The Barbarian Q&A event revealed behind the scenes details from directors Zach Cregger and stars Georgina Campbell, Justin Long, and Matthew Davis.
The result is a deep dive behind-the-scenes of Barbarian that reveals how the movie came to be, what references Cregger used, and how Campbell, Long, and Davis identify with their characters. At the end of August, Collider held an advanced screening for Barbarian in Los Angeles, with a handful of lucky readers getting tickets to watch the movie and participate in a Q&A session with Cregger, Campbell, Long, and Davis. When we travel, all we want to do is find a cozy home to relax and take care of our business.
“Barbarian” marks the auspicious feature film debut of director-writer Zach Cregger, someone well-versed in film tropes and with a subtle skill at social satire ...
As good as the casting is, it is the house that is the real star, nicely appointed but cookie-cutter, in a sea of torn up and decayed homes. It has an alarming basement with a horrific room that has a soiled bed, a bucket and a camera. “Barbarian” starts at night with a heavy downpour and a thunderclap. All along are reaches for real social issues — redlining, misogyny, character redemption, gun accidents and police misconduct, among them — that elevate the film from genre-gazing silliness. Their little awkward dance — checking booking receipts, offering to sleep on the couch — seems to point to a tiny tale of gender roles and microagressions. Make no mistake: Cregger is playing with us every step of the way.
The fall's first buzzy horror film is a thriller with many secrets about what happens when a woman named Tess (Georgina Campbell) is forced to stay the ...
As the film sinks deeper into the house it begins in, its best trick is one of the oldest in cinema. This is where Barbarian begins: as a suspenseful tale about two strangers forced to ride out a storm together, told from the perspective of a woman who must constantly worry whether the man she’s sharing a house with is dangerous. Especially when presented with the familiar iconography it hides, from a seemingly endless dark tunnel to a rooms that looks like something horrible happened there. Stuck in a storm with no other options readily available and an important job interview in the morning, Tess makes the risky decision to stay the night. With a little grace and imagination, the house doesn’t even look that bad — but why would anyone watching a horror film be that gracious? And part of that is something for viewers to be scared of beyond its initial ominous portrait of the quiet terror that can lurk inside a house when two strangers are forced together on a dark and stormy night.
Title: Barbarian Describe This Movie In One The Departed Quote: COLIN SULLIVAN: Watch what happens! Brief Plot Synopsis: Don't go in there.
One thing he keeps in mind to present day is that "Peter Pan is a story about youthfulness and growing up, what we lose when growing up and what we should keep. The parents [who first appear wearing masks] show an element of loss and coldness to the children to share what that experience might be like," Walsh says. Keep reading for our list of the coming week’s best offerings. But, of course, Peter Pan is more than just the story of the boy who could fly, lived on the island of Neverland where he has constant adventures and would never have to worry about mortgage payments. He has no sense of what it is to be nice to anybody," Walsh says. So yes: "the less you know going in, the better" is applicable to Barbarian for a variety of reasons. To be honest, the unpleasant mundanity of the reveal and necessary suspension of disbelief — both at the main character's actions and the climax — torpedo many of the good feelings that might have been engendered in the first act. Now he'll be dancing as the Father and Captain Hook in Peter Lack of nearby hotels aside, it's hard to believe that many women would agree to spend the night alone in a house with a complete stranger. The Airbnb in question is somehow the only intact house in what looks like a bombed-out neighborhood. "Critical" Analysis: It's difficult to review a movie that really rewards the audience for not seeking anything out about it. With no other options — and against her better judgment — she agrees to share the house with him.
The third feature from writer-director Zach Cregger brings viewers into an Airbnb horror story that sees a young woman named Tess (Georgina Campbell) find ...
