It’s fairly clear that the Watson contract played a huge role in keeping the Ravens and Jackson from getting something done. Jackson, given his playing style, may not be the same player after three more years of regularly running the ball and taking hits. Jackson has been a model citizen for the Ravens away from the field.

Don’t worry about Lamar Jackson’s contract, because this is the year of Jackson and the Ravens, and he will be rewarded accordingly on the back end like those before him. With that said, if you are a fan of the Ravens — or just a fan of football — get ready. As always, the team’s special teams unit is expected to be strong, and the Ravens are focused on the New York Jets in Week 1. The Ravens also brought Dedeaux to multiple practices at the beginning and end of training camp to help Jackson and the team in tandem. There is no lacking in preparation between the Ravens or from the Jackson parties and fans should be excited about that. This is a good situation, there is no need to buy into the hype the national media has created. Another Ravens quarterback, one who is already an MVP being doubted and in need of a contract. They still succeeded and eventually reset to be successful in the long-term future. A lot of people are asking why did he not sign a contract and I am here to tell you that maybe it’s for the best. Lamar Jackson, a former NFL MVP at the age of 22, the leader of the Baltimore Ravens, and the man with a very strong 37-12 (.755%) record. And this is the point we will start with.