"Barbarian" isn't the first Airbnb-based horror movie to exist, and there's a good chance that it won't be the last, either. Frankly, there isn't much need for the Mother to be restricted to the nighttime since, just from looking at the state of the neighborhood, there's no one coming around during the day, but it's an interesting element to the creature that makes her even scarier. At the moment, there are no announced plans for a sequel to "Barbarian," and the film wraps things up on a definitive note with the Mother being killed and Tess walking out alive. With the gun already being too far from him, it's likely that the Mother moved it away from him in order to keep taking care of him and his last act is him simply seeking freedom from this hell. From the Mother's perspective, AJ pushes her baby off at that moment, so it only makes sense that she would get up in a fury and crush AJ's skull in an absolutely gruesome fashion. Where Tess drank the baby bottle of milk and tried to act as the Mother's child, AJ constantly rejected her, and pushing Tess off the roof was the final straw. For instance, how did AJ and the realty company not know that Frank and the Mother have been there the whole time? But why would Frank just suddenly end things after everything that he's done and not just use the bell to bring the Mother into the room to help get rid of AJ? AJ might've thought that Frank was simply a frail old man at first glance, but once he sees some of Frank's sadistic behavior in one of the videos, it's a truth that's tough to handle for him. The Mother being Frank's caregiver certainly makes sense given the bell system in Frank's room, and her treatment of those that accept her motherly actions, like Tess, also fits into her vision of being a mother to her captives. Given the bedridden state of Frank and the breastfeeding tutorial video on loop, it's very likely that the Mother developed her motherly tendencies while taking care of Frank over the years. While her intentions and motivations to keep Tess and AJ (Justin Long) captive are clear as she wants to be their mother, her origins are a burning mystery throughout that are only solved when a local homeless man named Andre (Jaymes Butler) spills the beans.
The trailer posits a fairly simple setup: Tess (Georgina Campbell) shows up to an Airbnb and finds that the owner's rental company has also lent it to Keith ( ...
Rather than being terrified by learning of the murder room, AJ is thrilled to discover extra square footage he can add to a Redfin listing. Just as every way we were primed to suspect Keith as a murderous psycho (stranger in a house waiting for an attractive young woman) is undercut by his behavior (opening a bottle of wine in front of her so she can see he didn’t slip drugs into it). Writer/director Zach Cregger makes great use of the decrepitude of Detroit, a city slowly being reclaimed by the forest as residents scatter out to the exurbs or into the inner core: The home on Barbary Lane where Tess and Keith are staying is the only one not covered in graffiti, missing a roof, or crumbling to the ground. The first half hour of Barbarian is an effective, if typical, horror film, one that expertly ratchets up the dread and deftly drops in the occasional jump scare. Suffice to say he does not, and neither of them is well equipped for what is to come. As such, the top third of this review will discuss nothing beyond what is

The women in Barbarian suffer through a lot, and the lack of empathy, not listening or believing what they have to say is what continues to prop up men like AJ and Frank. There is a moment when Frank and AJ are face to face, and it's like the latter is seeing a part of himself in the former. No one came for the women before her, and a big part of controlling women in society is to ensure that they are not believed. Tess watches as the Mother murders Keith, but his body is nowhere to be found by the time AJ appears and starts looking around downstairs. Considering AJ had no idea there was an underground to begin with suggests the location was not a part of the Detroit house’s blueprints. The actor is sick to his stomach and views Frank as a monster. Frank could have discovered it when he moved in and made sure there was a secret doorway to keep people out. She was a result of his abuse and rape over the years and, though he had control over the women for so long, it's possible the Mother was finally able to have her revenge in some small way. The ending to Barbarian is unexpected, with the plot itself not following traditional avenues of storytelling to keep viewers guessing. Tess ultimately shoots the Mother and survives the terrifying ordeal. Barbarian’s ending sees Tess return to the Airbnb to save AJ, who has just watched Frank die by suicide. The horror film is one of the rare few that leaves all of its twists and major plot points out of its trailers.
One of the many striking elements of writer-director Zach Cregger's horror film “Barbarian” is its sense of place; the decaying Detroit neighborhood in ...
Although the majority of the film does take place in that creepy house and the neighborhood exteriors that Bakeva built, the filmmakers did take advantage of the “America Town” set for one striking flashback sequence that provides an explanation for the disorienting horrors of the film’s first half. “I hate it in movies where there’s a flashlight scene and somehow there’s other light in the space,” Kuperstein said. “In the script, the last scene took place on the roof of a church,” Kuperstein recalled, “but there was a silo there, and I just said, ‘Can we just forget the church and make this a silo scene?’ As soon as it came out of my mouth, I thought they were all going to think it was a stupid idea, but Zach said, ‘That’s great. Since it was too dangerous to put actors on top of the silo, the art department built a full-size replica of the roof on a stage and Kuperstein found an effective, lo-fi way of creating his exterior. Bulgarian production designer Rossitsa Bakeva created a street with facades placed to accommodate Kuperstein and Cregger’s pre-planned camera angles (the entire film was meticulously storyboarded), and Kuperstein took advantage of a preexisting element of the farm for the film’s climax. They brought a lot of experience, but also enthusiasm because they weren’t just cogs in the machine the way they might be on a bigger project.”

The entertaining “Barbarian” helps push the trend forward with a colorful and nasty romp reminiscent of “Don’t Breathe,” but with a hero that viewers can wholeheartedly embrace. Skarsgârd, who will be seen playing the title character in “The Crow” reboot, exudes boyish discomfort that is both off-putting and strangely inviting. And the bright, saturated colors of the flashback make a great contrast with the present-day storyline. In March, Ti West’s 1970s set, gory and perverse “X” began a good run, and we hit a horror high-watermark with “The Black Phone” in June. By setting his story in an urban environment that has completely been ignored, Cregger further comments on our immediate perception of anyone who might inhabit the run-down and disabused portions of a decaying American metropolis. But at some point, in the middle of the night, Tess discovers her bedroom door open and Keith experiencing a loud, fitful nightmare.

Lifshitz and their BoulderLight Pictures came aboard, in turn bringing in “The Ring” and “It” producer Roy Lee of Vertigo Entertainment. Over the course of a weekend, “Barbarian” suddenly fell apart. “It was kind of crazy.” By the time the “Barbarian” script was done, Cregger was determined to get it made. With only two days to film exteriors on location in Detroit, “Barbarian” production designer Rossitsa Bakeva and a largely Bulgarian crew built an entire residential neighborhood of 13 home facades from scratch. “I convinced myself that that door was closed for me, and it took me a long time to even start writing again,” he said. “I thought that was an interesting thing to explore with somebody like AJ who is so untethered, such a narcissist and depending on who he’s around, behaves differently. I think I knew it intellectually, but it was the first time that I really dwelled on it.” “Horror is a really great genre for up-and-coming actors — the genre is what’s selling. and in this industry, so unfortunately you cross paths with a lot of AJs,” said Long. Although known for his work in comedy, Cregger is a voracious student of horror movies and had always gravitated toward the dark. In theaters today, “Barbarian” is a raucous descent with multiple surprises best left unspoiled — but they do involve a creepy basement and monstrous secrets deep beneath the surface.
"I'm not sure I would put myself in the same positions, but I think it's exciting," the actress said of the year's wildest horror movie.
“Zach’s good friends with Jordan Peele, and I think he spoke to Jordan Peele a lot while he was writing the film, and Jordan Peele saw an early cut of it as well,” Campbell said. And in horror, you get the final girl dynamic a lot, but I think it’s interesting that this final girl has a lot of agency and also does try to save the men.” “I think horror always is a really good place to be able to get those messages across in a way that isn’t too overbearing.” It doesn’t beat you over the head with an agenda or a message, but it’s there if you want to lean into it,” she said. It had a very weird tone that, once I figured out that was the tone of it, I was just really into it.” “Lots of people are caught on my character and the decisions she makes,” Campbell said of early fan reactions to the movie.

The mastery of genre and the story at hand is really quite compelling. Just know that it’s a film eager to consistently surprise you. The bright side of this is that not only did Tess make it out, but The Mother is at peace and no longer trapped in a cruel environment. [Barbarian was a horror-filled fest](https://www.cinemablend.com/movies/barbarian-reviews-are-in-see-what-critics-are-saying-are-saying-about-the-horror-flick) that was an excellent add-on for the [2022 movie schedule ](https://www.cinemablend.com/news/2569630/2022-new-movie-release-dates-full-schedule-of-all-the-upcoming-movies)and something that horror fans all around will enjoy, from the incredible performances to the chilling storyline. It’s then that Tess shoots her in the head, and while Tess makes it out of this alive as the only survivor, a part of you can’t help but feel bad for the creature we just witnessed kill so many people. Obviously, to Tess, The Mother is terrifying, but she tries to tell The Mother that she can’t go back. However, the way that The Mother ends is almost saddening in a way. A big question that I’m sure many people have about the Barbarian ending is who really is the true villain of this movie? The Mother kills Andre and goes after them to the point where they run up a water tower. For a moment, it seems they find peace with Andre, but The Mother is still alive and hunts them down. The man that had been residing in the house before -- whose name is Frank -- was a serial rapist and abducted women, had children with his victims, and then had children with the children, and so on and so forth -- which resulted in the creation of The Mother. Tess, at first, takes the opportunity to flee when The Mother takes AJ and forces him to feed from her nipple. Frank’s neighbor at one point said that the neighborhood was “going to hell,” and it turns out, it really did with Frank living there. He’s acting particularly sketchy and of course, the audience is set to believe that he might end up being the killer.

However, when both Tess and The Mother survive their fall, AJ has his eyes promptly gouged out by The Mother, who in turn is shot by a bleeding Tess. Unlike AJ, who was only ever motivated by his own narcissism, Tess survives because she’s able to empathize with The Mother, which allows her to correctly respond to each of the increasingly strange situations she finds herself in throughout Barbarian. After accidentally shooting Tess in the stomach, AJ states that he is going to make sure she gets to the hospital. Equipped with Frank’s gun, AJ reunites with Tess and the pair make their escape from the house. Unfortunately for Tess, she’s exactly the kind of “baby” that The Mother has been searching for. We later learn that Frank used to trap the women he kidnapped in said tunnels, and he’d not only rape and torture them but also any of the children that were born afterward.
In addition to being a downright terrifying horror flick, 'Barbarian' shrewdly explores themes of abuse and trauma.
Both in a habit of harming women for their own pleasure, the old man’s death does not mark a victory so much as a representation of the fact that, no matter what, there will always be people out there who want to do harm to others. And the final girl usually lives to tell the tale. This is certainly an option, though given how long the abuse went on, chances are he feels no guilt and put the gun to his head simply because he was confronted by AJ and knows that he’ll probably get caught if AJ manages to escape. She is the product of violent, incessant abuse that made her crave having a child. With that, Barbarian cuts to credits, which are cheekily overlaid by The Ronettes’ song “Be My Baby.” But what happens to Tess after the credits roll? With the cage door left open, Tess finally has a chance to escape, so she does. When AJ sees that they are alive, he apologizes profusely to Tess – but it is too late. Locked in a cage under the AirBnB’s foundation, the only way for them to avoid being murdered is to allow the woman – we’ll call her The Mother – to treat them like babies. You try to call the host, but it goes straight to voicemail. She’s being held captive by a woman who has been imprisoned herself by a man for the past several decades and was driven insane as a result. 'Barbarian' will earn around $9 million over the weekend as 'Brahmāstra Part One - Shiva' aims for $4 million.
I’d also argue there’s a sharp difference between ‘all are welcome’ or Veggie Tales-style Christian flicks (that’s a compliment) like Heaven is For Real and The Shack and arguable persecution-complex and/or explicitly anti-choice films like October Baby. The Kirk Cameron-starring melodrama earned $855,000 on Friday for a likely $2.32 million opening weekend. That’s well below the over/under $10 million debuts of Baahubali 2: The Conclusion in 2017 and RRR this past March. The hope is that Barbarian, which has used the whole ‘don’t read just go’ hook as an implicit marketing tool, will leg out as audiences discover its various surprises (the marketing is almost entirely focused on the first act) and ghoulish pleasures. Ayan Mukerji’s ambitious but frankly formulaic and plot > character franchise-starter earned $2 million on Friday for a likely over/under $4 million weekend. Like Idris Elba’s Beast (which opened with $11 million a few weeks ago), this is the kind of old-school genre programmer that probably would have netted an easy $20 million back when more folks went to the movies just to go to the movies.

In 'Barbarian,' writer-director Zach Cregger messes with our expectations.
Yep, the same Airbnb Keith and Tess double-booked. I certainly enjoyed the jolting cuts from one storyline to the next. Her Airbnb has been double-booked and a confused and sleepy man answers the door. Keeping us viewers (and Tess) on our toes. In Barbarian, Georgina Campbell (“Broadchurch”) plays Tess and Bill Skarsgard (Pennywise in IT, 2017) is Keith, the settled Airbnb tenant. The only problem with our theory is that writer-director Zach Cregger has made it his mission to mess with our heads – and the genre – by confounding us at every turn.
